I'm not sure I see a real difference between "dressy casual" and "dressy
lite". Wouldn't Angie just call this "Smart Casual"......more dressed
up than casual but not dressy.

You weren't the only one to indicate this, so I thought I'd explain it, with the three photosets attached to this post. It might make more sense if I included examples for all five of my categories

In the first set, the first outfit is #1 ultra-casual, as the tank top, the white denim shorts, and the sneakers are all extremely casual. The second outfit would be #2 casual. The shoes and the shorts are the same, but the top is dressier. Different look. The third photograph, #3 dressy casual, keeps the dressier top and casual shoes from outfit 2, and changes the bottom to a skirt. Even though it is a casual skirt, it is not as casual as the shorts. With one casual element, one dressy element, and one element in between, it goes in the #3 dressy casual category. Notice that the model in the fourth photograph is also wearing a dressy top, but is now wearing a dressy skirt, making the outfit basically dressy, but because she is still wearing the casual shoes, it goes in the #4 dressy lite category. The fifth photograph, obviously, is totally dressy, as now she is wearing dressy shoes, as well. Five different looks.

Let's go back to that first ultra-casual outfit in the first photograph to start the second photoset. The model in the second photograph has kept the very casual top and shoes, but is wearing a white denim skirt instead of white denim shorts. Again, while the skirt is not dressy, it is not as casual as the shorts, This not-so-casual item would place that outfit in #2. The third photograph, a #3 dressy casual outfit, keeps the casual top and shoes, but now includes a dressy skirt. While only one item is dressy, it is a material part of the outfit, which would place it in the #3 category. The #4 photograph is used again in this photoset, as it replaces another casual item (the top) with dressy, while including the shoes as the only casual item. And we end back up at the #5 dressy outfit.

Back to the ultra-casual outfit for one more photoset. The #2 outfit here has the shoes as the dressy item, while the top and shorts remain very casual. The #3 outfit keeps the very casual shorts, but replaces the casual top with a dressy top, causing the outfit to be both somewhat casual and somewhat dressy. The #4 outfit replaces the casual shorts with "dressy" shorts, but because shorts are obviously not dressy attire by nature, they would end up in category #4 . And we end back up at #5, replacing the dressy shorts with a dressy skirt, causing the new look to be dressy.

Does the distinction between #3 and #4 now make sense? #3 dressy-casual is about half dressy and half casual, while #4 is dressy enough to not mismatch with dressy outfits, but cannot go in the dressy category because one item is not-so-dressy.

It's naming the #4 that I cannot figure out. There has to be a better name than "dressy lite".

Not sure...but, I see a LOT of boards with very few pins in each and I
feel that defeats the point of categorizing. My inclination would be to
make fewer boards and, if one becomes unwieldly over time, split
it--making a new board and moving some of the pins into it. (You can
move pins between boards at any time.) I'd be inclined to group
together boards 3 and 4.

I know some boards are small, but photos are getting added. I can see combining some boards, but not across numbers. #4 dressy lite is basically a dressy outfit except for one casual item, while #3 is halfway between dressy and casual. A #4 outfit may be an button-front shirt, dress pants, and casual flat sandals, while a #3 may be the same top and sandals, but with khaki pants. I feel those two need to be separated, but I will keep your suggestion in mind.

I was hoping to find a better term than "dressy lite" to indicate the outfit that would be dressy except for one casual item. I've spent some time on Thesaurus.com, but nothing really seemed to do it.

I’d be tempted to call it Casual Dressy.., Category 3 is your casual
gussied up, but Category 4 is your dressy taken down a peg...

That sounds logical, except that I have a category called "dressy-casual", so the two names together would not work. Though, the name does actually fit. A #4 (which I am calling "dressy-lite for the time being) outfit is basically a dressy outfit, and would not really be out of place in a group of #5's, but cannot be on a #5 board because one item is casual, or at least not really dressy. For instance, dress pants with heeled or flat pumps, with a silk t-shirt rather than a button front top or collared blouse of some sort; that element of casual, even though she would not really be out of place. Or, something like a button-front blouse with a dressy skirt, and casual flat sandals (other than Birkenstocks). Again, a dressy outfit, but can't go on a #5 board because the sandals aren't dressy.

Your observations are loosely correct, except that I used dressy-casual as the center of the scale (#3), for outfits that are half dressy and half casual, with the extremes being outfits that are all casual (#1) and all dressy (#5), with the in-between categories of one dressier item in an otherwise all-casual outfit (#2), and one casual item in an otherwise all-dressy outfit (#4).

Basically, we both arrived at the same place, but our methods of getting there were different.

Relaxed Dressy?

I'll give the first one some thought. The first one came to mind some time ago, but it doesn't sound right to me. Maybe there's no good reason; it doesn't "sound" like an attire category.

But I agree with others that there's more to the equation than just

whether individual pieces are dressy or casual. In the same category on

your boards I saw outfits that looked pulled-together-casual and others

that looked...messy. Too-big top that hit at the wrong place on the

body, etc

Hmmm.... I know it's been a few days, but are you able to point to any specific examples? I'd be interested in taking a closer look.

P.S. How do I paste something as a quotation on here?

Most of what I see that I might label "dressy lite" seems to fall into the "sporty Luxe" category. I'm thinking of things like an oversized merino turtleneck worn with a flowing skirt and fancy expensive sneakers. Not something that most people would walk the dog in nor wear to work, but might be nice for a somewhat casual party or somewhat night out.

In particular I've been thinking a lot about how millenials are changing fashion with their transportation choices. Young ladies commuting by transit are unlikely to be wearing high heels. This type of look is common in Japan as well, from what I know.

Personally, I think that it is far more constructive to categorize where you yourself would be comfortable wearing particular outfits rather than worrying about the norm for dress standards in general. With the exception that obviously one has to take social appropriateness into account.

For example, today I saw two receptionists in the same office. One was wearing a striped jersey top with elbow length sleeves. The other was wearing a striped jersey top with some subtle decorative floral embellishments on the collar as well as a matching cardigan over it. The second lady seemed appropriate, the first seemed too casual to properly represent her office as being capable of hiring mature staff, (though she was over forty) and her outfit resembled the style of a teenager. Outfit completion is a big part of dress code, in my opinion.

I am not sure if this is the right category, there didn't seem to be a "perfect" category for my question, but here it is anyhow.

I am classifying photographs on Pinterest boards based on level of casualness / dressiness, and I am not sure what to call one of the categories. I will list examples below.

#1 -- Ultra-casual. All items very casual

#2 -- Casual. Like #1, but with one "dressier" item

#3 -- Dressy-Casual. Some dressy items and some casual items. Too casual to be dressy, yet too dressy to be very casual

#4 -- Dressy Lite. Basically a dressy outfit, but can't put it in #5 because one item is fairly casual.

#5 -- Dressy.

#6 -- Formal attire

It is #4 that I am unsure about. I feel as though there is a better term than "dressy lite". Any suggestions?

Examples can be found at
https://www.pinterest.com/fashionphotographs/
https://www.pinterest.com/DressesPhotographs/

I am in the process of moving boards due to Pinterest limitations. Any ideas would be appreciated.
