Heh, Angie, Great Minds Think Alike! (GMTA) I was thinking long in framing my face in front for a feminine look, while very short in the back for a nice masculine touch.

I took pains to wash and scrunch the hair after posting yesterday. It has some curl but it looks more like some wavy strands here and there. I just think it needs to go shorter.

Courage! (this is where being a prince or knight would help.....I guess channel my inner highwayman?)

I was also wondering about the effects of seasonal weather. I swear I had curly hair last summer. I do not right now. I could bring it out with styling but with more effort and not as nice results. But you did say it was "about a year ago" that the curls came in nicely, was it truly in the winter?
It's also very hormonal for me... I had straighter hair when I was pregnant/breastfeeding.

I was amazed at how much curlier my hair became after I got it cut. I have also been following the "conditioner wash" method fairly consistently for the last year or so, together with Lorraine Massey's scrunch/plop technique, and it seems to help.

I had a big bald patch develop on the side of my head while I was in the last stages of my PhD. DH noticed it while I was brushing my hair, but I have no idea how long it had actually been there. It was fairly easy to conceal but it freaked me out far more than my looming thesis defense did! Fortunately it started growing back after a few months but it was rather freaky.

I can sympathize completely. I just had my curls cut a bit shorter ( chin length) and really like it. Part of it is the amount of layering the stylist does. Too much and the curls don't curl well and just hang there, too little and it gets lumpy. If you can go to someone who specializes in curly hair, DO IT!

The shorter cuts would certainly be great on you, but I wonder if it's just a lack of humidity that is making your curls act despondent? If you can, wait until you're feeling emotionally strong before you make the decision to cut. Just my humble recommendation.

Glad you are feeling a bit better, Mochi! I loved JulieJohn's word "saucy" to describe how you might look in one of those shorter cuts, but I agree if you are going to cut it, best to go when you are feeling strong-- and yes, go to someone you KNOW is good with curly hair because it will make a world of difference. My stepdaughter has curls like yours and oh - the difference the RIGHT haircut makes in her case.

I think a shorter cut would be really pretty with your face and may also bring back the curls. DH's hair definitely straightens out way more when he gets lazy about cutting it.

If you do decide to proceed, I would go with the more costly curl expert, especially for the initial cut. You could also book just a consultation with him, taking the pictures, and just see what your impression is before booking a cut.

Well come visit me and I will take you to my wonderful haircutter Nili! I just had it cut again yesterday and she really does a wonderful job on curls. I think our hair has similar amount of curls, more or less, and the right cut makes the difference in bringing them out.

Hi. Back after a nice dinner out with friends. Thank you for all your kind, helpful and thoughtful responses. I feel much better. I am not even sure how much of the melancholy was about the hair, but that was playing a part. I am gravitating toward a shorter cut, but a bit on the fence still....I have a local woman who's pretty good with your basic haircut, and the guy who specializes in curls (who is more expensive, like twice as much). He's very good, and maybe just for the first time (taking a pic as a record) I could see him...?

The hair loss may be from my persistent anemia that I've had for years (treating with iron on and off). I've started (again) on iron and the hair loss in the shower seems to be starting to decrease.

I sympathize with you on the hair loss! I have also experienced it, and it's so hard to know what to do. I started using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner, which did help. I also have to remind myself not to mess with my hair/scalp or wear tight ponies. If I do either I notice a change in hair shedding right away. My hair loss is due to psoriasis, and I've clung to my longer hair so far. I only heat style twice a week now, which seems to have really helped, but I may eventually go to a shorter cut. I don't have great advice beyond that, but I just wanted you to know that you are not alone - hair loss among women is hard because we don't talk about it!

Mochi, I am behind whatever you decide, I just want to tell you what a sincere and intelligent girl you are. Sorry you feel blue. Your post was so sweet and heartfelt.

Remember, per Rae's experience and many others, a new do takes a bit of getting used to, the individual hairs kind of freak out and need to adjust to their new freedom. After the initial adjustment I think those styles Caro and Zap suggested would look very saucy on you.

And about the hair loss. I have had two episodes that were pretty bad. The last one was part of the side effects from Accutane. Ask me to show you the shorter patch of hair on my neck. It is freaky!
It can get scary but it does stop. I promise!

Sometimes is normal, sometimes is something called Telogen Effluvium
See here:
http://www.aocd.org/skin/derma.....uvium.html

The best thing to do is to relax, don't worry too much about it ( washing or not washing your hair is of very little help, according to my doctor, since the hairs just decide to dislodge from the scalp, what you see falling was going to fall anyway).

Mine stopped after a year or so. You can use Biotin and Omega 3 supplements. They are believed to help. The Nioxin shampoo is good too!

About loosing hair, hugs to you! Have you tried using Nioxin shampoo & conditioner, it works really well to stop hair fall.

Is it very cold where you live? I know where I am now it is terrible and no amount of product or cutting will make hair look any better... dry houses, dry and biting cold outside... Personally I am surviving with this product:
http://www.redken.com/products.....-anti-snap

One interesting auxiliary effect of going short would be that I'd feel compelled to wear (light) makeup as a daily ritual. And to do that, I'd be wanting to get my workouts in consistently early in the morning. Ideally, anyway.

I vote cut. I anticipate a stronger haircut would do wonders for you and your style revolution. I would go as short as Halle Berry but you can go longer and take off the hair from your pretty face.

Agr, the pics did not load. Hold on...

Adding Ms. Obama's hair. So gorgeous!

....and I do have an excellent hairdresser but he's in Queens NY. I trusted him to go from about my length now, to a very, very short length ( probably like MaryK's), without even bothering to bring a picture. I just told him to cut my hair short, based on why he though looked best. Everyone loved my cut.

We can schedule a consultation on February, if you'd like. Although it could be of little use for maintenance. Just throwing it out there.

Don't be sad.

I was so happy at around this time last year when I tamed the frizz and started getting these wonderful curls. And my hair, which I'd never been able to grow long (for me), was at a nice new length that felt and looked good, I thought.

I don't know what's going on, but I seem to be losing the curls. It could be that the hair is longer and weighing them down. My hair is lank and listless. It will curl up a bit after I shower and condition but the curls don't last much and don't seem as full. I wonder if it's also hormones. I go through textural changes in my hair every couple of years.

Anyway, I'm feeling sad about this....and worse, I am having hair come out in the shower, more than I am happy about. I had my thyroid checked out as normal and the doctor has been consulted. I feel much more leery of washing it because of this (not as bad as it sounds, because it's so dry anyway). But really. I don't like it.

So I am suddenly wondering if I should get it chopped short. Fairly short. Not a pixie. I don't know what. What would suit me. I wonder if I would regret it. I am worried about whether short hair would make my head look larger, or reveal some sort of shape that I won't like. Or make me look older or less cute. I don't know if the hair would grow back the same if I didn't like it.

Feeling disproportionately down about this (unless it's other things I can't even pinpoint). I'm just feeling a little blue--out of the blue. Bruce Springsteen got it right: Wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face.
