Suntiger, your cover-ups sound like they are about form, not function. I am sure you are as lovely as ever in them, but please be careful of your skin! I know it's darker than mine, so it probably doesn't burn much, but melanin does not protect from melanoma or other cancers.

Hah Rachylou, I had one of those terrycloth strapless dresses too, with an elastic waist, in bright yellow. I think I bought it on my very first trip to Florida...somewhere in the 80s probably. It was totally useless in my normal life and I never wore it again!

Christina F...I really like that Jcrew tunic one, I didn't realize they sold stuff like that! A linen shirt would be good too if it was long enough...

texstyle that's a great idea, in fact I see a LOT of shirts like that at thrift stores, mostly in pretty good condition.

Kari those are great choices.

This isn’t a vacation wardrobe, but more when I’m en route to the lake or my apt pool, or on the way back and don’t want to walk through the courtyard or parking lot in just my suit, or while reading and sitting poolside. *grin*

I wear either:

An inexpensive cotton maxi dress that I picked up a couple years ago from Cost Plus World Market.

A hip length colorful kimono-style cotton robe.

Why: Light, dries easily, don’t cry if something happens to it, comfy and easy to throw on.

I usually wear one of DH's no longer used big cotton short sleeved shirts I have a white and a chambray type blue - they are long enough on me to cover my bottom and lightweight easy for the heat. But I'm VERY casual.

I have waaaay more cover ups than I really need for my lifestyle. It's very much a dream lifestyle thing. What I use depends on where I am. I am bringing this J Crew tunic one one to Asia with me (we will go to the beach in Thailand), along with a white linen button down that I can also use as a cover up for temples in Thailand & Cambodia.

I am also bringing swim shorts and a rash guard, also in Finds, for water sport type days.

I like a plain coverup so it does't clash with whatever suit I am wearing. A few years ago I got a tee-shirt dress similar to this for a cruise and it worked to get me from the ship to the beach just fine. Haven't worn it since but I expect to in January when we go again :)

Suntiger - that's a great way to categorize them. You sound like you know what you are talking about....

and yes Sal, the patterned idea sounds much more sensible to me.....

Just adding - yes to a colour or pattern if you are like me!! I have ruined two white ones with sunscreen (I no longer buy that clear stuff that sprays on but that is the culprit). I do think a pattern is easier....

To me swimwear coverups/post swim fall into a few categories:
Beachy glam-the sarong or sleeveless dress variety, add metallic sandals This is assuming you've already dried off.

Throw on and go- when heading home from the pool and don't feel like changing cause its 95 degrees out. Swim skirt, mesh, or otherwise chlorine proof.

Water sports (SUP, SUP yoga, kayak or the like)- I use a skort and matching tank (finds), optional bikini underneath.

Post swim cozy (capsule in progress)- something comfy and loose to put on after doing laps when its cold and you don't want to put workwear back on.

I have no doubt that the store I was in would "specialize" in their pricier things--because of the store's location in the mall, and the mall's location in the city.

Fashintern, I haven't checked the prices in the store, but did see a few cover-ups for under $75 online. I also saw a lot online at much higher price points...some of those fabrics and prints were really lovely. I haven't really done enough looking to tell which price ranges are most prominent.

I wear this rash guard from title nine, although I guess it's not really what you are looking for. I tried on the one kkards mentioned from athleta and also really liked it.

I like mine because it zips up-no awkward pulling over the head when wet. I took it to the beach last year and I ended up wearing it in the ocean a lot even though it was hot- better protection than just sunscreen. I wore a big scarf/sarong for walking around.

I also sometimes wear this dress for going to the pool with the kids. It's quite versatile.

Online there is a LOT of really nice stuff, in different "collections". Some is quite pricey and some more reasonable. If anyone else is in the market for this type of stuff you might check it out, I certainly plan to.

Thanks the Cat, Lucy, LoriFLA, bj111, cardiff girl, brieN, bijou, jenniz..so many great suggestions!

Angie thanks, and the long caftan idea is also a possibility. The right one could work as a maxi dress too. I need a beach cover up so rarely that I'd like to get double duty out of it! (Kind of the opposite of your suggestion Bijou)

SarahD8 I could quote you exactly!

RunCarla what an incredibly good reminder about choosing a color...I have the exact opposite "super power" as Angie when it comes to white clothing...gets stained or dirty almost the minute I take it out of the closet.... add sunscreen etc to that mix makes it worse. Prints or saturated colors it is! Unfortunately these types of garments are now gone from TJmaxx etc but I'll look online.

Staysfit, great reminders about sun protection. I am fair skinned and burn easily, which is part of the reason I end up spending so little time hanging around beaches.

Fashintern good idea about Soft Surroundings...I just bought a dress from them and haven't worn it yet but liking it a lot
.

Your idea of a dress that could do double duty sounds like smart packing to me. I have done that at times, also have a couple tunics from Soft Surroundings that were designed as cover-ups, and a couple sarongs that I then spread out on the lounge chair or sand. If I wear a sarong for anything more than walking from hotel room to pool, then I add a top for sun protection. I have a short robe I sometimes take along, or might wear one provided by the hotel. In other words, I’m not picky about it and totally decide based on the situation.

I see all the commentary about sun protection, and your response up top. You can certainly get a dress that includes it, from Lands End, Orvis, swim.com or more fashionable providers. But plain material worked just fine bitd, as long as I wasn’t wearing it over a burn. My mom, sisters, and I all burn easily—she always got us coverups for that reason, and it is still in my mind when I consider what to wear. My shoulders, décolletage, and sometimes forearms burn the worst, long before I need to think about my legs. Ymmv.

I would like to weigh in, although I am late to the party.....I take yearly beach vacations and have worked as a lifeguard. I think the best coverup is a light color, has UPF, has long sleeves and a high neckline, as well as providing as much coverage for the rest of your body. I might pair a long sleeve UPF shirt with a zipper on the top, with a long sarong. That would make both pieces easy to put on and remove, but also breezy and cool. Then add a wide brim hat, sunnies, sandals, sunscreen and a smile! :-). Sunburn kills a vacation. A V-neck line, short sleeves, or any exposure can be a problem on a beach where the sun is reflected in both water and sun!

Hi Chris, I have one kaftan ( in NZ we spell it with a k not a c for some unknown reason) and I brought it to Vietnam with me for hotel pools. It is semi sheer with sequins and maybe a bit more OTT than what you want, but FYI here is a pic only just taken, by the pool this afternoon x

Ha! DH and I just committed to 2 weeks in Curaçao in February! Woohoo! Like you, I’m a fan of a short dress with 3/4 sleeves for the dash from hotel room to pool or beach. I usually pick up something cheap and cheerful - a dress with lots of busy pattern, since it is likely to get stained by sunscreen and faded by the combination of chlorine, salt water, and hot sun. Winners, Marshall’s, Walmart. I would love a Tommy Bahama dress if I could find one in washable silk the same as DH’s shirts! Beautiful material and washes like a dream.

Photo below is a capsule put together for a 10 day Caribbean vacay about 4 years back. Top left is dress (paisley on black) I wore - sometimes with cropped cotton pull on pants, for just what you describe.

I VERY rarely encounter this use case, but I do have a couple of mid-thigh-length, 3/4-sleeve, boho cotton popovers that I use as coverups. Works well for me -- breezy yet covered. I like the idea of a longer version of that (top or bottom of knee length) if I wanted to be slightly more "presentable." I'm intrigued by the idea of swanning about in a caftan but I would definitely need a petite version!

I have a long chiffon jewelled kaftan. Mine is rather sheer, but that way it does not look like I am wearing a dress, but rather a cover-up. I always sit in the shade and use sunscreen.

I really like my cover-up from Coolibar. It's UPF 50+ with longer sleeves and a hood, so good sun protection. It's opaque, so you feel covered up walking around. It hits mid-to-lower thigh and I think it's a flattering length. One of my favorite features is the full zipper up the front so you can unzip at the pool or beachside to expose as much as you wish, and you can control if you want the top part zipped or bottom or neither. Easy on and off (I don't care for things that you have to pull over your head). The material is thin and stretchy (and very comfortable) but not especially clingy. Has washed well so far. Comes in a ton of colors. I guess the only downside would be that maybe warmer than the more sheer coverups.
Coolibar also makes different styles of cover-ups - sleeveless or shorter, etc - if there is something that you think might work better.

I just wear a big old T-shirt.l know, very glam!but I was sorely tempted by a loose shirt style cover up this year.Having studied all the options on the beach in Spain this year,l think that this was the chicest option for all ages.
