Daria, I don't have much to add to what others have said. Just in case no one mentioned this, I found that using a microfiber towel (instead of a regular loop towel) to squeeze out water helps to maintain wave/curl with less frizz.

I didn't read all the posts, but in case someone hasn't recommended this site yet, I could mention Naturally Curly site. Great information about how to style and care for curly hair. I wouldn't cut your hair shorter personally, on the contary, I would grow it longer

I really don't think I should give advice given how mine looks today, as you can see on my thread. But I will anyway!

The difference I see btw the salon day and the DIY day is that the curls in the salon picture are more defined and also more stretched out. I really think you need a product for control...to help the curls have structure and hold. It looks like on your own they are not as separated or structured.

I second...third, fourth?...the Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse. To me it doubles as a moisturizer and a control product. But I also like Aveda Be Curly and one advantage of that is if you are near an Aveda store or salon, they have travel bottles of their products so you can experiment for less $.

Also, check the Aveda website to see a video on the Be Curly prep serum...have you tried that technique of twisting spirals? I think that would give you more structured and stretched out curls than you'd get from just scrunch and dry. The technique would work with any product...it's almost like setting them how you want them to dry.

But don't look at mine today...it really went wrong!

Gaylene - nice to meet a fellow frizzy hair club member! Thanks a lot for the insight. You are absolutely right that our hair does require styling products, and that not all products are created equal.
Unfortunately, it's such a costly trial and error process to find one that works.

My hair texture is exactly like yours and Aida's. Aida was the one who finally set me on the right path after years of trying to beat the curls/waves/fizz into submission.

The inverted angled bob Aida sports is a really good cut for our hair type for a couple of reasons: first, the cut provides a structure and shape that comes through even when our hair starts to frizz and do its own thing. The cropped layered back just looks more interesting if you use some product like sea salt spray (like B&B Surf Spray) or a fibre gum (Osis Thrill) to keep the uplifted look going at the back--think drama instead of a frizzy undefined mass.

And the Oribe curl mousse (thanks so much for this rec, Aida!) isn't the same as other curl mousses and serums. It's pricey, but it works like nothing else if I want a defined curl. If I'm in a hurry, it alone makes the difference between a bad and good hair day. I'll sometimes mix in a dab of curl cream (Osis Curl Me Soft) with the mousse if I'm airdrying to eliminate any crunchiness. If I'm blowdrying for smoother, wavier look, I've become a huge fan of Kevin Murphy's Anti Gravity Oil Free Volumizer and Smooth Again Anti-frizz Treatment. Aida is right in saying that our hair type requires products, so it pays to experiment because the results given by different products can differ dramatically. We have "fussy" hair, it seems.

Finally, I found it easier to think "French girl " hair instead of "American" hair. If you google "French girl hair", you'll see a much looser, softer, more "undone" look than deliberately shaped styles so common in North America. Those defined, deliberate curls produced at a hair salon are really hard to do on your own with our hair type.

I was just thinking that Daria. A shorter haircut will look more intentional.

Btw I have lesser frizz when I blow dry too! Air drying my hair really causes frizz, unless I use an anti-frizz serum while my hair is still damp. Even then, the frizz eventually returns.

Maneera - I have not tried the specific product Aida recommended, but I suspect Matrix elixir in my finds is pretty similar, and it did work (but not overnight..). And I'm not convinced that conditioners necessarily make hair frizzy, at least not all of them. The Redken one seemed to have added some structure and my hair would've definitely looked more limpy without.
Thirkellgirl - thank you! I definitely don't have time to blow dry..
Astrid - yes, in the first picture it's air dried. And I'm pretty convinced it increases the frizz for me (vs. blow dry) - go figure!

Do you ladies think I should go much shorter next time and make it look like intentional mess?

I think it looks good. Did you let it air dry in the second picture? I wouldn't take #1 as the goal, when I had long hair I have never ever managed to make it look like directly after the cut. And stylists always managed to create curls with a blow dryer while the only thing I managed was a mess. So I always did the air dry thing to reduce the frizz. Have you tried plopping your curls?

I think it looks good! And I don't see THAT much difference in the two photos. It looks like a good cut but if it's an awful lot of trouble to do what she did, I'd probably skip it, because it looks good in the second one!

The hair looks good Daria! But I kind of thought you'd go shorter!

I remember Aida mentioning a curl mousse. Haven't you tried that?

From personal experience, I can tell you that I find conditioner adds to frizz, especially in high humidity. I prefer to skip the conditioner and use a hair mask. I use Schwarzkopf Bonacure Repair Rescue Treatment Hair Mask because I do a smoothening treatment for my hair (naturally my hair is weirdly wavy and pretty damn frizzy) but I find that this really helps. Since you have such curly hair, leave in conditioner probably makes it limp and still frizzy? Maybe you should try the curl mousse Aida suggested.

Thanks again to Aida and all the ladies for the advice. Here is an update and a brief review of some products I recently tried - in case somebody finds it helpful.
I went with a longer and less dramatic version, given that it was my first experience with the stylist. So she pretty much just added layers and kept the length.
Now the tricky part - the styling. The hairdresser used leave-in conditioner (Angel brand; not available online) and blow dried it, resulting in well-defined curls in pic #1.
In her opinion, I could use any leave-in conditioner and let the hair air-dry.
Well.. so far all my attempts have resulted in what can be best described as frizzy mess.
The best attempt (photo #2) has been reached with Redken leave-in conditioner.
Matrix curl-defining elixir kind of worked as well but the result didn't hold overnight.
SheaMoisture conditioner simply didn't do anything (and maybe even contributed to frizz).

I appreciate the rundown of your routine, Aida. I have fine, wavy hair and am always trying to find products to coax out the curl and tone down the frizz. I had a drugstore product that worked wonders for me, but it went out of production, so I've been searching high and low for a replacement regimen.

Just as an FYI, the first photo you posted will give you a more vertical shape (with longer layers, a little less variation); the second will give you a rounder shape (more extreme variation in the layers and some that are much shorter, this is more similar to mine). Either style would be nice

Unfortunately it's tough to find good photos of actual curly hair that show their cuts well. Truly, the layering that works for straight hair which is then curled does differ from what we're after. And it's also different than what thicker curly haired gals are after; this type of layering could result in an afro on them.

Here are a few photos of my angled bob, going longer to shorter (all older photos). You can see in all of them, but in the last in particular, how high up the layers are and how they are actually angled along with the bob.

And also a few photos that I've shown my stylist over the years. #4 and 5 show the high volume really well. #6 is actually the photo I took in when I first got my angled bob. And #7 has some layering similar to the photo you've shown above on actual curly hair; I think that's probably a good starting place, but with the caveat that the "volume" band needs to sit higher up on the face (more like 4/5, but doesn't have to be quite that extreme).

Aida, so glad you checked in and thanks so much for taking your time to write it all up! Much appreciated.
You are spot on right. My volume always ends up being below (like an explosion, not in a good way), which I always attributed to my lack of hair. Glad to hear there is hope to amend it with more layers.
Are there any pinterest images I could bring to the hair stylist?
Will look at your product links and re-read all the info later!

Checking in! Yes I really do have fine, thin hair so thanks for thinking that I don't :)

I agree with others, layering is what you need. I like the shape of the cut you've linked to, however those same layers are not quite going to work with our hair texture. For one, it looks like that woman's hair is straight and then curled with an iron. You will be hard pressed to get similar results if you only air-dry, too. Regarding the layers in the photo: If you look at the lengths in the photo, you can see that there is some variation but we need it to be a bit more extreme. So that the layers are what's adding body, not necessarily the curls themselves (not sure that makes sense). If the stylist you are going to is familiar with curly hair, that'll be a huge help! I usually explain my desired layering by saying that I want the volume of the cut to be focused from top-of-the-brow to top-of-the-lips. That's not to say the layers themselves will be cut that short -- it's that once they're cut and curled, the volume of the hair should be focused on that area, and the layers are what gives that shape. (Once that volume drops down lower, the top gets flat and we start veering into triangle-head territory. Not fab!) I have found that adding some unevenness to the lengths of the layers helps smooth the final shape out, too.

For myself, I style almost entirely with a blow dryer; air drying simply
can't get me the volume I'm after. I do something similar to what Peri
describes (volumizing mousse at the roots, curl creme for the rest,) except that I use the dryer all the way through (with a diffuser, head flipped upside down). I will also use dry shampoo for a little extra texture, along with some hair spray at the roots once everything is dry for even more lift; in the summer I add a little sea salt spray. You would be shocked at how much product goes into my hair! If you're sticking with air drying, I think just using a little curl mousse on the lower half coupled with a good finger shake once dry might be enough; you could also try the dry shampoo, particularly if you don't wash every day (I wash every 3-6 days, depending on how much volume I've slept out of my hair).

Also have to give a little shout out to frizz. Honestly, being a card
carrying member of the fine/thin/curly club I really think it's one of
the best things we can use to give the illusion of thicker hair. Most
people can't tell the difference between "oh no what's with these frizzy
curls" and "hey check out my beautifully formed non-frizzy curls" --
they usually just see "curly hair". So! My suggestion is to focus your
efforts on the top layer of hair, what most people will notice; if you
make that look nicer, you can get away with frizzies underneath that
will actually boost your volume. One of the easiest ways to do this: once you've parted your hair (product all in), twist little 1/4" sections all the way around the crown along the part and give a good scrunch; those sections will end up with a more defined, neat looking curl than what's underneath.

The most important three things are going to be the cut, your shampoo/conditioner (definitely look for sulfate free, especially if you don't use any other products; it makes a huuuuge difference in the lightness once dried!), and I would suggest using a lightweight curl product to encourage those curls to come out.

Adding some of my products in Finds. Not all, just some of the most important. If I linked them all you would definitely think I was a crazy person Dry shampoo, volumizing root mousse, sea salt spray (non drying!), conditioner, and curl mousse. If you only did ONE thing, I highly recommend trying the curl mousse!

what about a bob? Curly hair looks nice in a bob.
SOmething like this (but maybe no bangs?)

Would you consider a Keratin treatment? I have frizzy hair with curl and between the bleach, blow dryer and flat iron I was wasting a lot of time, spending money trying products that didn't achieve the result I was hoping for and all those appliances and bleach were hard on my hair.

Took the risk last week and so far I am very happy with the results. Discussed it with my stylist and she thought it would be worth the try. Luckily she also told me they have a "model" program where the cost was 50% less ($65.00). The woman who did it has been out of school for 2 years and I felt very comfortable with her working on my hair. I suspect she charges less because she has not reached the Master Stylist level yet. Anyway...hope i am not providing too much info. but it might be an option to consider.

Kristine - you are absolutely right, I struggle much more in the summer than I do in winter.
Word Lily - will look up DivaCurl, thank you!
Astrid - I agree with you. This new hard stylist comes recommended as somebody who knows what to do with curly hair. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Peri - thank you so much, will read your thread once I get a chance.

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and got some good suggestions about styling options:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....er-methods

My hair is very weather driven, so I can smooth it out during cooler months but not during heat and humidity. What is working for me now is using a volume mousse (Matrix Amplify Volume) and anti-frizz gel (Redkin Velvet) at night after washing my hair, and blowing that dry...not in any round brush perfection kind of way, just dry with some root lifting. Then in the morning I wet my hair just from the ears down, put in a small amount of Aida recommended Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse, twist spirals, squeeze out extra water with a paper towel, diffuser dry for about two minutes, and then hands off! Air dry the rest of the way and then use a wide tooth comb and fingers from underneath to fluff it up and break up the spirals cause I don't like that piecey, got-a-lot-of-product-in-it look on me.

Sounds complicated but it really is not...splitting the routine into PM and AM helped me a ton as far as time and morning ease. The problem is on days where I don't have an hour to air dry. Still haven't solved that one yet!

Another product I like is Aveda Be Curly cream...not the serum, that is too flattening on me. The cream gives more boost and control for fine hair I think. But, hair products are second only to skin care when it comes to YMMV. I do think from your pictures what you mostly need is some kind of curl enhancing, moisturizing goo...something to help curls form and stay put. That's me too...my hair is super fine and medium curly. I can smooth out pretty easily when it isn't so humid, but summer choices are to encourage and strengthen curls or descend into limp frizz. There's no way I could get anything approaching fab without some kind of product in there!
