I highly recommend an over the door shoe organizer with clear pockets. There is very little counter space in a cruise ship cabin and an organizer like this for all the little toiletries, room keys, cameras, etc.

I've not done a lot of cruises, but I would bring a couple of dressy dresses for dinner. Beyond that, a bathing suit or suit(s)!

Thank you Day Vies. I will definitely bring nice dresses and have fun wearing them. I was instrumental in the decision for a cruise for this trip because of the night activities built into cruises that have been lacking at the exclusive resorts we usually stay at. The owner usually has to organize events for host late night parties in his suite. This will be a welcome break and change for all.

Definitely a bathing suit, a sarong, sun glasses, sun block, rubber soled shoes -- like flip flops or top siders, walking/running shoes for excursions shorts and or skirts (1-2 pairs), 3 nice dresses because you might want to do the sit-down dinner a few times and also for pictures, 3-5 tees, a denim jacket or cardi, 1 pair of jeans, and a scarf for style and warmth on the plane. Also save some room for workout gear if that is what you want to make time for on your vacation. I usually run 3-4 times while on a cruise for 7 days. Have fun!

I haven't been on a Tropical cruise. I've only been to Alaska. I would not bring a good swimsuit. On my cruise the hot tubs were over chlorinated. I had a dark chocolate brown swimsuit, that was milk chocolate by the end of the trip.

Wow, velvetychocolate has given an extremely thorough description of what to bring. I agree with everything she's said. My biggest problem is shoes - I always need like 12 pairs - flip-flops, work-out shoes, cute sandals for shore excursions, dress shoes, etc.

Oh wow, I knew I could count on your support to guide me! What wonderful responses! I guess part of the decisions will have to wait until we get more information on the Intenirary as the owner may schedule events ashore for our group as he often takes care of all expenses and even gives us cash to spend on souvenirs...

I will post pics of dress ideas based on what I currently own for your opinions this weekend... Going to be a busy first week of starting third year of homeschooling my youngest!!!!!

I mostly agree with the above. However, the formal dining areas have become incredibly casual, so while the "rules" still state that resort casual is the dress code, and that dressy attire is required for formal night, they do not turn anyone away, regardless of how casually they are dressed. Still and all, though, I find changing for dinner and partaking in formal nights to be one of the great pleasures of cruising. So check on how many formal nights you will have and plan accordingly.

Your shore excursions should determine what you wear, of course. If you choose to go caving or hiking, for example, you will need gear. But if you prefer to relax and hit the beach, a sundress and swimwear are fine. You can look into the possibilities before you leave for your cruise and decide if you want to snorkel, scuba, ride glass bottomed boats, kick back on the beach, go spelunking, hike or just rent a Jeep and go where you wish (a great option, especially on small places like Cozumel).

As for travel cups, we generally purchase drinks on deck, keep the cooler cups and are all set then to carry other beverages if we choose. They make great keepsakes and I find it easier than using space to pack them.

And go through your morning and evening beauty routines in your head and bring what you need. The on board "general store" is half to 2/3 alcohol and the rest is highway robbery if you need to buy an ibuprofen or a hair tie. So bring what you need and don't get robbed at the store!

Good luck to your DH! I hope you are able to take a cruise!

The biggest thing with a cruise is the fact that you'll need a change of clothes for dinner in the fine dining area of the ship - and further, you'll also need one or two 'formal' outfits for formal nights.

While on shore, it will be just fine to head out to see the sights in bermuda/clam type shorts and a nice top etc. but once you get back on board and you're getting ready for dinner, you'll need what they call "resort casual" - ie. slightly dressier clothing than you would have worn sight-seeing while on shore. No jeans.

I recommend *two* dresses that will work for one or two formal nights. In my opinion, a long gown isn't necessary, but you will want two cocktail type dresses for those formal nights (and not over-the-top, just a bit dressier than normal). On a 7 night cruise, there could be two formal nights. Five night cruise? Maybe just one formal night. Your DH will need a suit - a tux is not necessary, imo.

Dresses (of all kinds, casual and dressier) are perfect for a cruise - especially ones that you can casual-ize and then dress up a wee bit for dinners.

One pair of sandals - not for on shore, but for dinners. Slightly dressy and comfortable. For on shore you're going to want something more sturdy and comfortable - a pair of 'fashion' sneakers or good quality walking shoes will be ideal here.

I actually have my own list of "cruise essentials" - some fashion related, and some not, but perhaps it will help?

Cruise Essentials (for a warm destination):

very good walking shoes/sneakers for exploring 'on shore'

stylish bermuda/clam type shorts - one denim pair, and one pair that are sort of like khakis, but can be in any colour - white, olive green, black or what have you

one pair of very comfortable, but still dressy-looking sandals for dinners on board

Downy "Wrinkle Release" spray - you can buy a travel size, and re-fill it with the full size "Wrinkle Release" - get these at Target. Buy one or two travel sized "Wrinkle Release" sprays and also buy a larger, full-sized bottle to re-fill the travel sized bottles with for future travel - they don't allow irons in staterooms on cruises.

Dove white soap in a mini travel size - also found at Target. I have somewhat sensitive skin, and prefer Dove to whatever the hotel or cruise line might provide

Starbuck's "VIA" instant coffee tubes - you can find these in most any grocery store, but they are less expensive if you buy them at Costco. Reason? The on-board coffee isn't all that. I order coffee to my room in the morning - but it's kind of a 'dishwater' type coffee. I just add one or two of the Starbuck's "VIA" tubes to my pot of coffee, and I'm good!

Two commuter mugs - one for me, and one for DH - comes in handy if you just want to be on deck, hanging out, looking at the sights - you can have your coffee or other favourite beverage without wandering around dealing with a tiny "diner-style" coffee mug from the Buffet or what have you

Burt's Bees brand hand sanitizer - you can usually find these in grocery stores and so on - smells much better and works better than the usual gel-type hand sanitizers http://www.drugstore.com/burts.....tid=184090 . One for the room, one for your purse and one for DH's pocket or camera bag. This is kind of important - it's easy to get a cold on a cruise. Carry that hand-sanitizer spray with you wherever you go, and use it.

Several pairs of 'no-show' athletic type socks - some for you and some for DH - these *will* be needed for on shore sight-seeing.

Two really nice bathing suits that you feel good in and two cover-ups - highly recommended for a warm-weather cruise - one set will be hanging up to dry while you're wearing the other.

Several 'travel-friendly' dresses - ie. what Kristen of "Low Fat Dressing" used to refer to as Kohl's "Kick ..." dresses. Think BR wrap dress, think Nine West "Magic" dress and the like and you get the idea. Ideal for a warm-weather cruise. Throw in some Kut from the Kloth shorts (or other favourite brand), plus some of your favourite tops and your most comfortable shoes, and you'll be set.

Travel sized sunscreen - a must! Neutrogena has a few mini-sized travel sunscreen options - again, you will likely find these at places like Target and so on. I like Neutrogena "Baby" sunscreen in a tiny stick formula for travel : http://www.target.com/p/neutro.....A-11133569

Big floppy straw hat - yes, I know - something you wouldn't normally use, but I definitely recommend a hat. One for you and one for your DH too - doesn't matter if it's a baseball hat or what have you - but please *do* pack at least one hat per person.

Gorilla-pod - for attaching your camera to the balcony or ship railing, light weight and so worth it. http://www.amazon.com/Joby-JB0.....p-atf_titl

I hope you two get to go on a cruise this winter!

My husband's company announced a contest today for a cruise. I don't know any details but can safely assume that it will be 5 to 7 days to a tropical location in Late Jan or Feb. My husband has a great track record for winning these trips.
I've never been on a cruise and can tell you that this group loves to change several outfits a day. I was hoping to get some advice to guide me while summer clearance items are available to fill in holes.
My greatest appreciation in advance !
