Excellent examples showing such diverse styles and silhouettes, Jonesy. Is there a "Slouchy-style" gold statuette in the house? You deserve the award.

I tend to think of them as loose drapey and either lowslung on the hips or when belted paper bag style as having some drape in the hip and/or crotch area....if that makes sense to anyone.

To me, it means that they slouch (i.e. have excess fabric and drape) in the hips and thighs. They can also be slouchy elsewhere, like at the waist or lower legs, but to my eye they're not slouchy pants unless the hip and thigh region are slouchy.

This reminds me of last weekend, when I said to my fiance, "Oh, I'm going to wear my slouchy clams today" and he expressed skepticism that they were indeed slouchy when I showed them to him (he said they were just "relaxed fit pleated pants"). Not quite sure what he thinks is slouchy ... I think he had something like sloppy sweatpants in mind and was relieved that mine were nothing like that! Of course one must keep in mind that this is coming from a man who only owns three types of pants - pleated khaki Dockers, relaxed fit Levis, and suit pants.

I'd say looseness or bagginess through the thighs and sometimes hips and calves. I usually see slouchy pants in drapey material like silk or rayon or viscose, but they can also be wool or other stiffer materials like cotton. They frequently have pleats or gathers around the waist, but they don't have to.

Some examples, below. 1-3, 3.1 Phillip Lim; 4-5, Narciso Rodriguez; 6, street shot from stylesightings.com; 7-9, compilations of runway and celeb pics; 10-15, from zara.com; the rest from stylesightings.com, illustrating some different materials (leather, plaid, cotton).

Good question, Mander, and even though it's been explained in so many ways by several people, I'm still a bit clueless and need a Slouchy Silhouette 101 tutorial complete with an artist rendering (citygirldc?) to help educate me.

To me slouchy means having lots of ease and a lot of drape - so slouchy trousers might not have taperered legs - they might be palazzo pants with very full legs in a drapey, foldy fabric. Or they could be well worn eans that are oversized in the waist and thighs and so ride lower - i.e. slouchy. That's just how I use the word - will be interested to see what others say!

I was looking at Shannon's nifty outfit and realized that I don't actually understand what "slouchy" is. Is it just the pleats and the tapered legs?
