I also have beautiful Danish designed armchairs. This quality was the norm some decades back, now they are way out of budget and reach of average folks. Finding designer furniture is harder these days, as more people are looking at the second hand market. I picked up my chairs at a flea market for less than 20 bucks. Crazy! Pic for illustration.

Fun! Aside from clothes and accessories (love finding furs, leather, pearls and stones). Mid-century Norwegian made teak furniture, Norwegian made porcelain (complete sets) and heavy crystal whiskey glassware. Pics from online, but I have these exact items

I'm going on Friday to hopefully buy a bunch of silverplate. I've got a connection with a guy who's trying to sell off the hoard of a man who owned a gold and silver exchange. There's literally piles of silverplate (think teapots, candelabra, platters, etc) that will eventually be sold for melt. I love nice silver, and I'm hoping to find some unusual stuff for friends as well.

what great responses!

@Kari - I don't use my local Buy Nothing group, but what great finds you've gotten! And I never would have thought of perfume.

@Jaileen - I use the library too - I love to read, but don't like to collect books. Though I sometimes find gems in my Little Free Library...

Glassware is a great idea! We are always breaking wineglasses so I don't know why i didn't think of this.

Hats and gloves are a constant purchase for us too - especially the way the kids go through them. Always surprised by how I can find them in like-new condition for just a few dollars!

Books, jewelry. Not at thrift shops usually, but I’m taking your question to include secondhand. Purses.

I’ve acquired a plethora of things from my local Buy Nothing Project group including:
- Coffee table
- Cast iron teapot
- Icicle garland for Christmas tree
- Cuttings to start new plants
- Kids’ toys repurposed as dog tricks/agility equipment (collapsible tunnel, hula hoop, skateboard)

I don't "love" shopping for anything and especially at thrift stores. I really try not to buy more stuff in general. I probably should buy at thrift stores for things like crockery, mugs and glasses as we break a lot of them, but they are so cheap at retail there isn't much incentive. Thinking about it, I want a new casserole dish, I should have a look there.

I do buy second hand books but because I have a niche collecting interest I don't find what I want at thrift stores generally, but at second hand book sales. The sort of things that are at thrift stores I can just get at the library (plus we have about 8 bookcases in our house - I'm really picky about adding more books!)

Books! At our Goodwill, paperbacks are 50 cents; hardcovers $1. Sometimes they’re on sale from those prices. I’ve also scored art and home decor tchotchkes at Goodwill.

I don’t know if it counts as thrifting, but I’ve bought some wonderful furniture at estate sales. My best purchase ever was a gorgeous mahogany vintage Baker dining room table with two leaves and eight upholstered chairs, in immaculate condition, all for $200. It was the last hour of the final day of an estate sale in a high-end home, and the table had been protected under a heavy pad, and covered with things to sell during the sale, so no one noticed it. The table legs were what first caught my eye. I couldn’t believe it when I realized what I was looking at. And prices were slashed because they wanted to get rid of things. When I asked them to clear off the table and remove the pad, a couple other people started showing interest in it. It took me about five seconds to decide to buy the whole set.

I am so loving all these responses. Lots of great things to look for that I had forgotten about.

Regarding Le C...I got my first set (a big Dutch oven and a medium oven) in a serendipitous way. I was walking home from taking my kids to the park and a neighbor had LEFT THEM OUT ON THE DRIVEWAY FOR FREE. That is common practice in our neighborhood; people are always leaving things out for others to take. As soon as I realized what they were, I grabbed them! There was a couple behind me who saw them afterward and asked if I was taking both and I was like HELL YES. They were both in like new condition and I use them all the time. My best ‘thrifting’ story ever.
(Since then I’ve found a beautiful eggplant leather designer bag at the end of a driveway too!)

like Runcarla, books! i love hardcover books, and can usually pick one up for $10 or so (including shipping). i try to buy from companies that sell old library stock, so that i'm giving back at least a little.

-Books! Also, there is a used bookstore two doors down from my favourite thrift store. Before Christmas I scored two fantasy art books still in their plastic covers for less than a 10th of their original cost for the DS’s. They were the surprise hits amongst the gifts.

I buy whatever tickles my fancy. Artwork, kitchenware, Christmas decorations, handbags. Here are a few things I’ve bought.
#1 is a painting by a local artist, of a location near us.
#2 is a woodcut. Obviously I had to get it. I love telling people about it. It’s called Menage a Trois. Their eyebrows go up, and then I describe the picture, they laugh.
#3 and #4 are some of the Christmas decorations I’ve found. I also have some very old glass ornaments on the tree.
#5 is a Couroc plate. Couroc was made in Monterey, California, with various inlaid objects. We were given one for a wedding present, and since then I’ve kind of collected them. I have some bowls, plates and trays of varying sizes, and I do use them. The company went out of business years ago.
#6-#8 are a few Coach bags I’ve found. If you’ve seen any of my WIWs, you might have noticed my bags. I usually include them in my pictures. Often the bags are dirty, so I wash them, and condition them. And then good as new.
