I am a small bag person. I currently switch between a small handbag and crossbody depending on where I am going and for work use a large tote bag that I can put my wallet and lunch, etc all in. I make switching easy by using a wallet-sized pouch for chapstick, Advil, reading glasses and stuff like that and then just move that and my wallet to whichever purse I am using. Works well for me. I love purses, especially beautiful leather ones and go drool over the really nice ones at Nordstrom Rack every so often. Maybe this year I will invest in one of these.

I bought my first high-quality handbag this year, and I love it! It is by Patricia Nash...I think her stuff is mostly sold at Macy's. I have a bit of a boho vibe to my style, and this bag fits it well without being too over-the-top. I like bags that are distinctive but still classic enough that they don't look out of place with an everyday outfit.

Kate Spade is pricey, but she has some really adorable pieces.

As Suz said, handbags are so personal. I like Kate Spade bags and also enjoy bags that I have bought at Target. Most of my bags are from consignment shops.

As others have said bags are very personal. My bags are from artisans and tend to be one of a kind (or only a few of a kind). I only have one designer bag and that is a Gucci bag that I found at a consignment store. I would never buy something like that new.
I do have my eye on an Italian dark brown hobo. I saw it in a lovely shoe store in Hamilton. Beautiful leather.

I love bags and find for me that I have three bags that are my workhorses - a black tote, a cognac bucket bag and a grey hobo. My black bag is the most formal and structured and the other two bags are great styles and colours that seem to work with everything (from jeans to formal work clothes). My favourite labels are Kate Spade, Rebecca Minkoff, Furla, Marc Jacobs and Longchamp - I don't think you can go wrong with any of these.

Nordstrom Rack is good for deep discounts--check online. I've also found some great bags on ebay. I like Fossil and Rebecca Minkoff a lot but have never paid full retail price. Handbags are my favorite accessory so I have a collection -- mainly satchel's and crossbody bags. Whenever possible I carry a crossbody -- but if I have to carry anything more than the most basic items I go with one of the larger bags. As Suz said, a hobo is great if you need to carry lots of stuff. Satchel's, on the other hand, are sometimes more easily organized.

Same thoughts from me: handbags are too personal and specific to know how to recommend to someone else. I'm by no means a "bag lady" because I prefer to buy the absolute best I can afford (or more than I can afford - sigh) and have just a few for each season. It's mostly hardware that differentiates the bags; colour and shape are both fairly consistent. Funny , I just realized that I am currently loyal to two brands, and I don't know if that was a conscious decision or not: Rebecca Minkoff and Marc Jacobs . I have a couple of designer bags that remain in rotation every season but not as regular every-day bags. There sure are a lot of beautiful labels and brands to choose from - have fun finding some new ones!

A place where I have had luck with good quality bags at a hefty discount is on-line at Neiman Marcus Last Call. I like many Furla bags; they seem to carry a lot of them. NMLC usually has a wide range of solid bags in the $150-$300 range. I have bought three bags from them and all arrived in perfect condition complete with dust bags.

I am a bag maximalist in that I like a variety of forms and colors to coordinate with outfits and activities. Big fan of structured satchels, medium cross bodies and clutches (mostly for evenings). I like the look and function of double strap satchels, but will add a shoulder strap when I need my hands or am walking a long way.

Good luck with your search. The right bag can impact your day in a big way.

I agree that shape is personal. I like a medium size bag that has handles and a cross-body strap. If you are looking for a good brand at a good price you might consider Kate Spade or Rebecca Minkoff. Both brands are frequently available on sale (Kate Spade has good sales when you sign up for their email, RM is frequently available on discount sites).

I tend to like a smallish tote or grab-bag style handbag, or a cross-body style. None of my handbags are oversized because I just don't carry around a lot of stuff. These are a few of mine:

I'm a one bag til it dies kind of girl, because I have no patience for swapping out bags and wallets. I used to have multiple Dooney & Bourke bags with coordinating wallets, and I got tired of the constant musical chairs. This is my current bag, from splendid. It's a beast, will hold more stuff than I need to carry + my 17 pound daschund if I wanted it to. Car keys for scale (told you, it's a beast). Seems to be well made, I'm hard on bags and it has held up to my abuse for a year with only a little dirt to show for it (I really should clean it properly soon).

Of course, a bag this big isn't for everyone, because even when I've only got wallet, shades, phone, and vape mod in it, it's not light. I was a stagehand so I have ridiculous tolerance for heavy things.

I highly recommend the brand. Like I said, a year of my abuse and it isn't looking beat up. It retails for almost $400, but I paid 1/5 of that because tjmaxx is awesome.

Handbags are so personal!! What works for one will not work for another. And sometimes we surprise ourselves with them as well. In theory, I like a structured bag the best. But this year I bought myself a very unstructured hobo (below) and it has been the best purchase of my year.

I used to be a "one bag" per main season person, but now I like a variety of bags for different purposes and outfits.

I would consider what has bugged you (and what you've loved) in past bags. Also, think about what your usual needs are. I commute on foot and need to carry a laptop quite often so I need a larger bag. For evening, I'll switch to something smaller.

I need a little inspiration. I usually buy 2 bags a year. One for winter and one for summer. I usually like to spend less than $50 simply because I know I'll be buying a new one in 6 months. However, now I think I want to try for several good quality bags that I can rotate over many years. What are your favorite designers/brands and styles? I am willing to spend $300 +/- per bag but would also be happy spending less.
