My cousins son summed my packing style up perfectly when I went to stay with them for a week (well 5 days!) he took 1 look in the boot of my car and said "are you really only stopping for a week or the whole summer holidays"
I like to have 1 outfit per day plus a couple of extras, plus I like to take a dressing gown and slippers and my own pillow. Then I have a tote bag for toiletries ( yes I really should get into decanting into smaller bottles but I'm a last minute packer). Then a bedside bag which acts like my bedside table at home with my ipad, hand cream, cotton gloves......... Then generally there is weather clothes, wellies waterproof coat etc. I don't think I'd ever be able to pack for a plane! X

I am a super light packer. I reached the breaking point many years ago. I'm talking rolling backpack.

My one exception is a 22" for trips involving stays with family for a week or more.

This is not to say I won't come back with one more bag than I left with. An entirely different matter.

vibgyor, I just did an 11 day trip to Germany (but without a toddler) with a small suitcase and a tote as my luggage (no laundry along the way). Part work, part sightseeing.

I took 1 pair of jeans, 2 pairs of lightweight pants, 1 knit skirt, 2 dresses, 1 knit moto jacket, enough tops for every day when I was not wearing dresses (thin t-shirts, silk t-shirts, or slik-cotton shirts that take up very little room), 1 lightweight cardigan, and a raincoat. It sounds like your capsule is quite similar, and you are well prepared for the possibility of cold weather so you should be fine.

I think it also depends on how often you travel and what are your resources as far as different types of gear and capsule wardrobes are concerned. I thought of this in February, as we were packing for a short vacation in Sedona. My mother was going with us, and she was asking me what to bring - I realized that having dedicated gear capsules (such as lightweight travel pants, fleece jackets, windbreaker etc.) really helps simplify packing. My mother has a wardrobe that is well suited to her everyday life, which involves walking, gardening, driving around a bit etc. - but it is not easy to manage light packing for an outdoor vacation with varying temperatures when your wardrobe is mostly jeans, cotton t-shirts, wool and cotton sweaters, and "city-type" jackets and parkas. I feel like I am privileged to be able to pack efficiently because I could afford to buy some lightweight travel and gear items that make it easy to layer and dress for varying weather patterns.

We recently went to Puerto Rico for a week and I realized what a horrible vacation packer I am. Read Angie's thread and I did the opposite of everything.
I was under pressure to turn around a client report that usually takes two WEEKS to do, in the two DAYS before we left for vacation, and I had traveled for work the entire week before vacation, so I literally packed in the 30 minutes before hitting the sack the night before we left (and our alarms rang at 3:30 am to leave for the airport). Capsules? Weight limit? What?
I thought I packed so well. I completely overpacked, as did one DD and DH. We paid over-limit fees for our little flight to the island of Vieques (because I had been so busy I didn't realize there were strict weight limits on the flight) and we ended up shedding stuff -- books we finished, toiletries, etc. -- in every stop just to try to ease up on our burden.
The upside? I think my arms got a great workout that week, lugging everything around.

Fun to read the replies and the wisdom of YLF members! I should add this is car (minivan) travel with several stops and events with different clothing needs to complicate matters. So of course it's so much easier to just toss in whatever we might need AND we are a family of five (my kids are older) so no matter how you slice it, it's a lotta stuff!

If it were just me and my husband, we could be more efficient. Angie brings up a good point about electronics...they are also more stuff to cart along, sometimes times 5. And the reality is that we are a very wired family and this stuff is coming with us

It does depend a lot on where we are going. We are staying with family which takes off the pressure to bring every conceivable thing and the kids get tons of presents and we do a lot of shopping. So our most important packing strategy is to bring an extra suitcase. We do tend to overpack our carry on - lots can happen on a long flight with air sickness prone kids.

Wow..great ideas here! These kind of posts are always fun, informative and interesting to read! I will be traveling to Switzerland for 10 days and with a toddler so I m picking up lots of ideas from here.Depending on the temperatures,I am planning on packing 3 bottoms, 5-6 tops ( 2 short sleeves and 4 full sleeves for layering) , scarves, a pashmina, a windbreaker jacket , a black leather moto vest and 2 pullovers! Two pairs of sneakers: the bulky one I will wear for the flight! Am I doing too much here? Any information or packing ideas will be very helpful.

DH has started to make fun of me because I tend to pack the same capsules when we visit his mom at Christmas -- so I'm in the same clothes in year after year of photos! We take the car, so I could probably pack more and take single wear items like white/light clothes and not be so obsessed with mixing and matching.

We all want to bring just the right amount of things with us, don't we? It's just achieving that that is so hard. Even if you plan and give it thought you can't anticipate everything that might happen.

I personally have been more miserable when I bought not enough / the wrong things than when I've ended up with a few extra things I didn't need or wear. I hate the feeling of being dressed inappropriately for an occasion, or having to wear an item several times without being able to launder it. And there have been several times where I've seen minimalist packing advice (not here, around the web) and thought "are you actually going to wear *that*? To *there*?"

With plane travel, unless it's only a 2-3 day trip I am not carryon only. I don't think it's a reasonable expectation unless you are literally backpacking around somewhere, in which case your clothing needs are pretty narrow. I also do have a poison eye, I have to admit, for people who bring gigantic "carry-ons" on planes and delay loading.

For car travel I bring lots of choices - sometimes a big tote bag full of only shoes! But for air travel I'm usually a carry on girl. We are heading to Europe in a few weeks and will spend 2 weeks in 3 cities, with trains and trams between them. There's no way I want to be lugging a lot of baggage on and off public transit. My plan is to wear the same outfit over and back leaving 12 days. I'll try to pack 4 bottoms, 6 or so tops, 2 pairs of shoes and a couple of scarves to change things up a bit. I also take a zippered tote bag as my "handbag" for the plane. It holds a small crossbody handbag for day to day use on the holiday as well as my makeup ( minimal), toiletries, vitamins etc. Sometimes I wish I had more options with me, but the hassle just isn't worth it.
We've had our share of lost or delayed luggage, and that's always in the back of my mind too.

I just want to pop back in to say that I don't think traveling with just a small carryon as opposed to a large checked bag makes one a "better" traveller--it's a choice, not a virtue.

My own philosophy is that, as long as your luggage isn't distracting from your enjoyment, then it is probably just fine. What bothers me more is seeing people lose the adventure and joy of travel because they are burdened down by their luggage. I know women who dread having to pack for family vacations and find it much easier to just stay home than have to deal with all the hassle. As I said, my husband and I managed to travel with two kids ages 2 and 4 throughout Scandinavia with everything we needed in two backpacks so we always had two hands free--one for grabbing a stair rail and the other for a small hand. Despite our limited wardrobes we were all nicely dressed so we could stay in a smaller, but very nice, inns and eat in good restaurants. My husband wore his tweed jacket during the day and would often slip on a tie before we went for dinner in the evening. We walked, took local buses and ferries, and were comfortable in all kinds of weather. It took some planning since we were gone for six weeks, but it was a wonderful time for all of us. Our kids loved the adventure of meeting other children in playgrounds and parks. They learned to dress for dinner, sit quietly at the table, and eat different foods. We learned that families often bond with other families while sitting in a park watching their kids play, and we were often invited into a private home for coffee or a meal. My point is that traveling with a family for several weeks, walking for hours, and dining out at restaurants with white linen tablecloths is perfectly possible with limited luggage.

Maybe our packing style is less about the size of the suitcase, but more about what we want to experience when we travel away from the comfort of our homes? People look for different things when they travel for pleasure. If you want to move away from your normal routine, then maybe trying to simplify by packing light makes sense. If the thought of being in a strange place, or in different circumstances, doesn't thrill you, then you might want the security of having your own "stuff" close at hand. We can all rationalize our packing styles, but, ultimately, I think packing has as much to do with the psychological aspect of moving away from our personal comfort zone at home as it does with laundry or fussy feet. I also think that the more a person travels, the more comfortable a person becomes with less stuff.

I grew up in an over-packing family and the ensuing traumatic memories (4 hour car trips with someone else's suitcase on my lap, etc.) have made packing efficiently a default and I aim for almost complete mix and match when going by air. Even by car I want to be able to unload it in one trip carrying everything up staircases if needed.

That said, I like to cover all bases and bring at least one fabulous and fun outfit --- sipping cocktails overlooking the sea feels different in a great dress and heels than hiking sandals and shorts, for example. Also, I can explore more places with one dressier outfit, and variety in shoes helps me blend in better.

I also bring all meds and cosmetics, but pared down to the necessary amounts. I don't feel I've over packed if everything gets worn and takes about five minutes to unpack and repack. I do feel like I have if there are clothes that aren't used at all, or bulky unnecessary things.

I try to be as minimal as possible, but I'm usually still taking too much. Still, it's been less and less over the years! I'm like my dad this way, who always took just what was necessary. My mum is always packing a lot more, although she's not as bad as her mother was who really took "everything but the kitchen sink". We always had to carry our personal stuff on our own as children, my parents never lugged around books, toys or anything else for us. My mum did help with the clothes packing until we were teenagers and most of the time it ended up with my parents sharing one bag and us children sharing one bigger one or two smaller ones besides that. When we packed our own stuff she did ask to make sure we had the important things, but that was it. For the most time we went on holiday with the car though, so there was no big need to pack very light. Our usual set up were three bags in the luggage space, everyone having their personal items bag before them and beach stuff in the car roof box.

Yes, for Scouts/Guides-type packing! Our family, like Joy's, has always gone the route that everyone is responsible for their own stuff and has to lug it around unassisted. Our trips started when our kids were toddlers, and there is nothing like backpacking overseas with two toddlers to teach a person about what is truly essential--and what can be left behind. As the boys got older, they were responsible for packing and carrying their own bags--backpacking trips in the mountains and trips overseas. They used the same packing lists that my husband and I used to make sure they had the basics they needed, but we didn't say anything when they would throw in "extras". Trudging along with a heavy backpack on a uphill trail, or trying to wedge a bulky suitcase onto a crowded bus, made them seriously consider the wisdom of taking more than they needed. At one point, one of them actually used his limited travel funds to buy a smaller bag, and donated his heavier suitcase to a shelter, just to avoid the hassle; that bag is still his bag of choice on his trips with his own family today!

Honestly, I think our kids pick up their travel/packing habits from us. Our sons grew up seeing traveling "light" as the norm. If we would have traveled with "everything but the kitchen sink" in a large van, or checked large suitcases when we traveled overseas, I'm sure that would have been their norm.

Oh, I hear you Suz. Climbing in Utah, followed by a wedding at fancy resort, ending in Vegas. All in the fall when it could be blazing hot or threatening snow. Ugh, that was hard! Your trip to Banff a while ago was a great example of how to manage varying travel situations.

"looking at the wreckage of suitcases, duffle bags, and garment bags around around me as I check in to see what's going on in the forum". Hilarious.

Packing for holidays is a huge topic around here - and strategies differ enormously. I cover exactly how I feel about it here. Not so light packing:

http://youlookfab.com/2010/03/.....t-packing/

These reasons make the carry-on thing for plane travel impossible for Greg and me:

We travel with all our laptops, iPads, cameras and lenses. That's most of our hand luggage weight and space gone.

We never do laundry when we travel.

We bring dressy clothes because we like to dress up for dinner in urban cities, so we need options. Options take up space.

We bring lots of shoe options for fussy feet.

We bring back treasures - food, stuff for the house, presents - which requires extra space on the way back.

That said, we bring capsules, pack very efficiently, and are never overweight.

Karie, you're hilarious!

It's pretty easy to be minimal if you are going for one week to 10 days to the same location -- or even three weeks to the same location, with laundry. And if your activities are all pretty casual. And if the weather at your destination is warm or temperate.

It's a lot harder if you're moving from snow to heat, from super dressy to super casual. From rural to city and back again. From one country to another to yet another.

I can do minimal for a weekend, minimal for a week to the same destination/ not much variation in activity. Where it gets hairy for me is those trips where I have multiple demands and very erratic weather conditions to plan for. Which happens to be most of my longer trips. I am not sure what I am doing wrong there, LOL. ;)

I hear you on packing woes. It's really hard when you have to pack for different or unexpected weather conditions. I always joke and say "Packing is easy for me - I just put the house in the car."

The more I travel, the more minimal I get. As for family, I learned a lot from the Boy Scouts. Each person packs and must carry their own bag if they are 10 or over. I do buy some things and ask questions, " what do you have for a rainy day? A cold night?" They have to live with their decisions. There is a learning curve but it pays off in the long run, and it helps if those first trips are long weekends, not a three week trip to India. Disclaimer: I had boys who enjoyed the challenge. They are still the most minimal packers I know and have even made it a life style. Girls may be tougher.

To be honest it all depends on my destination. I live in the UK and if I go on holiday in the UK than I'm definitely a kitchen sink packer. I need to pack for all four seasons which over here can happen in one day!

Otherwise I tend to go to Greece and this year it's going to be in August so I know it's going to be very hot, every day, so I just do a smallish capsule and keep things to a minimum. I don't even need a cardigan for the evenings as last year I never used one at all. Sandal wise I will only take two options plus a pair of cons for travelling. Day dressing will just be swimwear with a tee and shorts.

I am on the minimalist team. Our family of 4 is currently in Amsterdam (kids napping) and we brought 3 carry-ons and two small day bags for the family. Granted we are staying in an apartment with a washing machine and I do not need anything other than casual to barely dressy casual.

I find that even when I bring more I don't necessarily wear more. Something about traveling really brings out my desire for simple functional dressing. I am VERY picky about what I bring. It must fit perfectly, be of good quality, easy to care for, and pack up small. I use to use the rule that every piece must go with at least two items in my bag. That rule became 3 items. For this trip everything goes with everything. Any top, with any pant, with any sweater/jacket, with any shoe. Not for everyone for sure but I am really enjoying it on this trip.

I generally seem to pack outfits and take enough that I don't have to necessarily mix and match. If driving, I don't worry about being minimal and bring extras 'just in case.' If flying, I do try to do carryon if I have connecting flights. If it's direct, I usually prefer to check my bag and not have to bother with it. And the climate makes a huge difference- shorts and sandals take much less space than sweaters and boots.

I try to organize around a neutral "base color" or two and go from there. But I don't pack lightly! I take different shoe options (fussy feet narrow feet) and the toiletries/cosmetics I need.
I say take what you feel you need and what makes you comfortable.

You know what? When your travelling with a whole family, "travelling light" is sort of a joke, IMO. A joke or a cruel myth perpetuated to make us all feel bad about ourselves!

When I travel it is often to destinations with extremely varied weather and I'm going to be doing a wide range of activities. I do NOT manage a carry on. Big suitcase all the way. Either that or one smaller one (that still requires checking) with a carry on and tote.

I say, bring what you need to. If you're travelling by car, you may have room, so bring it. If you are travelling by plane and checking a bag anyway -- bring the size of bag you require. If you are carrying a backpack, bring the biggest version you can safely and comfortably carry. And forget the ideal!

Sitting here on vacation as my family sleeps in, and looking at the wreckage of suitcases, duffle bags, and garment bags around around me as I check in to see what's going on in the forum.

No matter how hard I try, I can never seem to pack lightly. I always want to cover so many possible weather, occasion, and clothing mishap situations so I never can bring just a few mix-and-match outfits. This vacation we have also had to deal with Hurricane Arthur, so rain gear had to be included too. I have decided I am a "kitchen sink" vacation packer. You all put me to shame with your vacation capsules and carry-on strategies

'Fess up...who else is incapable of traveling light?
