If you all lived in the mountains of California like I do you might love destructed denim and Birks!

Lately I've been feeling out of touch with the main push of YLF fashion, and I realized it's all about different environments. Do y'all have more dirt roads than paved? More animal and insects than people? I didn't think so. I believe my environment determines a lot of my RATE style aspect.

(Actually I have stopped acquiring destructed denim, was more into it 1-2 years ago. I still wear it but I am starting to purge my destroyed denim capsule. I like to get in and out early, if possible.)

The trend I'm sitting out is flat shoes. Loafers, D'Orsays, sneakers, flat sandals. Flat shoes hurt my feet. I like oxfords, they tend to have at least a bit of a heel and the lace-up aspect works for my high insteps. I think D'Orsays and slip on sneakers in particular are so chic, but they fall off my narrow heels.

The other trend I've had trouble with is crew necklines. I love the way they look on models and many forum members (and Angie of course) but they are not flattering on my short torso, short neck and small head. A scoop, v or bateau neck work best on me.

I have one pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and I adore them. I'm cutting myself off from more distressed denim, though, because they're in the sweet spot of destruction, and I have a feeling they'll fall apart at about the same time as they go out of fashion. Same to my one high-low hem tank top. I bought it last summer and I'm just glad it's not horribly dated this year.

I'm saying no to shiny track pants and birkinstocks.

I wish I could pull off slip dresses and peplum, but they both look terrible on me.

I'm not seeing many if any trends in my rural area (okay distressed denim and unintentional mom jeans are here ;-)) - but personally I guess I'm skipping these:

Birkenstocks

Jumpsuits

Seasonally confused looks

Harem pants

Mom jeans

Pajama jeans

True maxis

Mules

Overalls

Crop tops

D'orsays (love them but no reason to wear them here)

Silky track pants (love the idea, but again not practical for my life)

Florals

Not that I have all other trends, but I would consider many of them, whereas the above I don't think I'll truly consider.

I am embracing lots of the trends this season, some which are quite surprising for me, such as Sporty Luxe, but they work well for my casual lifestyle.

I am still skipping lots of trends, some of which are :

Birkenstocks

Jumpsuits

Seasonally confused looks

Distressed denim

Harem pants

Mom jeans

It's interesting seeing what everyone's sitting out! And I would agree with whomever pointed out that it seems to be body-type driven.

I am sitting out on a fair number of trends, simply because I'm on the minimalist side of the wardrobe equation and much of my stuff has to do double-triple duty on occasions, so I don't want to limit myself to things that are super-casual or super-formal. There are also several things I want, but haven't yet found a style to suit me.

Peplum tops --I liked them, but struggled to fit them in my life

D'orsay flats --don't stay on my feet, and my feet don't like flats anymore.

Distressed denim --I'm hard enough on my clothes as it is. I don't need anyone to distress my denim for me.

Peeptoe booties -- It rains too much in scotland for these, and I'm not teetering down these eroded streets in delicate heels.

High-waist jeans -- these meet my boobs. Not cute.

I'm also still on the hunt for...
Loafers
Birks
printed tee

And am completely embracing..

Boyfriend jeans --where have you been all my life???

Floral

Cropped tops ---over something longer. I don't like drafts

Sporty luxe -- I need things more hard-wearing than luxe.

Fluid

Boxy--this was a surprise, as I usually don't suit it. But I've found a couple pieces to work. Boxy in moderation?

I wish I could respond to everyone...but this thread has grown exponentially! :)

It's been interesting seeing what people like and dislike for themselves. I've been very surprised that so many of us are sitting out the destructed denim trend, because at least when I shop online I see lots, lots, lots of distressed denim! The same goes for Birkenstocks. I see them a lot on retailer websites, but many fabbers are not wearing them. I also know that maxis are supposed to be in, but when I was trying to sell some stuff for consignment last week, a maxi skirt that I had was turned down for no other reason than that "long skirts just don't sell."

It's nice that even those of us who are sitting out most of the trends can still find plenty of things that we like to still keep us happy.

I'm pretty open to most trends (I'm a big yay on many of the nays mentioned!). The only two I'm really sitting out are Birks and Maxis. Now I don't have all the trends in my wardrobe or anything, but I'm not necessarily purposefully siting them out like those two.

(I don't really have any sportiness in my style, and often listed that as an anti-style, but I have found ways to incorporate sporty-luxe that feel perfectly suited to me. The whole look doesn't have to be that, it could just be an element here or there.)

I have embraced all trends but high/low skirts. A little too Toulouse-y ( can-can girl) for me. Mental block I guess. I can see how they would be useful to showcase cool shoes but haven't bitten yet. I did pin a dress Janet discovered so maybe there is hope for me yet?

In general I like most of this summer's trends.

But I'm not doing boyfriend or cropped jeans. I've tried both and just can't make them work - they make me look a couple of sizes bigger and I'm pretty focused on trying to dress to enhance my shape. I like pants that are cropped to my ankle, but don't like them to go any higher than that on me. In the early 2000s I wore capri pants to death and am so, so done with anything that resembles them.

Other trends that I don't care for (on me only) are gladiator sandals and over-exaggerated harem pants. Also, I thought I'd be wearing my birks more than I am. They're pretty much remaining my gardening shoe, which surprises me. But I wore them to death in the 90s, so maybe I associate them with another time in my life?

Well, I'm super trendy, but I'm passing on motos, boyfriends, and distressed jeans... so far. I'd include maxis, but I have two from years past that I like; however, I really don't believe in wearing them on the street. To me they are for At Home Visiting.

I'd love to do the matching crop top / skirt thing, but I have issues with drafts. It's weird, because a cutout dress I'm better than fine with.

Let's see, I've passed on: Boyfriend jeans, destroyed denim, harem or crossover pants, jumpsuits, overalls, sweatshirt pants, maxi anything, extreme high-low tops/skirts/dresses, very short crop tops, peplums, pattern mixing, oversize fits, athletic sneakers as fashion, ankle booties with skirts or dresses, Birks, loafers, neons, pastels... I guess we like what we like and that makes it fun seeing others' rock looks we wouldn't consider.

I think it would be easier for me to say which trends I like, rather than the ones I'm sitting out! The sport luxe thing is just not my cup of tea at all, except maybe the bomber jackets in interesting materials. So far I haven't found one that I like but I've been keeping an eye out. I have a major poison eye for peeptoe booties, too. Footwear in general has been frustrating me for a few years now. Everything seems either too high or too flat.

I don't know if this is a trend, exactly, or just something that manufacturers are doing, but lately it seems very difficult to find basic t-shirts or tank tops that are not round or crew neck. I find this type of neckline unflattering and uncomfortable, so it's quite annoying that it seems to be so common.

White pants. Not that I don't like the look, but anything cool enough for the humid 90s is see- through and anything not see-through is too hot for the humid 90s. No way to win here.

And maxi dresses. I love them on teens and 20 somethings but think they look ridiculous on someone my age (54) unless she's at the beach.

Birks, pastels, and harem pants here too. I'd so jump on the sneakers bandwagon if I could get those beautiful Ash you guys sport; all the shoe trends were wrong for my flat and fussy feet and I couldn't find a jumpsuit that didn't make me want to start screaming at the mirror. I will remember this season fondly though: I adore oversize fit, drapey tops and boyfriend jeans!

There's only a few trends for me that I will definitely not be partaking in.
--white pants - too messy, and I have poison eye for certain seams showing through.
--big white sneakers - major poison eye
--d'orsays - won't stay on feet, and my feet look really ugly (pancakey) in them
--loafers - don't stay on feet, too classic for me.

--ETA: And no highwaisted pants for me either.

(and probably not peeptoe booties, because peeptoes are not comfortable and they seem like they would be too hot or too cold most of the time. However, I spent a long time last weekend looking at these peeptoe wedge Pumas on Zappos. They're like a cross between a bootie, a sandal, and a sneaker. Probably do not need them, but I am oddly attracted to them.)

No destructed denim for me, either, although I admire the look on others.
Jumpsuits have caught my eye, but I haven't worked up the nerve to try.
Croptops--would never wear in public, but bought one to wear at home on
stifling days and love it. So does DH.
I would wear Birks if they had enough support for my fussy feet.

Caro, I'm wearing the heck out of my black and white Ash Genial wedges when weather/circumstances allow. My older Ash wedge sneakers seem more fall/winter appropriate (dark green suede), and I do plan on wearing them when the weather cools off again. I like wedge sneakers but I'm not sure how much longer they'll be on trend, so I'm going to wear them while they're hot!

I'm sitting out a lot that others are too. Interesting that there is some consistency here? I also notice that many of my choices to sit out are body-type driven.

Birks: I've never really liked them, although I do like some of the flat sandals with simple cross straps that are Birks-inspired, but I have low-volume feet. They do not work for me.

Crop tops: I'm 50. Thin on top, but 50. Even a sliver of midriff is a sliver too much. I wear a bikini on the beach but off the beach I cover up. I will wear a cropped sweater over a longer top, but that is it.

Harem / dropped crotch pants: Too boho / RATE. I do like to lean RATE but in the context of tomboy, so I need some structure/tailoring to feel like myself. The JCrew Curator pants are kind of the perfect stand-in. They are slouchy "suit pants" that have a bit of dropped crotch but not a bit of boho.

Dorsay / Mules / Slides: Fall off my feet.

Jumpsuits: Don't suit my style.

Flared Midi skirts: They usually require a waist, and I am thick in the middle and short waisted, so these skirts (and fit-and-flare dresses) are out. My VC tube skirt is the only skirt I am wearing these days.

Wedge sneakers: Cute on others, but too obviously trendy for me. I'm not entirely sure what I mean by that, but when I have tried them on I just feel very obvious in them. I definitely won't be going there.

I am really enjoying some of the trends right now, many things I have had in my closet for over ten years are finally getting the love they deserve! These include lace tops, translucent tops, crop tops, and the whole boho thing.

Things I am definitely sitting out are boyfriend jeans, high waisted jeans, horrible acid wash jeans (these are all traumatic high school fashion memories)... also I think sandal boots are super ugly, and will likely go out of style soon, so I can't see spending the money.

On the fence about wedge trainers.... anyone else?

Those I'm sitting out are legion, but include:

Birkenstocks (poison eye plus bad fit for my feet)

D'Orsay flats (true flats hurt my feet and D'Orsays won't stay on)

Peeptoe booties (love the look but impractical)

Crop tops (would try a cropped sweater to wear over a shirt, however).

Maxi dresses (not my thing)

Jumpsuits (fun look but too impractical for me)

Seasonally confused looks in general (my biggest poison eye...I am a practical girl at heart)

Trends I've adopted:

Sporty luxe

Ankle strap shoes

Pointy toed shoes

Cage sandals

Lots of white

Fluid fit, fluid fit, fluid fit!!

Oversized fit for some items

Boyfriend jeans

Semi-tuck (and how!)

Tube skirts (and how again!)

Rolled jeans

Fashion sneakers

Trends I'd like to try, but haven't been able to embrace due to inability to find a flattering or workable version:

Bomber jackets (like them on others but haven't seen one I like on myself -- too unstructured, maybe?)

Loafers/ smoking slippers. (Great for my style but nearly impossible to fit on me.)

Moto jacket

Vest (would really love one of these, but so far, no luck)

Silky track pants (tried one pair and loved but they would not get worn in my climate enough)

Trends I've surprised myself by embracing:

A shot of neon (usually too strong for me, but I found a few that work, at least in summer)

Sneakers with dresses and skirts

Photographic scenic tee

Great question!! It made me think. I see that I have become quite a follower of trends, even though the backbone of my wardrobe is really modern classic -- jeans, tailored jackets, button up shirts, turtlenecks, and knit tops.
