I have no problem discarding clothes that I haven't worn but my shoes...I'm a shoe hoarder. If I had to pick my absolute favorites I'd have to say my driving moccasins which I wear year round and my Frye riding boots that have a tiny heel on them in cognac because I put them with everything.

Well, most of them WOULD have to be pried from my cold, dead fingers, given that I've purged most of what isn't working. That said, here are my current faves...most are workhorses, the sequined oxfords, not so much.

My black riding boots! I like how they make my often otherwise structured work outfits a little more fun, while still having structure of their own and not being entirely casual. Plus, they make wearing skirts and dresses in the fall and winter a lot more reasonable. When my last pair became worn and stopped fitting well due to my weight loss, I definitely prioritized getting a new pair to replace them.

I would definitely say the 3 pairs of boots I recently acquired.

The high-shaft combat boots have allowed me to "rough up" some of my more conservative outfits, and take my punk aesthetic to a whole new level, especially on weekends.

The suede stiletto booties have opened up a whole realm of outfits, especially with my pants. They've basically replaced my black heels, especially since the only pair of black heels I have are slingbacks and very worn out needing to be replaced. i always feel pretty and feminine when I wear them.

The Naturalizer zip booties are wonderfully functional for when I have to leave the office in cold weather but don't want to trudge around in my actual heavy-gear boots, and extremely comfortable. I like how the block heel and rounded toe convey a sense of purpose (at least in my mind).

Prior to this I had 0 as in ZERO boots, and always felt like - especially in fall and winter - there were huge gaps in my wardrobe. When I have the brown riding boots (Hubz is taking me shopping for my birthday) in a couple weeks, I think I will feel quite complete with my boot selection. I supposed I could use a high shaft black dress boot too, but I don't feel it's absolutely necessary right now.

My boots! I wear them for most of the year. I have tall and ankle boots, and they serve different purposes, so I can't just pick one pair. I always get compliments on my boots, too. My favorite brands at the moment are Cobb Hill and Sofft, though I have to give a shout out to Softspots. I had a pair of tall Softspots boots that lasted me 6 years. I wore those boots a lot, so that's really saying something.

Ankle booties in simple sleek style but a couple of dark neutral colors, with the slimmest shaft, to work with wider or slimmer hem widths. Some flats that reliably look okay with pencil skirts, even though that's supposed to be taboo! VC slipper loafer with a slight heel works with skirts and dresses that other real flats will not, so give adequate comfort.

Is this where I get to bang on about my abiding love of brothel creepers again? So comfortable, so practical and oh so edgy. I am very close to pulling the trigger on a pair of the George Cox originals, upgrading a worn-out pair by Underground. And, you can prise my Margiela flatform booties from my cold, dead feet.

Colorful and neutral sneakers and black ankle boots in a more streamlined, dressy (chelsea) variety as well as casual docs. I could dress exclusively for about 75% of my life with 4 pairs -- it is high summer, non-work, and special occasions (plus my own fussy feet that like variety) that truly call for more.

Reading this thread has been very enlightening, as I realize I'm in dire need of finding a good pair of (preferably pointy toe) neutral flats for when summer comes along. Sounds like a versatile item which I currently don't have!

As for my shoes... as I'm in a winter mode, for Fall/Winter:

1. Brown equestrian boots with the tiniest heel. Go with pants, dresses, skirts; can be dressed up or down; always look classy; can be made warmer with shearling insoles; are so comfy. I just can't wear them in wet snow/slush.

2. Black suede short booties (these: http://www.dsw.com/shoe/crown+.....dId=274987 ), which I wear with bootcuts, skirts and dresses. Could potentially wear with skinnies (I like the look on others, not on me).

My versatile shoes would have to be black pointy or round toed flats all season long; my booties for Fall and Winter (I'm sure you've seen me wear them to death). They are so easy to slip on, no laces to fuss with, etc.

Well, my most versatile, useful shoes are not the same as my favourite shoes, which are the ones you'd have to prise from my cold dead hands!

My absolute favourites are the black mid-calf steampunk boots with burgundy buttons, but they are in no way the most versatile. I like them best with skirts, and in particular with straight skirts, and I sure don't wear those every day!

My most useful shoes are probably all three pairs of my ankle booties. I have a red pair, a dove grey pair, and now a new black pair. Each pair has a 2.5" stacked heel. They go with just about everything I own, they are all supremely comfortable and walkable, and I wear them all the time.

Second would be my Converse Chuck Taylors. They are my fast fallback 'easy' shoe.

It would depend on the season - black booties still get more wear than my other colors in f/w and tan wedge sandals in spring/summer. But if it were truly revolutionaries taking claim and I could only keep one pair, it would be my leather sneakers because they keep my feet warm enough but I can still run!

I'll join the bootie crowd. They keep my feet warm and the bit of height seems to work with ankle pants as well as longer ones. I especially get compliments on my SE Python Pettys. For hot weather flats with ankle straps seemed to make anything I wore with them look more current yet they were still comfortable. I especially like the d'orsay style that shows more foot.

I could never narrow it down to one pair of shoes, but if I want to pick a "most indispensable" for each seasonal shift, here are my must-haves:

1. winter: the Ugg Cortonas. They convert from very simple Chelsea boots to tall boots with the addition of the spats. Super comfortable and warm and versatile.

2. summer: the LD Tuttle Freeze sandals. These were a game-changer for my summer style. I balked at the price for sandals, but they were well worth it for quality and style. I wanted something to edge up simple summer outfits, and these are it. Comfortable and versatile, and they work with dresses, capris, shorts, rolled jeans/pants...

3. fall or spring, but also into summer and into not-too-cold winter days with socks: Jeffrey Campbell woven Everly booties. I bought these on a whim and then wondered what on earth I wore before I got them. Again, comfort and versatility make these workhorses -- I can wear them with jeans, skirts, even shorts.

I definitely have a desire for distinctive footwear, so I'm willing to pay a bit more to get something that you don't see EVERYONE wearing. I'm reaching for heels above 3" less and less these days, and all of these fall into the category of easily walkable shoes for me. I also wear a fair amount of black, so it's easy for me to default to black shoes. I would actually love to get a new dark grey/gunmetal metallic pair of booties -- I used to wear the sparkly Rag & Bone Newburys a lot, but now they're feeling too high for all-day wear, and I mostly reserve them for short wears or an evening out.

My most recent shoe purchase is the blue Chloe Modern Vice booties. These tick all my boxes too, for comfort and versatility, while adding some extra style to my winter footwear:

I'm pretty much with Deborah on this. I want all my shoes.
The most essential to my style are the most comfortable pointy shoes of the season - right now my black booties and distressed grey booties, in the summer my taupe flats and my black and white pair. But I wear lots of others too!

well, like deborah, i'm not sure i could name one pair….my outfits tend to be a lot of neutrals, and i don't wear jewelry, and i'm not much for accessories of any sort, but i do tend to use my footwear as my statement pieces. right now, i couldn't live without my navy booties, and i added a 2nd pair this winter, my pointed black suede booties, and my Bean booties. as we start to transition out of winter into spring, my favorites will be my 3 pairs of pointed toe flats, 2 of which have metal toe caps which really wake up an outfit.

For winter is my black S'Oliver vegan ankle booties, with light stiches around toes, and stacked block heels in tan(which softens up the black a lot), a black suede leather block heeled (and a bit of RATE platform sole) pump for spring, and a small wedge, wider ankle strap with golden hardware navy sandals for summer last year.

A pair of red booties my DH bought me several years ago. They're still "just current enough" and they add a lovely pop of color to my winter outfits.

My black strappy Danskos in the summer. They give me about 3 inches of extra height and make everything look a bit more dressy. They are so comfy I have literally worn them all over the world.

My Chinese Laundry d'orsay flats. Pointy toe, full coverage of the toes. They dress everything up. For the longest time I relied on patent heels to do this, but these flats allow you to hike fast and far for lunch, which people are so into now.
