I have for the first tI've ever really tuned my uniform. I sometimes wear a dress with a blazer and flats or some kind of boot but generally I wear black skinny jeans or ponte pants, a knit top usually black or black with stripes and a blazer or leather jacket. I change my shoes but they are usually flats of some sort. I find it great not to have to think about it in the mornings now.

I love this thread and all the replies! I will be revisiting! I wish I could thumbs-up all the responses.

In the meantime I will weigh in that the important part of my uniform is predictability and structure (big boxy top or combination, over a more narrow bottom). It's a weird balance between being the authority (the "grown up") with also being entirely approachable by people at all levels, able to lug No Parking signs around when needed. (See Project Greenlight, Effie Brown for a reference. Or all our Denver YLF friends who work in museums or universities.)

Because I work in the film industry and most of the crew is in work gear including jeans, t-shirts or sweatshirts, and closed toe shoes, I dress the same, but with the intention of looking ever so slightly upscale and deliberate about the t-shirts and sweatshirts. If I'm at a meeting that's not on set, I can wear a denim pencil skirt and I can wear open toed sandals, but otherwise it's cropped pants or jeans. Even when I wear sandals, they have a lot of coverage; I love lots of beautiful leather in my shoes.

I see a dress in my Finds. It is totally a dream. I never would wear it.

My work-wear is quite varied, but my fast fall-back formula tends to be skinny pants, a self-made tee, and a long cardigan, with booties, oxfords, or arty Mary Janes. In summer, I my fall-back is more likely to be cuffed chinos with self-made tee and shorter cardigan or denim jacket, and ballet flats, cutout booties, or sandals.
On days when I put more thought into what I'm wearing, I will wear harem pants or other flowy pant styles. They take more thought to get the proportions right, though, in my experience. Skirts are a struggle, but I do like to wear them when I can figure out how. Dresses are easy, but I'm self-conscious about baring my legs until we get about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through summer and I just don't care anymore!

I am in the process of re-developing a work uniform; currently I am volunteering in a kindergarten classroom and try to model after the teacher in terms of clothing. Pretty much I've been going for skinny cropped black pants, either flat boots or pointy toe flats, and a fine-knit top or, today, a chambray shirt. I've also been playing with statement necklaces, which the kids seem to find interesting (although not as interesting as my volunteer badge ha!).

My office dress code is casual but as a senior manager I prefer to dress up more. I do enjoy having the option to wear jeans if I want to, though I avoid styles that are overly casual and I always try to keep the overall look polished.

Most days an outfit consists of pants (slim leg and full length) and top, with interesting (I hope!) shoes and bag. Today for example is a floral print blouse with flare jeans and red pumps. If I wear a skirt, it's a slim style, usually with a longish top. I also really like dresses for summer as they are easy and breezy and I have 4 or 5 that I will wear regularly.

I dress similarly year round; it's more the colors and fabrics that change seasonally. So I will swap out a sweater and boots for a blouse in a light color and sandals/open shoes.

My work dress code changed from business casual to casual about 5 months ago so I'm still figuring out what my "uniform" really is. So far I am loving wearing my jeans; blue, black, white, cream but nothing distressed or faded (just my personal rule). So far I haven't worn just a Tshirt unless I'm pairing it with a jacket or cardigan. I also wear a lot of button ups and sweaters. I also still wear ponte pants a lot and this summer will wear some more skirts and maybe dresses. So I'm casual but still error on the business casual side. I'm in a very traditional industry in a professional position so I've yet to go too much outside the box (like harem pants).

I don't really have a uniform, nor do I want one. I like lots of variety and tend to dress up more than I have to. I play in my closet on the weekend and put together several outfits to choose from over the coming week. This time of year I wear a lot of long sleeve collared shirts and blouses with skirts or skinny pants, 3/4 or long sleeved dresses, leather or moto style jackets, pumps, oxfords, loafers, and pointy toe flats. Jeans on casual Fridays but nothing distressed and still dressed up with a nice top, jacket, and shoes. I've always been a jewelry girl so whatever compliments the outfit best - sometimes statement jewelry, sometimes minimal.

Once it gets hot, I'll wear skirts with short sleeved blouses or sleeveless dresses - both with a jacket or cardigan to guard against the frigid a/c.
I don't do jeans on Fridays in the summer (too hot) but I have some denim skirts and dresses or will just be dressy on Friday instead of casual. Sandals or open toed pumps for footwear. I rarely wear pants between May and September (shorts on weekends) but once in a while I'll wear a lightweight pair of silk pants with a drapey blouse.

For winter, it's chunky knits, and jeans. Would love to add a dressy warm boot to the mix.

For summer, it is ankle pants, heels and structured bag.

This was good food for thought - I read this last night before heading to bed wanting to contemplate is some more. I've just started a new job (yesterday) and made a vow to myself to up my work wear game. So a summer uniform? Not yet, and I sure as heck would like to find one. I'm going to need some new clothes as soon as the budget allows, and this will be top of mind. I can see it being cropped slim pants and interesting tops. Jewellery is always my third piece in summer.

This is a topic I think I've commented on before but can't find where... :-)

My uniform is a print cotton button blouse or knit top, usually black and white, but I have a few which are more colorful; pullover sweater in winter or 3/4 sleeve cardi in spring or fall; black, tan or gray slim pants in winter, neutral or bright solid pencil skirt in summer. Winter shoes are oxfords or Chelsea boots. Summer shoes are chosen from my many pairs of colored sandals: red, pink, blue, brown, tan, black, turquoise. Always earrings, most days a necklace, bracelet or additional ring (to my wedding rings.)

I've found the whole scheme is becoming more uniform as time goes by, and I find myself shopping for good replacements with a narrow eye - Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. But since I will need work clothes for only a season or two more, probably okay and easier on the budget.

I'm a massage therapist, and long ago (I've been practicing for almost 16 years) I knew that I needed to look professional while still meeting the movement and comfort needs of my work.

I wear active wear pants in black or dark grey (long in the winter, cropped in the summer). I use Lands' End because they don't pill, wear through, fade, or stretch out, and they're not too tight. They either have a bootcut or fuller leg so as not to be leggings. For tops I wear Eddie Bauer solid color t-shirts in 3/4 sleeve (fall/winter -- I push the sleeves up anyway) or short sleeve (summer). No logos or prints. Crewnecks are horrid on me, but I have to have a few for some work I do that requires me to bend forward a lot, otherwise I do scoop or v-neck (not too low). The shirts fit close to my body so they don't get in the way, but they're not tight. I also wear Birkenstocks in my practice, as I need the support being on my feet all day. And no jewelry (rings and bracelets for obvious reasons, but nothing else, either). It may not be terribly stylish, but my work is not about me or my fashion sense -- it's purely about my clients -- and my clothes are about projecting a professional image within a very casual atmosphere. I can move comfortably, and everything is inexpensive so it can be replaced easily.

Some MTs wear scrubs (certainly a professional look, though I tried them once and couldn't move in them), and many others push the boundaries of what I would consider professional (and even appropriate -- but not in my office!) so I have a little different situation when it comes to de-casualization.

The only drawback is that I overcompensate with buying for my non-work wardrobe since I have no variety in my work wardrobe! But I wouldn't have it any other way.

I mostly work from home, so denim of some kind is generally part of my uniform on those days. When I have meetings, I up the formality level and do not generally wear jeans. This winter, my main uniform was a sweater dress or long tunic over black ponte pants (slim or bootcut), boots or booties, and a jacket or long cardigan. I also added jewelry -- usually a long statement necklace and simple earrings. My summer uniform for dressier out-of-the home days will likely be non-denim ankle pants or culottes, drapey blouse or dressy knit top, cute flats and some sort of jewelry (necklace or cuff bracelet plus simple earrings). I am a bus commuter, and I prefer not to wear heels or open toed shoes when I use public transportation.

My answer doesn't count since I work from home. But the uniform is jeans and knitwear in winter, and shorts and woven tops in summer. My going out uniforms often involve skirts or dresses in summer, and more layers in winter!

In the early days of my career I had to wear suits, skirts and panty hose so now I avoid those at all cost. Luckily where I work now is more casual, and it's a bunch of guys who really don't notice how I look. I pretty much have a uniform of pants, casual top and sweater and about once a week I wear a dress or skirt to shake it up.

I work in a very casual ag extension & 4-H office, with a district director at the university who has decided to implement an impractical business casual dress code--no jeans, etc. Our entire staff has agreed that someone somewhere in the state must have been wearing some hoochy outfits, or this new dress code would never have come about. So no jeans, but I get around it by wearing white twill jeans. I also try to remain relaxed and comfortable in my NYDJ ponte trousers, which look great but feel really good. I bought some drapey knit jackets to wear instead of cardigans, and Chelsea boots or Dansko sandals instead of pumps. We have not yet been told that we have to wear closed-in shoes, but I do prefer sandals that cover most of my feet, as I have bunions to hid.

No! I'm still struggling to find my footing. Right now, I am like a ball on a billiard table, all over the place with no cohesion. AND I have really nice clothes in my closet, I just don't feel like wearing them. It is a mood thing.

Great question, Carla! I really need a uniform to avoid my morning panic picking out what to wear. I try to be organised and plan ahead, but most mornings I change my mind at the last minute because my planned choice doesn't match my mood.

So...mostly separates, mostly trousers, occasionally dresses--I love dresses but always feel that repeat wears are more obvious. My common uniform thread is layering because our office temps can vary depending on which room I'm in.

Black Crop pants and a short sleeve/ sleeveless top for summer.
Trousers for winter, same tops with a cardigan over.
Flat closed shoes eg ballet flats, loafers.

A couple of other items to break the boredom every now and then - denim or patterned skirt, occasionally a dress.

Yep, it's boring!

I too work at a university, but mine is pretty dressy. And in a hot climate!

I mainly wear sleeveless dresses, some quite structured, others a bit more stretchy. I like both. Summer here is too hot for too much coverage. Towards the end of autumn (now) I'm getting into some pencil skirts. I rarely wear pants because I find them hard to fit, and jeans aren't really dressy enough for work most days as I am in a lot of meetings with men in suits!

I returned to teaching after a 5 year break. I teach one course for 10 weeks. At first I wondered what I was going to wear because I had zero work clothes in my closet. Then I decided to just wear what I had. So I wear:

Jeans without holes. I do not wear jeans with distressing. That leaves me with 2 pairs of jeans to wear.
A nice T shirt. Always with sleeves. The University has not heard of central heating.
A topper. This could be a cashmere cardigan, leather jacket or blazer.
Jewellery and scarf.
I always bring a poncho or large wrap. It is freezing in the classroom.
Boots and socks.
I wear make up.

I have resisted the draw of the office casualization (which usually makes me stand out and have people ask if I'm interviewing). I work in an office with executives who wear suits most days, my peers mostly wear pants and tops (no jackets) and of course the IT folks who have to climb around on floors wear jeans and tees.
My summer work formula is patterned dress and solid blazer or cardigan, pants with patterned top and blazer or cardigan, skirt (pencil or pleated midi) with shell top and blazer or cardigan. I casualize and summarize wearing peep toe wedges when weather (and pedicure) permits. I wear jeans on Fridays, but always with a blazer and dressier shoes.

One part of my wardrobe I kind of have sorted... a pencil skirt, tonal top probably knit or jersey, with an unmatched jacket. Accesories - necklace, small heel closed shoe or quite closed sandal... sometimes a sheath dress or trousers. All the colours 'blend' so its pretty much a mix and match uniform...

Hmm, uniform for work...... I would say jeans without any holes, in any style, and any sort of neat and/or interesting top I might feel like wearing that suits the weather, coordinating very nice shoes.

Or, a pencil skirt with a blouse and very nice shoes.

Or, a sheath dress with very nice shoes.

The common factor is the very nice shoes!
