Maya, you can find halter bras - so they're not strapless, just the strap wraps around your neck and follows the line of the halter top. If you do try it, I recommend trying it with a specific halter top since you want the bra line to be in sync with the top line. Things I've given up on:

- Heels above 2" (I have one exception at 2.5" - the Franco Sarto booties)
- Non A-line skirts
- Sweater dresses
- Many knits that are too clingy on the belly and not ruched

Add to my list:

- any tops or coats that have epaulets on the shoulders. NOT a good look for me.

- turtlenecks. I have several, and I will still keep them around for occasional wear, but I just look bad in them. My neck is too short and I get that "uniboob" look too. I look much better - and I'm just as warm - with an open neck style with a scarf tied around my neck.

- strapless tops or dresses

Okay.... in general, I'm of the mind that nearly any style can work on my figure ... if the fit is exactly right. But this may mean extensive tailoring.

That's because my figure is not quite hourglass, not quite inverted triangle, and while I'm only 5'0 (my biggest fit challenge), I'm evenly proportioned vertically. Plus I'm only a B cup.

So that means *theoretically* there are very few styles I can't somehow wear - provided the fit is perfect. Even strapless and turtlenecks might work, if the tailoring and fit was just so.

Epaulets might even work if they were exactly the right scale... not saying it would be my ideal look, but it could be passable.

Of course.. ideal look ... that's a different matter!

I don't know about halters being good for busty women, but I've always heard they are supposed to be good for broad-shouldered (strong shoulder line) women. Something about the halter creating the illusion of narrower shoulders? Certainly better look than spaghetti straps.

However, I have never had much luck with halter tops.

I think for me the issue is more about fit than style though - even in a petite size, I am shortest from shoulder to top of bra band, which is right where it counts most for a halter top to fit correctly!

I do have a halter-style bathing suit and since I can tie it tight as i want around my neck, it seems to work okay - and by tying it really tight, it does lift the "girls" and give adequate support. (At least, as much support as I'm going to get in a bathing suit!). However, I'm not really happy with how it looks from the rear view: probably my worst feature is my upper back. Luckily, I can easily ignore that part of my body. :-)

But in general halter tops are a style I tend to steer clear of... because 99% of the time, they don't work.

As for shoes - I have most definetly given up on thongs!!! I can't wear them without excrutiating pain on my one foot. Culprit, as far as I can tell: my toe on one foot turns in too far. Theoretically, a thong should be good for this (would force the toe back into proper position). But, it just hurts too much. So I give up!

I also gave up a long time ago on heels higher than 2 inches. Not good for your back, highly uncomfortable, and I walk funny in them.

And I've given up on khaki slacks ... but that's probably a GOOD thing, style wise.

Shoes are a big one Anne. Our feet just weren't meant to be slanted at a 45 degree angle though, so my feeling is that even if a certain type of shoe is comfortable, it probably isn't marvelous for your feet. Some people are lucky enough to have sturdy feet that can take a bit of abuse, but it often comes at a cost. One of my friends who has worn 3 inch or higher heels since I first met her at 16 years old has the most ghastly feet I've ever seen. Crooked toes, little cuts and marks all over the skin. It's awful. But she still wears heels. I just wonder how much longer she'll be able to do that.

As for halters, I can't wear a strapless bra, so that's why I don't understand how busty women can wear them. This is one of those styles that I think contributes to the woeful misconception that bras aren't always necessary.

I think a certain type of halter top looks better on a bustier women. The sort I am thinking of is the 50's one like this.
http://www.sydneysvintagecloth.....ed=froogle
I don't know about a very big bust, but I know that it doesn't look great with an A-cup!
I borrowed a top once to wear to a cocktail party which look great on its small shouldered C or C cupped owner and did not look great on small chested strong shouldered me.

However there is another sort of halter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halterneck - the ones on the bottom line

which T & S think is good for small busts and they might be right (I haven't tried one on)

As to Maya's original questions; the main things I would like to wear and can't are shoes - so many high heels, flats and thongs I just can't get comfortable in.

It takes me such a long time to get used to new styles that there aren't many ones that I even try.

I'm always surprised to hear people say halter tops look better on a busty frame. I don't think a busty girl could pull it off. Kind of hard to wear a supportive bra with a halter. Non-busty girls can sometimes do with the built-in bra. I think an athletic frame with a nice back wears a halter best regardless of bust size.

- skinnies (with boots and longer tops)

Well I responded before the definitions for the reason you gave up was fleshed out. So I have a mixture of reasons for "giving up on" in my list (I never had a wish to wear open toe boots). I could also add some based on later responses. Marianne, I see a lot of girls with Uggs in Seattle. I just don't fancy them for regular wear. I have see girls wearing them with shorts...shorts!

I have a bit of a different issue. It's not me giving up on the looks, it's looks give up on me. I will add things to my list to try to find but I never make the time to shop. Often times, the trend passes before I've even gotten to try it. It can take that long for me to get out there and shop. I can't think of examples at the moment, but I know it's happened.

I'm thinking the pantsuit trend will be one of those. I don't think we've had a thread on pantsuits. They're kind of fringe right now but I think they're going to be big. And I forsee that I'll have an impossible time finding one.

Angie's point about the price is very valid. For example, speaking of trapeze jackets, I could probably find one that works for me if I tried hard enough, but I prefer nicer quality for jackets, and in my mind it was too trendy for a big investment. (I know, I know it's supposed to be classic, but I am so conservative it's still trendy).

The thing I don't like about shopping is crowds and lighting in the rooms. Anthropologie is indeed nicer, but I don't like the fragrance

- high heels (I used to wear them but then I gave up on them at some point, I'm trying to build up to high heels again little by little)

It's been a long time since I gave up on a trapeze jacket, Nicole. I stopped the search for sweater dresses too recently, though mostly just because I don't have time.

To clarify (in response to Antje and Angie), I was listening items that I wanted to work for me, but that I just can't get to work. This might be because I haven't found the right piece for me yet, or because it will just never be flattering on me. It's not always easy to tell. I'm not quite sure if trapeze jackets just look bad on me, or if I just haven't found the right one yet. I'm pretty sure there is a sweater dress out there that would be flattering for me, but I don't know where or how I'm going to find it.

Just wanted to start off by saying I'm Australian so I have to defend Uggs! Granted I don't actually own a pair right now, but I do have similar winter boots that are knitted with a reindeer print and I love them to bits. Of course they are packed up now cos its summer here. How do you guys keep your feet warm in winter if you don't wear Uggs????

Moving right along, looks that I have tried and just can't get to work on me:

- Belts - both wide and skinny
- Heels of any kind - although I am trying to remedy that
- Sandals that are not Birkenstocks (they all cut my feet apart, even plain thongs/flip-flops!)
- Stockings/tights under boots. I know this is a weird one, there's just something about it I don't like.
- Belted trenchcoat - every one I have ever tried looks horrid
- Pencil skirts - make me look like a big box
- Wrap tops. I have 3 wrap dresses that I love but never found a flattering top.
- Anything requiring ironing (haven't owned an iron for over 10 years now!) - yes I am very lazy. Weirdly enough I actually enjoyed ironing when I was younger!
- Tops/dresses with spaghetti straps - maybe my shoulders or torso is too wide but they always look nasty on me

I'm sure there are lots more but I can't think of them right now!!!

Hmmm...

I am pretty tenacious, so if I really want something but can't wear it well, then I look for something else that has the same effect. Like woven shirts--I don't have a lot of luck with them, but if I see a knit button down shirt with a collar, I'm all over it. I think it gives the same effect, with more comfort. Sometimes I can only find one thing that I think looks okay--maybe not a killer 10, but at least a 7 or 8. I am content with that one item. I find that these kinds of looks are fads anyway, and I will always have my classics to fall back on when that fad passes.

THen again, there are looks that I love on other people, but know there is no wa around it for me. Belted tops, empire waists (although I'm kind of sick of empire waists now), large round prints are a few that come to mind. I dont put any effort into trying these items, yet I don't really care or let it bother me. I prefer to focus on the things I can wear--especially things that most other people can't. Like cargo pants, jeans with flap pockets, side entry pockets. I hear a lot of you women struggle with pant fit issues, and I can't relate. But I have shirt fit issues instead.

There is a third category--items that I have no desire to wear, don't care for them in general. Bejewled anything (unless it's a formal gown and done really really well), of course Crocs, Uggs--especially worn in the summer!, anything lamé, bags with designer names all over the outside of the bag...I could go on and on. But these are not things I've given up on--these are things that I just don't like.

Ohhhhhhh - I see. I too had Angie's understanding of the question. If you mean things that aren't for my body type, or that I simply don't prefer, then that's a different list, and among others, it would include:

-- Raglan sleeved tops (makes my small shoulders even smaller)
-- Chunky knits (makes me look chunky too)
-- Wide-legged pants (I just don't prefer it on me)
-- Many types of hats (pinhead with short hair)
-- Anything yellow (makes my skin also appear yellow)

You know what I wish would come back that I loved for my body type and no longer exists? Shoulder pads. Don't make fun of me! Please! Seriously, they were sooooo helpful - I instantly looked taller and thinner. Of course, they don't need to be as quarterback-esque as they used to be. We don't need to get that crazy

Voluminous tops
Sack dresses
Loose/flowy tunics
Actually, any top or dress without a fitted, definied waist... I love this look on others, especially with skinny jeans, leggings, tights, or bare legs (if it's a dress) but I don't think I can wear it
Cropped cardigans--can't figure out how to wear them without them just flapping open and looking weird
I'm thisclose to giving up on anything that requires ironing (button-down shirts, mainly), although I'm dying for a white button-down with ruffles at the placket, like JCrew's Victoria blouse. I HATE ironing.
Empire waists--they make my bust look odd
High heels (anything above 1.5-2")
Non-leather shoes, even though I'm mostly vegan :/
Trapeze jackets
Dolman sleeves
Tops with banded bottoms--they ride up on me almost immediately

High heels come to mind as something that I finally have realized I don't need to suffer with. They aren't for me and I don't feel comfortable wearing them, example, I'd be afraid to get up from the table and go to the bathroom at a restaurant. I really thank Angie for helping me to clarify this because pre YLF I'd choose what I liked for looks not realizing that some things I need to appreciate on others and not on me.
At the age of 54 there are lot's of cutsey things that I would have worn when I was younger that I just have to cross off the list.
It looks like a lot of us are giving up on what we thought was going to be the universally flattering sweater dress. Darn it anyway.

Your differentiation makes sense, Antje. I understood the question differently. (Trust me, my list of which trends I want to, and do bypass is probably longer than anyone else’s!)

I understand the question as: you think you’d look good in the look, but can’t find the item for reasons xyz. I’ve NOT included items that:

o	Don’t work for my body type
o	Items I outright don’t fancy
o	Items that I like on others but don’t work for me

If I did include the above, we’d be on page two of this thread. So, Maya – how far along to you want us to list!

Hmm, interesting lists. I think there are differences, though, between styles you really like and wish they'd work for you, vs. styles that might be "on trend" and/or look good on others but that you have an easy time bypassing because you're not that enchanted by them anyway. Does that make sense?

E.g., for me the trapeze jacket would be an example of the first category; I love the look and have tried it repeatedly but it's just plain unflattering on me, which bums me out. Heels might fall into this, too. Not that I would like to wear them on a daily basis, but there are occasions where I do wish I'd be comfortable in heels and could pull them off for a special look.

The second category is bigger. There are a lot of looks that I might enjoy on others (or not) but that I know immediately aren't "for me" and that I might not even personally like that much. E.g., dolman sleeves are a good example of this, or boat necks, or pleated skirts. All can look real cute and all on others, but I don't even crave them for myself knowing they wouldn't work easily, and I am not bummed about it like I am about trapeze jackets or other examples of the first category.

I actually think it's not bad at all to have a longish list of looks you're bypassing. It means your understanding of your own body and style has evolved and you are more picky. Of course this assumes that you still have a solid list of looks that you like and know work for you.

Wow, those boots are something else. They are certainly unique, but not in good way!

Before joining YLF, I had given up on several looks (like skinny jeans and tunics) that I have now been able to work into my wardrobe. But I have given up on some items:

- Crew neck shirts: any type of shirt with a high neckline doesn't really look good on me

- Super high heeled shoes and some pumps: my feet are narrow and tend to slip out, so I prefer sling-backs or shoes with an ankle strap

- Shorts: I've tried on a couple of pairs of dressier shorts, but I just don't like the look on me. They look great on others, but I would rather wear a skirt or dress. I only wear shorts for work-out purposes.

- Tank tops/skimpy shirts/halter tops: I'm not in college any more so I really don't have anywhere to wear them. Also, I need enough coverage to wear a good bra.

I had a YLF-inspired dream last night I was shopping for the perfect sweater dress. Unfortunately, I didn't find one.

Interesting thread. Many of your responses REALLY surprise me. I’ll go into that more later as I tackle each of you individually. (Big bad Angie is on the way).

I’d like to throw in the budget variable. Items that you’ve given up on, might work if you could and felt comfortable paying a higher price. Unfortunately, our means do factor into this equation.

My list is short:

o	Open shoes. The most open shoe I wear is a ballet flat no matter how hot it is
o	Heels above 2 and half inches
o	Chunky knitwear

So, after crocs, Uggs are next on my list as ugliest shoe in the world. I did not expect as much solidarity.

Tarzy: I too love the Apple store. While everyone else is shopping in Soho during the great YLF meetup of 2009, I can see myself sneaking off there

Although the NYC Apple stores are "special" so maybe that's why.

I really think it's the lighting that makes me crazy. Some stores are okay, but department stores are the worst. I like the ambeince of Anthropologie. It always smells lovely in there and the music is usually kind of sweet and not bothersome. Now if I could just afford to shop there...

I have given up on:

Leggings (short chunky legs)
Flats (short legs, big hips)
Empire waist (not good with large bust)
Woven shirts (fit issues - bust, waist, sleeves (short arms), neck (short neck)
Cardigans (bust/waist issues - they pull up and I get a funny roll at the waist)
Sweater dresses (they combine the worst of all my issues!)

I am also THIS close to giving up on jeans!

(My husband is also allergic to malls, but that might be a "male" thing. He seems to do fine at the Apple store.)

Joy, when I was young and my mom would take me to Marshall Field's in Milwaukee, I dreaded walking into the store because the lights had the most horrible piercing noise, and adults couldn't seem to hear it - It was painful!
