Julie, I like 3, 4, and 5. Attractive and appropriate. I am in the exact same situation as you, and part of me thinks that I shouldn't wear anything too bright because this is all about my student, not me, and she tends not to wear very bright colors. But our graduation isn't for another couple of weeks, so no decisions needed yet.

My vote is 3/4, with court shoes (low, closed pumps) and jewelry. It's happy. 5 would be fine too, but I find it businesslike, not as celebratory.

I like the skirt. Runcarla's inspiration collection is great for styling ideas. Could work with dressy footwear and a plain woven tee for the graduation. The dress in #5 is totally classic and a failsafe choice if that doesn't pan out.

Do yo have a pile of pearls you could add to the blue sweater, lace skirt combo? It would 'bookend' the cream skirt.

Here's another white skirt attempt...for some fantasy event at which i would wear uncomfortable shoes. :)

Thanks unfrumped and Robin, this has been interesting and helpful. You can probably tell, I never dress up...I own not a single pair of dressier shoes that I would actually wear to an event involving walking. Oops.

What are your school,0 colours? Also, what are the colours of your own hood and your faculty? I'm assuming your robe is black, so correct me if I'm wrong. 3/4 followed by 5 get my vote.

The lace skirt is lovely, but suited for another occaision. Date night? Maybe a soft pale blue sweater with silver accessories? Joy's layers of white and cream sounds delicious.

Welcome! I really like the wrap dress, looks very nice on you and I think would be appropriate for a graduation. I would like it with slightly higher heels but also nice as is. The white skirt is pretty but I also think it needs different tops than you have here.

Julie, great pics, you look fab in the wrap dress; if you are trying for some special- occasion gravitas, that is a great choice. The #3 outfit is really pretty also, more casual but not necessarily too much so fit outdoor spring grad. Slightly dressier shoes would help. A block heel coukd be comfy in some brands, but you could still do flats- I often amcsng tolerate any heel for something that might last several hours & involve standing & walking. just would look for ones with a little more structure than a bare- bones ballet flat , and maybe some small interesting detail.

Bonnie, you might be right, but given our particular college I think a cardigan will be dressy enough. Or nothing, as the outside part of the day I will have my robe and hood.

Tisa, not too blunt, I totally need advice, especially with that skirt as you can see. I don't like tucking in at all and just have been at a loss regarding skirts in general - other than a jeans skirt, this is the only one that survived my closet purge. As for shoes, I am definitely leaning toward the ballet flats for graduation. Thank you

Christina, yes it's good to think of the practical. Last year it rained, so our reception will be inside, but there will be lots of walking! I'm definitely wearing comfortable shoes.

Jenni NZ, thanks so much, that dress has served me well. And I've been wondering about an orange/blue combination like you suggest. I love orange, but am definitely more of a cool-color wearer.

JAileen, thanks. You are right, for the ceremony it won't matter except for shoes. I'm in the college of Science (not known for our fashion) and I can almost guarantee someone will be wearing shorts under their robes.

The Cat, good ideas...I agree that a dress is the way to go here. Will work on all of these skirt ideas!

Staysfit, YES! Thats exactly how I'm feeling about this. It will be so fun to celebrate and meet everyone's families. You've got me considering the orange combo. Bright colors definitely make me happy. Dress #4 is for me the safe choice while still feeling joyful, and will probably be the most likely to let me forget about the clothes and focus on the occassion.

Thank you all, this is so helpful!

I vote for #5 dress. It looks great on you.

I also like the white skirt, it's gorgeous, but none of the tops are right for it.
The orange top in #7 is too casual, #8 top has the same problem and it doesn't look nice tucked in.
The blue top in #5 is too long and too busy for the skirt, but the blue colour does look great on you and the neckline is very nice too (not too open).
A bit shorter blue top with a less busy pattern would look great with your white skirt and together they would make an appropriate outfit.

Your ballet flats are your best shoes, while shoes in #8, #2 and #3 look too casual for the occasion.

I hope I haven't been too blunt with my opinions. You got some very good suggestions and advice from other forum members, so I'm sure you'll figure something out, and hope you have a great time at graduation!

P.S.: I like the colour of the dress in #3/#4, too, but for some reason #5 looks more polished in the photos.

Spring weather can be changeable, so I'd choose a dress that could be worn with a topper or lightweight coat. The dresses are all really nice but my thought is that you might look for a topper that is a bit dressier than a cardigan.

I kind of like the white skirt with the coral/orange print tank the best, my second choice would be the dress in picture 4. I don't think there is too much going on with pairing the white skirt and a print top. I think it looks great together! It's fun, it's pretty, it's playful, it's happy and joyful. What could be better for such a wonderful occasion than honoring your PhD students who have worked hard and long to reach this goal? You may be meeting their parents, their families, etc. It is time to wear something cheerful, happy, warm and memorable. DH is a college professor. I go to graduation events every year and I see what people wear. I have two graduation events this week. For one (tonight) I am wearing a coordinated printed silk blouse and pants set. For the other I am wearing either a royal blue dress or a fuschia dress, it depends on the weather. All of my options make me feel happy. It's most interesting when someone is wearing something that makes a statement about how they feel about the occasion, or about their role as a professor.

Which of your choices make you feel the happiest? Maybe that is the one you should wear.

For a graduation, I would suggest #5, but change the accessories. How about a mid-heeled shoe in blue, black or metallic? And how about a necklace in metallic or one or more bright colours? If it is cold, you could wear the dress with a light woolen camisole, opaque hosiery in blue or black, and a colourful scarf.

Anyway, I vote for a dress/skirt outfit. This will be a very special occation, one to remember, so allow yourself to "stand out" (in a positive sense) with a feminine outfit in bold/bright colours. You look so great in skirts and dresses! And there will be countless other occasions for wearing trousers and neutral colours. ;-)

The offwhite skirt is very beautiful. As there is "a lot going on" in the skirt itself, it will often look better with solid coloured tops than with patterned ones. I think you can wear the skirt with many colours. For a graduation, it would be elegant with an offwhite pullover/sweater or blouse. Or you could wear the offwhite skirt with a top in different colour, say a silky blouse in brown, cobalt blue or red (perhaps with matching shoes), and then, for a casual elegant look, wear an offwhite cashmere/pashmina shawl around your shoulders.

Actually, an offwhite shawl would look fab over many other outfits too, (including your cobalt blue dress) and be useful for many later occasions as well, year round.

My favorites are 4 and 5. I think the skirt would look nice with a top the same color, maybe a luxe sweater. All of these look dressy for a reception. I guess it doesn't matter what any of them look like for the ceremony since it would covered by your gown.

I adore dress 2, great colours, you are so clever to have sewn it and how great that it still fits! The colour of the sandals you have on with it is good but I wonder if the blacker sandals in pic 1 would look more dressy with it. I have been to both my daughter's graduations in the past 5 years and it felt good to wear dressy but comfy shoes, a lot of walking and standing.
Re the skirt, I love it with the orange top. You don't happen to have orange or white sandals or the pretty blue that's in the orange print, to pick that out do you? And blue earrings too in that case...

I'm going to go the practical route with my advice, having been through one of these shindigs. If it's at all going to be hot where you live, wear the coolest outfit. Those robes are not breathable. If you go with a cardigan, you may want to put it aside until afterwards. If the reception is outside, find out if you can if it's going to be on the grass (mine was on a grassy area of campus). In that case, you'll want wedges or flats, like in your pics. I don't know if they're going to make you line up and march in. You may be standing for a while before that happens, if so.

The hooding is such a wonderful moment - enjoy!

Thanks!

Delurked, number 2 is actually a cotton dress i made back before I had children and had time to sew! So, in real life it looks a little less fancy than 3/4, which is silk. But I still like both.

Sheila, thanks for the ideas! I will definitely try the cobalt sweater. I might also try pairing with a more casual jean jacket or something, as i might wear it more if it didn't feel quite as fancy. But yes it has ALGO and the prints do seem like a bit much.

I like 3/4 too, but think about where you will be sitting. If it is bleachers, something that you can climb in.
The white skirt is very pretty. Agreeing with Sheila, a white or off white silk or cashmere top or white or ivory silk tee with a dressy cardigan. If you keep the top simple but lux, the shirt will be the star. The dark sandals look too heavy for the delicate skirt. If you want to dress it down, how about a white denim jacket? The whites do not need to match, especially if you have three shades. One of the most interesting outfits I've ever seen was a beautiful white lace skirt with a white lace top but in a whiter shade, and ecru silk cardigan. I think shoes were silver pumps and accessories were silver. The mismatch of whites made the outfit.

Here is one idea: button up your cobalt sweater and see if you like the way it looks with the skirt. Maybe turn it around (buttons on the back) and add some pearls around your neck, if you've got any. Just test-drive this and see how it feels to you.

I like 3/4 for graduation. Very nice combination.

That skirt is gorgeous and it has a lot going on (or, ALGO as we like to abbreviate here on YLF). The printed tops don't seem right to me, too busy, I think. The fabric of the solid top doesn't match the richness of the skirt, making it seem under-served by the top. I am thinking that some kind of a summer-weight silk/cashmere sweater or top in a pastel shade might look good but you look great in richer tones, so maybe not a pastel.

Hmmm...have to give this some more thought. Maybe a really big, bold print, like an over-sized floral in a high-quality fabric? Maybe something in a creamy ivory that complements the tones of the skirt? Wow this is not easy, I can see why you haven't been wearing this but maybe now is the time.

Yay for you posting.

I personally like 2 or 5, followed by 4 for graduation, as those look the most dressy to me.

I'll defer to others for he white skirt. I like skirts with lightweight short sleeve sweaters and shorter tops than what I wear with pants.

Hello fashionable people,
This is my first post, and I feel a little funny posting photos of myself...but, I'd love to hear your advice!
Graduation is coming up, and I will be "hooding" my PhD student. So, I'll be in cap/gown/etc, but there will be a nice reception afterward where I'll probably ditch the regalia.
So, here are some basic options. Essentially the sum total of my nicer spring clothes. Though if its cold I might rethink a pants option. Thoughts? Also, comments on how to wear that white skirt are welcome, I've had it for like 500 years and I feel like I should try wearing it more.
Thanks!
