Ladies, your suggestions are so exciting.

I had a sort of blockage, a tunnel vision of "something black and not shiny" with that jacket and my only black bag is a patent leather shopper.

Animal print: what a splendid idea, never thought about it ! And colours as well ! I think I'll get both, a zebra and a teal (or red). I've already (and effortlessly) persuaded myself that both will complement my black winter coat, my black blazer and my grey tweed jacket, so money well spent, n'est-ce-pas?

Would you favour something structured (like a satchel) or a slouchy style?

Thrilling days of research in front of me 'cause isn't the chase as good the catch ?

As soon as I get the bags, I'll ask my friend Jerry to take photos to show you the result of your terrific recommendations. Thanks a mil.

Agree non -shiny--suede, textured animal print. If you like color contrast, teals and blues would look good. I see it as a kind of "cool" neutral-brown (on my monitor) so cool burgundies or the blues as above.

My knee-jerk idea is to pair it with a bag that has a non-shiny texture. Animal print/calf hair would be lovely - not just leopard (might be "expected") but I could see this with zebra print too.

A pebbled leather (more matte) would work better than a patent. Red, cream. With gold or bronze hardware. Even black with gold hardware would work, for a more minimal look.

Or you could go with one of those logo print bags - Louis Vuitton? - if that's your thing.

In general I think you can treat this coat as you would any neutral. It's lovely and I am very impressed with your tailoring skills! Can't wait to see it on you.

What a gorgeous jacket! And wow, good for you for undertaking such an alteration. I can't sew a lick, other than hemming and putting on a button, so those of you who can sew just impress the heck out of me!

I could see a dark red satchel looking gorgeous with this jacket and dark jeans. Or even something with a bit of animal print on it.

I've just bought this jacket in Wallis. I had promised myself that I wouldn't buy anything this month, but when I saw that they had it in my size, how could I resist?
The warm pewter does magic for my colouring

The fit is fantastic, though I had to shorten the sleeves, which took me a whole afternoon because I wanted to keep the cuffs intact, so I had to cut at the armholes and sew back the sleeves. That's the sort of alteration that I always approach with a lot of apprehension and care, I have to say that I'm very proud of the result.

I need your suggestion as what colour/style of handbag would be best considering that I will wear it mostly with black straight cut jeans and black booties.
