Jeneva, I live in a flat area of the Netherlands, but we do have some nice hills in parts of the country and it is just the way it is, people still don't see commuting as excersize, but just as commuting. Cycling is just one of the ways of transportation, eaqual to driving your car of taking the bus. Ans yes, it is less lazy, but still not considered as excerzise With my damaged knees I would like to have more gears when living in a hilly area, but most people just have 0, 3 or 7 gears.
See that old cloister on a hill (an ice pushed ridge)? My late brother lived there and he cycled to his work and home again.

HeleenH, I'm not sure where you are from but one thing that makes a HUGE difference in the amount of effort required is the inclusion of giant hills on the journey. My ride in to downtown is almost all downhill, but coming home there are some long, steep hills. I remember Berlin being flat as a pancake, which allows one to arrive at ones destination a bit more gracefully than having to pedal up giant hills as here in Seattle!

I love the way you see the commute as a workout, whereas no one over here would see it that way, we just see it as commuting Nevertheless, I did take on weight when I was ill and could only commute by car. And what a difference that was. Just like you mention, it took just as long and on the bicycle I can hop off and do my groceries or other errands (I commuted cross-town) and the wind in my hair blew all the office worries away, whereas they stayed in my head while driving a car.

Claire, I'm not in that great of shape...all the other bike commuters totally pass me by. I'm slow. I've only been doing it for about a month and I do it only 3-4 times a week, but I am working up to 5!

I started biking because it's a good way to get a workout in and basically takes the same amount of time as riding the bus - no joke! It takes me 40 mins and the bus takes between 30 and 40. I love being able to roll out of bed and just get on my bike. I'm much more efficient at getting ready for work AT work because I don't have as much to distract me and I'm more awake (touch of ADD here...)

I also am trying to get my plantar facitious (sp) under control...it flared up while I was training for a half marathon this last spring. Biking lets me rest it, for the most part (or, at least it doesn't bother it as much a running does...running is SO hard on the joints!)

Jenava! You look so amazing and....normal in your cycle clothes! This is very inspiring. You are in ah-mazing shape putting in all those miles. I think your character is probably stronger too! You go, girl!

I can't wait to start biking on errands in street clothes again now that the temps are under 100F. I have only been biking for excercise these past few months-- and very early in the morning was the only time I could stand to do it. Your outfits have given me some new ideas, thanks!

Vicki - do it! It's totally addictive! You'll discover your city/town in a whole new light when you have to really get through it on the bike. Today I was realizing how when we are in our cars we are really out of touch with what car pollution means. We sit in traffic and the air vent filters it out so it doesn't affect us. But on a bike...wow. My throat was burning today after riding down a stretch by the port with all the diesel trucks! YUCK. But there are positive things, too. Like how great the Alki trail is and how awesome it is that the city maintains that path.

Deborah, I wash mine the night before and blow it out. I bring a brush and blow dryer with me (in my panier!) and give it a little wet and quick dry right before work...it's pretty quick and painless.

sarah, full confession - I tried those pants on! They're scratchy which does not bother me...but they were definitely NOT something I could wear on their own. They'd be darling under a tunic or dress, though. I didn't buy them because they seemed a little too bulky and like not something I'd get a ton of wear out of. I bought this dress instead, which is from a different collection...Pre-Fall, I think. But it's tensel (lined in silk - ironically) and I had ridden downtown to shop when I bought it...it survived relatively unwrinkled in tissue in my bike bag. So I like to think it still fits into the "fashion + function" framework.

Jenava - what a great post! As Isis said, it's so great that you're getting in so many biking miles each day (with hills!). Your pannier IS a lovely shade of green. I definitely need those Philip Lim pants for my commute ; ).

I really like the way you layer your outfit to suit the commute. I love, love, love your green pannier and the way it makes into a should bag. Your Philip Lim was an added bonus, too. I love this post! Thank you!

I am going to have to try to get someone to take a picture of me WITH my bike, but in the mean time here are three outfits I've cycled in...Not sure if the outfits without the bike qualify as a submission...

Stylish Cycling means being able to use my bike just as most Americans do their car, without too much worry about my outfit. I was inspired to start cycling by my friends in NYC who do not own cars and get around by foot, subway, and bike all the time. My husband and I were also impressed by the bike lanes in Berlin and how easy getting around by bike looked there.

I don't own a car (we are a one-car household and my husband typically is the one who drives unless there are unusual circumstances). So being freed from Seattle's cumbersome Metro service (buses get stuck in traffic, too!) was a revelation for me! I bike about 6-7 miles one way to work - from West Seattle to Downtown, so about 13 miles total. There are some serious hills on that commute and I change my clothes at work to avoid getting stinky. But even in my "gear" I try to achieve a level of normalicy! I wear a black mini skirt over my bike capris, a grey tee, and a fleece in a beautiful color of pink. (Outfit #2)

For around town errands I typically wear a short skirt or dress and leggings with little sneakers. I've biked for groceries, to brunch, and to the beach just for the fun of it (back before our weather turned cold!) (Outfit #3)

At work, sometimes I have to go across town for meetings. On days I commute to work by bike I have been known to jump on my bike to get there faster. I try to wear bike-ready outfits on these days. (Outfit #1)

I also use a bike bag (pannier) that lifts easily off my bike rack and is a lovely shade of green. I actually have two of these that I use for commuting. Off my bike they look like normal bags and can be used with a shoulder strap.

My bike is nothing special - an earlier-90's Bianchi mountain bike that I've put new street tires, studded metal pedals, a rack, handlebars, and seat on. I've got to get my fenders on before the rain comes! Hopefully I can get a picture of me ON my bike this weekend. (-:

I'm thrilled that this topic has come up. I love riding my bike!

ETA, also, 3.1 Philip Lim Fall 2011 was inspired by bikes:
"It's about these chic women who ride bikes to work, to brunch, to a cocktail party," Lim said backstage before the show. "But how do you make everything functional without sacrificing form?"

I've added one of my favs from this show, courtesy of style.com
