Such great suggestions Fabbers! I think I need all these shoes! I didn't mean to say I would only be taking 1 pair of shoes. I have never made it on a trip w/o packing at least 5 pairs of shoes! I just really need one pair of comfy but stylish walking sandals......or maybe 2..smiles :)
Suz - I walk miles and miles, like you, on a city vacation. Would you do 8 miles in the Bernia's?
BethL - Love your suggestions. I do have foot pain if I don't wear comfy shoes.
Running out the door. More later. Thanks so much!

I agree with the suggestions so far. Definitely bring more than one pair, and more than one TYPE of shoe. Even though it was very hot last year when I was in NYC for the All-Star game, I wore my rose gold Sperry topsiders because we had a lot of walking and a very casual agenda. The newer slip-on sneaker styles are a trendier variation on that idea. If I were going today, I'd probably take the snake print Via Spiga slip-on sneakers, and one of the sandals in the photo below, either my small wedge Restricted sandals or my newer Donald Pliner sandals, which have really nice cushioning in the footbed.

I've been lucky enough to have had two trips to the city this summer, plus I'm originally from the NY metro area. I also have some foot issues. I'm going to second everything Suz and Viva said. It is so worth it to have more than one type of shoe with you.

Some thoughts of my own: if you're a Dansko girl, you might want to think about having a pair of them as one of your choices, or a good pair of sneakers, even though they are a bit warm. If your feet start giving you trouble, it's really nice to have a pair of shoes you know you can count on, so that you can continue to enjoy your trip. All kinds of people wear sneakers in the city, not just tourists. It all depends on how you wear them. Angie's done a few posts on Sneaker Chic, if that helps.

I also have the Sofft Bernia gladiators that Suz mentioned. They're not quite enough support for me to walk around too far, but they're quite comfortable. If you don't have foot issues, I recommend them, too. I have shoes similar to the VC cage sandals - they're the Munro Abby, and they're currently on sale at NAS. Super comfortable.

I hope you have a great time! It's such a fun place to explore.

ETA: I added a couple of finds I have that also work for me.

Now here we come to the mysteries of what works for different people -- I tried the Trinas on twice and found them excruciatingly uncomfortable and unsupportive. And I have yet to find a slip on sneaker style that wouldn't give me hideous heel blisters. Meanwhile, I'm absolutely certain that some people would look at that cage sandal I recommended and think: WHAT? Is she NUTS?? Look at that HEEL?

SE Trinas might be a good choice for a versatile sandal. I love mine and find them supremely comfortable, and I've worn them with shorts, jeans, and dresses. I'd bring a slip-on sneaker for rainy days and a heeled sandal/shoe (Okala or VC Cage) for evening too.

My suggestions, for what they are worth:

Bring at LEAST one sandal and one closed toe shoe. If it rains you are not going to want to be walking around in sandals. If it is blistering hot, you are not going to be without sandals, at least part of the time.

I always bring more shoes than I think will be necessary. Yes, they take up luggage room. Yes, it's worth it. A change can be as good as a rest. (Keep in mind that I am a serious walker. When visiting NYC, I typically walk at least 8 miles per day.)

Go for the type of shoe that is comfortable to you -- preferably one you've already walked in a lot. You don't want nasty surprises.

For summer, I always bring one pair of casual sandals and one dressier sandal or shoe, plus at least one more closed shoe that I can walk in. Wedge sandals can work well (if you find a comfortable pair that meet your fashion requirements.)

If I were going to NYC tomorrow, I'd pack my Sofft Bernia gladiators, my Cons Hi-Ness, my Okalas (for going out to dinner or theatre -- I can walk in these for a couple of miles but they are not all day shoes). And I'd also bring my VC cage sandals, which despite their heel are surprisingly comfortable.

I do lots of summer city walking and usually look for sandals that are flat, but with a padded footbed and some support, so I don't feel like I'm just walking on cardboard. Soft leather so nothing rubs weirdly is also really important to me.

I've had good luck with Clarks sandals and currently have the first pair I've collected, although they're on their last legs. Clarks usually has a good range of cute, versatile flat styles. I also had these Eccos a few years ago and they were really comfortable and held up well.

I haven't had issues with sandals in the city, even when I've been to NY, but maybe I just don't look down enough to see things I don't want to know I've stepped in!

Jeanie, @MLR is correct. We wear anything and everything in NY from 5 inch heels to ballet flats. The key is going to be comfort. New York is known as the concrete jungle for a good reason. The streets are hard on your feet and dangerous to your shoes. I've cuffed up many a pair in my 30+ years but, I can not remember the last time anyone stepped on my feet. It is crowded but NY'ers are good about maintaining a distance for personal space. Here are some ideas. Hope you like! My best suggestion would be a shoe with a closed back or at least ankle straps for support, flat gladiator sandals, or pointy (or not) flats work too. I would never recommend a backless slip-on shoe cause you might have to run to catch a train or taxi and those could come off easily. Good luck!

No specific styles to recommend as I find that people wear anything and everything in NYC. That said, consider wearing the most comfortable sandals/shoes that you can find. The city sidewalks are tough on the feet.

Personally, I tend to avoid sandals in the city because they can put your toes in peril on crowded streets. (Also, not every New Yorker cleans up after his or her dog -- enough said?) I just feel in New York that I want my feet a little bit protected, even when it's hot.

What about something like this: https://www.jcrew.com/womens_c...../A1238.jsp

I'm curious to hear too. I wonder if the shiny PVC Birkies in black white or silver would be good. It rains a lot, even in Summer so something that can get wet.

I get to accompany DH to New York City in August. I am beyond excited! It will be my first time there. What shoes do you all wear for serious city walking in the summer? I think I have worn out my trusty Danskos. My feet get way too hot in tennis shoes so I am thinking sandals. I need a something to go with everything type shoe and I probably need a strap around my ankle to hold them on. Thoughts?
