Thanks very much, everyone, for your commiseration re cold weather fashion and for your helpful suggestions. Please note I posted a new thread: WIW Wintry Jazz Concert. I can't link it with my Nook; if someone could link it to this post, that would be fab!

ECTEACHER-- Thank you for your kind words. :)

AIDA--I tried several iterations of the ponte pants (which I adore) but don't yet have the outdoor footwear to pull off the look I wanted. My snow boots were a nonnegotiable, and I felt self conscious about how they looked over the ponte pants.

L'ABEILLE--Actually, they should have all been staring with admiration at your outfit, which sounds fab!

RACHYLOU--Thx. for the laugh.

I'm too late, but as your local Hipsterville rep, I just wanted to say I'd stick a thick knit grey pompon/bobble hat on my head and do a cat eye eyeliner. Bonus points if it cost $40 and was hand knit by a hipster during Uber rides (otherwise, nice $5 versions at Target...) (apologies, I felt a great need to share this tip, which I developed for my work children... )

I went to a jazz concert a few years back... I think it was shortly before I discovered YLF. It was organized by a jazz musician as his own birthday party bash, it was held at the French language university, and we were invited by DH's music instructor, who was playing trumpet.

I was quite pleased with the outfit I came up with; I felt very Mad Men elegant (more refined and bombshell than my usual). I wore a fitted red sweater, a grey and burgundy check pencil skirt, black tightss, heels, and a fur scarf. (Can't recall if I wore boots; it WAS winter, and I remember which coat I wore.)

Then I got there, and almost EVERYBODY was in all black. Duh. Jazz, university, musicians, French...

That's all I have to say.

(So, black turtleneck, black pants or jeans, and a black beret.)

If there's snow on the ground and you have to walk, the flares will likely get quite wet so I'd vote against them; if you knew you could pop into the building straight from the car then that might work. I vote the gray cropped ponte pants paired with nude knee highs and, if you have them, taller shaft booties. Will be super paired with the fringed blazer and a soft silky blouse.

Okay, it seems the flared ieans and fringe blazer are strong contenders. Let me think about tops a bit. And jewelry. Someone needs to invent heated necklaces!

Maybe I can wear my black snowboots under my jeans--given today's weather, I seriously doubt I'll be the only person wearing boots.

More later...

I hear your challenge ... I put on a nice outfit and then ruin it with winter boots and puffer ... *sigh* ... needs must in the winter! I think the blozer and the flares would be really good, maybe with a simple black top and necklace underneath OR the wrapped thing and the ponte pants, which might work better with warm boots? All the pieces you've pinned look current to me, so I think you will be very hip

First, sorry I haven't been participating on the Forum much recently. I'm trying to figure where, if anywhere, I want to go from here with my style--my place of "I have enough", as Carter recently posted about. I may do a post about it.

But anyway...this evening I'm going out with a couple of girlfriends to supper followed by a jazz concert. The concert is in a cool, old restored building downtown, with a large upstairs ballroom where the concert will be. Wooden floors, exposed beams--that sort of decor.

I want to dress in something that's at least a tiny bit hip (a tiny bit might be as hip as I'm capable of getting!) but am extra challenged because it's bitter cold and snowy today and I may have to walk a few blocks from the car to the venue. Also, the room itself might be drafty and chilly, and I really have a low tolerance for feeling cold.

My most practical winter go-to's are my black puffer and "sensible" boots. I suppose neither of these will help with my quest for a tiny bit of "hip." ☺

I suppose I should also leave my wool turtlenecks home and wear a top with a lower-cut neckline, right? I have the Banana Republic black fringed blazer. Maybe that, a non-turtleneck, non-wool top, and...hmmm...what kind of pants? Flare jeans? (I could sneak a thermal layer under them.)

Below are some recent acquisitions. I have the NYDJ ponte pants in slate grey. Because I'm tall, they fit me like ankle pants.

Of course, I have plenty else in my closet too--if you offer general suggestions, I can hopefully find items which will work.

Okay, please help this cold, non-hip, midwest, middle-aged chick find her inner tiny bit of hip!
