I don't use much in the way of hair accessories, but one thing I LOVE are the hair-ties that look like little old-school telephone cords (the coily ones) - these are great because if you've styled your hair and then need to pull it back quickly for a task, they don't leave an annoying ponytail bump in your hair. Very handy!

I like hair ties instead of elastics- supposedly they cause less damage. Bobby pins are essential, and the long u shape ones are good for French twist, bun (if you can find them). Decorative combs are nice too- small for sides, big for French twist. Big barettes for clipping it all up, or a low pony. Tiny elastics for tiny braids- like around the face. Headbands for the gym.
Disclaimer- I don't own all these things ATM!

Angie, a few years ago I bought a good pair of hair cutting scissors. I use them to clean up my bangs, and now they are getting more use. They are also good for evening out DH's clipper cut. My bangs seem to need cutting every 10 days now. I did get lessons several years ago from the best hair cutting stylist I ever had. Unfortunately he retired.

Carla, great ideas. I love the model's hair. Mine is also multi-colored, but with less contrast between light and dark. This helps me a lot in ideas to experiment with. I still think of barrettes and clips as little girl items. About time I get up to date!

I wear my hair similar to picture #1 only longer. I cut my own bangs and have been doing that for years. YouTube has lots of tutorials.
I have used bobby pins and scrunchies. Sometimes I pin the sides of my hair back with bobby pins to give a half up look. This gives a look similar to pic #5 that Carla posted.

Here’s some inspo. I’m not a fan of the ditsy ornaments, but the styles would look well on any long haired woman ‘of a certain age’ IYKWIM, without looking ‘school girl.’

I have been resorting to hairbands as my shorter side grows out and is just awkward. I may end up going for a short cut in a couple of months but meanwhile, hair accessories inspo is much appreciated.

Like you I have decided to return to long hair. Our grocery store (King Soopers) has the covered hair elastics. I like the extra big hair pins to control my hair, the kind that are sometimes used to hold rollers in place. I use them to hold my fine straight hair up. I thought it would also be helpful to get a small hairpiece to make my hair seem thicker, but so far have found nothing in grey. Not a full wig but just something that blends with my hair with a comb attached to hold it in place. The. There are headbands and scarves to use as turbans.. Good luck snd please show us what you decide to use.

Second vote for Goody barrette like @Preppy Pear mentioned - it works well on fine short and mid length hair ( my daughter has a few of them in different metallics ). They are on a small side and easy to use.

I wear a plain metal Goody barrette everyday. They work well in my fine straight hair. A lot of the hinged hair clips and barrettes slide right out. I use plain old covered elastics for ponytails.

I completely forgot about bobby pins! Okay, some of this is coming back. We do have some wide, soft, bands. I haven't been to the drugstore in ages, and although DH has gone once or twice, he gets nervous if he has to buy me beauty items, so I am looking online.

I haven't had pigtails since the 1970s and that was 2 weeks in a camper truck with 2 little boys. Can a gray haired woman sport pigtails in an elegant way?

Right now I'm waiting for my delivery of toilet bowl cleaner and Johnson Paste Wax. Never thought this day would come. I'll do some online shopping.

I bought some metal clips that snap open and closed that seem to work to hold small bits of hair back. I prefer those to the bobby pin style that I have a hard time getting open and never quite sit right. I think you would look cute in a pony tail--I like the Goody brand too--they don't rip your hair out like regular rubber bands.

LOL! I’m in the same boat, MsMaven! My one barrette has seen better days, but the hair aisle in the pharmacy and grocery store have been picked clean. I really like my current stylist, but she is on maternity leave (baby due any day) and it will be a l-o-n-g time before she is back cutting hair I suspect. She has a 2 1/2 year old as well. I’ll see if one of her colleagues can give my mop some shape (when things open up) with a view to growing it long enough to put up.

I think you will want some wide, soft elastic bands for pony-tails and braids - at the bare minimum. Goody is a brand I like. Also, bobby pins if you do a French twist or bun.

My style is so RATE, I’m sure you would want a more polished look... but if it helps: my hair is incredibly fine and I use small butterfly clips to pin it up into buns or milkmaid braids.

I decided I might just as well enjoy longer hair for now. It's been years since it's been this long--now just touching top of shoulders when straight. All I have are a couple of mis-matched barrettes. I can't even find any covered rubber bands or a hair comb--I used to have several of each.

My last haircut was Feb 14. I've been unhappy with my hairdresser for some time and have some suggestions, but too lazy to change. Well, she and her BF went to Italy right after that and thought they'd be safe because they were in the south, not the coronavirus locked down north. On the flight back BF felt sick and sure enough, he got worse. I had already decided to cancel my Mar 20 appointment--but the county lockdown cancelled it for me. On the 19th BF got his test results at last--yes, he had Covid 19. He is doing much better right now and donating his plasma.

I received a text from my hairdresser yesterday--she didn't get sick, but the salon she worked at is closing for good. She expects to be back in business in July or August, but I suspect she won't--she'll try something else. She's been bored with hairdressing for a long time.

Possibly salons can open in another month--we'll see.

In the meantime, it's been so long since I've had hair long enough to pin up or put in a ponytail that I've forgotten how--and a lot has changed in the hair world since then.

I have fine, absolutely straight hair. It's getting shaggy on the ends, but not long enough for me to try and cut it myself the way I did in college.

I would love any ideas, suggestions, or product recommendations.

Mr. M bought a hair clipper set online and it arrived this weekend. Tuesday I gave him his first haircut in 3 months and we're both pleased with it. He doesn't have much hair on top, so that made it simpler. He has come home with some bad haircuts lately, so I'm proud to tell you that I did better.

Here's some mid-80s or later hair. It's almost as long mow as in #1 photo. No more perms these days.
