Bijou has it exactly right! The house across the street from me burned to the ground two years ago. They had to evacuate in the middle of the night in their pajamas. The items most missed were pets and pictures.

The wildfires up here this fall got me thinking about the same thing! Obviously in a house fire I'd grab the cat and go, but wildfire evacuation usually has more advanced warning.

When I smelled all the smoke this fall and wasn't sure how close it was, I had images of carrying my entire wardrobe down to the car - but I doubt it would all fit in my little hatchback! So I'd probably load up a few suitcases with favorite jeans, jackets, and shoes because those are hardest to replace.

But in the end it's just money and of course I'd try to be practical. (A sleeping bag is a great idea, whoever suggested that!)

I hope you're safe from the fires and they get them under control as soon as possible. It's such a scary feeling.

Oh wow, reading this post is making me think I should reorganize my house in order of priorities so I know where all the important stuff is in case I need to get out quickly.

In the past whenever I thought of what I would grab in an emergency, my mind went to sentimental items: a coat my grandma knitted; a black fitted sweater-tunic my mom wore in the 70s and gifted to me in the 90s, and which I still wear.

But yes, beloved living beings, documents, cash, photos, and maybe medicines and cereal bars would come first.

In an emergency, I'd bring my daughter, husband, cat, and laptop. Like Rachy, I'd try to salvage a particular painting and also some family photos -- if possible.

For clothes -- if there were time to pack -- undies!! A pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans. My Aquatalia booties. My Reiss blazer. A cashmere cardigan and a navy merino pullover. A silk blouse. A few scarves. Ring, watch, specs, earrings in silver, and my cognac belt with snakeskin details and silver buckle. A navy dress. Puffer coat, hat, gloves!!

The Cat on "What is your style?"

In case of a fire, I wouldn't think of style at all. I would just try to get away as soon as possible, in whatever I was wearing then. If I had the opportunity, I would grab a bag and throw in some underwear, socks, one or two practical bottoms, some T-shirts and a sweater. And if possible, I would change to shoes/boots which would allow me to run. I would also want to bring a warm jacket/coat. In winter, I would very much hope to be able to add a hat, warm scarf and gloves.

A different question would be: What if I lost practically everything in a fire and had to get a new wardrobe? Then I would focus on my needs (based on my lifestyle) as well as my style and colour preferences . As stated in my profile, my style statement is: Casual Elegant Urban Polished Gamine. And I know my colours--they are all cool. First of all, I would concentrate on getting some versatile basics--like jeans, pants, skirts, a blazer, a cardigan, a piece of outerwear, dressy shoes, casual shoes, a pair of boots, some tees, a couple of pullovers and a couple of woven shirts/blouses--in my favourite neutrals (white, grey and black). And as soon as possible, I would add more tops as well as scarves and other accessories in my favourite non-neutrals (pink, bluered, purple, blue and torquoise).

Your needs may be different. Maybe you don't wear skirts--perhaps you love dresses or shorts. And perhaps you don't need boots but really need sandals. Try to identify your needs, as well as the lines/shapes, fabrics and colours you prefer.

The outfit you mention (black pants, white shirt, cashmere sweater, loafers, fun bag) sounds great. When reading that description, the following words spring to my mind: Classic, sporty, elegant, fun, polished. Some of these words may help you to describe your style.

Accessories are important and can really emphasize you personal style. If you like scarves, what kind of scarves do you prefer? Big or small? Silk, cotton or wool? Also, ask yourself: What kind of jewellery do I like? Are there certain accessories that I really love and/or would like to wear most of the time?

Take a look at your favourite clothing items and accessories. How would you describe them? What do they have in common? THAT may be the essence of your style. Therefore, trying to describe your style preferences by 3-5 words may be helpful. Then, repeat those words when you go through your wardrobe and evaluate whether each item really fits into your style. Ask yourself: Are these pants/shoes really classic, elegant, sporty (or whatever words you have chosen to express your style)? And do the same when you consider to buy something new.

Note that all items don't have to fit into the description of all the 3-5 words of your style statement. If 2 out of 3 words or 3 out of 5 words "fit" exactly, this may be enough. The important thing is that you are convinced that the actual item will be natural part of your general style and an easy and great match with several other items you own.

Best wishes for your style journey. I look forward to reading more about it.

Right now I am seriously rethinking what my style should be as opposed to what it is. Currently my wardrobe is mostly casual as my DH and our friends are casual dressers. This past year my goal was to "wear out" my closet and not replace anything until most of my stuff was worn, thrown out, or donated.

I am now finding that my style does not vary at all and while I see many things that I would love to purchase, I don't think these things will ever get worn. When DH and I were in California this past October there was one evening where most of the women were dressed in cocktail dresses that were beyond the scope of business wear that they suggested we wear for the evening. I felt extremely "under dressed" for the occasion even though I wore a "business like" dress - it was not a cocktail dress.

I have also been working with a personal trainer for the past 6 months and just signed on for a full year of training in 2018. My body which looked good before is now looking even better than I ever imagined at my age (61) and I think I want to wait and buy things as I need them as opposed to when I see something I like.

Rachy - princess daisy is also tied for favorite. I'll take manhattan a distant 4th.

Once I liked in a house with bushland close by, so I had to pack up enough stuff to potentially evacuate our home. Luckily no evacuation was necessary and that was 9 years ago. The priority was making sure family and pets were safe. At the time, stuff does not matter and you are more worried about losing precious memories from photos and family items. I would pack my jewellery, Chanel bag (as unlikely to ever be replaced) and the perfect leather jacket.

In an actual emergency I would be rounding up kids, cats and wallet. But as a thought experiment where I could pack a suitcase full of fashion (let's say I am getting ready to evacuate in front of a hurricane as my family in Florida recently experienced) and I have more time I think it would be my favorite coats, even if I don't wear them most of the year. My lucky vintage velvet, my Margiela leather, my red vintage coat and so on. Even though I am a shoe lover with a large shoe collection, I think my coats are more special to me.

That's strange Gryffin! I just finished Scruples Two last night. I used to love Judith Krantz's novels about 30 years ago and had been thinking about them again, had not read the Scruples series. So just got them from the library. It's fun to read them now I'm older and have travelled a bit. Lots of fun fashion in them amongst... other things.

I guess my style is natural classic—I think. Very heavy on neutrals. I try earnestly to stick to various monikers over the past few years, but it doesn’t work. I have no discipline! I end up just buying what I like (though in a fairly restrictive colour palette) and I seem to be happy with my outfits, so I guess I’m doing alright :-)

Below are some finds. I don’t own all these things but own similar items.

Well, Smittie just dropped "graphic gamine" over on my other thread, which is a good starting place. Strong clean lines, menswear inspired textures (e.g. denim and tweed), an element of high contrast or surprising colour. I'm terrible at monikers, but those are the basic elements I aim for.

As for disaster-preparedness, I'm a terrible planner but have boy scout tendencies: I keep my backpacking kit more or less ready to go, except for perishables, so I'd grab that and throw on my most-special sturdy clothes: my favourite olive green trousers, wool sweater hand knit by my mom, Blundstone boots, plus my warmest down coat and my favourite slouchy beanie (also made by mom), and not look back.

I like for my clothes to look new - no distressing or rips. My shoes have to be polished.

Stylewise, I like to look “perfectly polished,” even when dressed casually. I have trouble dressing down.

I love skinny jeans, boot cut jeans, and straight-legged trousers. My tops are drapey and follow the lines of my body to give a slimming effect. As for my deesses, I have some fit-and-flare and some wrap styles. I love tall and ankle boots, and Dansko sandals. My jewelry collection is rather unique, I’d say, and I have a few long dresses for cruises and such.

My color palette is Soft Summer.

Did you ever read Judith Krantz's Scruples 2, a long ago guilty pleasure? One scene is about the 5 min fire drill wardrobe. What would you pack in one bag in 5 minutes in an emergency and be prepared for anything. My style descriptor is Professional Princess of Darkness P-POD. I am 58 still working and my style is based on the 5 B's - bob, black, blazers, booties, belts. First my beloved DKNY hip belt because it works over everything. Black Everlane coat, I would also wad in my EF black anorak. EF skirted leggings, danskin leggings, EF waxed skinnies and Gap perfect embroidered girlfriends. I can buy more gap tanks for toppers. My new VB scuba jacket and pants because with them I can go anywhere and the DVF zarita dress incase I need to really dress and dressy dresses are hard to find. My HL cropped tux jacket because there will never be another. My ariat bookies because I have fussy feet and my orthotics and glasses of course. My coach anabelle bag because it's perfect. My harmony ball because it goes everywhere. And the Gibson riding jacket because it's irreplaceable. My belts last and a few tops for good measure. My McQ scarf collection. With underwear, socks I'm set for anything. The everlane chunky cardigan and EF long chunky sweater and I'm set for lounge sleep. With a gap tank and leggings I'm set for exercise. All done with cell phone and charger.

Welcome to ULF! I've found that it's wonderful here and this has been one of the few places on the internet that I actually ENJOY visiting.

In case of fire, I'd be up a creek without a paddle because I live in an RV, and everything is so packed in here that I'd trip over the bed trying to rush to grab my clothes. Hopefully, in a few months our house will be finished and getting clothes out won't involve a "cirque de solei" style contortions act.

As for my style , I call myself something of a dystopian minimalist. I like clothes that look like they should have been consigned to the rag bag years ago. Sweaters with laddered stitching so they look like they were ripped. Jeans with distressing. I've even had my husband and his friends take perfectly good garments and take target practice at them. However, I generally limit myself to one shredded garment in an outfit, hence the minimalist part. I also don't do a lot of pattern, and when I do patterns they're usually fairly subtle: black & white, muted grey & muted dusty pink, that sort of thing. I do a lot of neutrals: black, grey, tan, brown, navy, denim. Lately, I've been sort of obsessed with olive and burgundy; they've blended well into my closet because they're pseudo neutrals (they go with almost anything). Over the summer i started adding pinks, but mostly they were dusty or blush or otherwise not very PINK; there were a few berry kind of pinks that bordered on being in the burgundy family.

For cut/silhouette, I generally prefer a firm fitting bottom (skinny jeans, slim fit pants, cigarette pants, leggings, etc) with a longer looser top. Occasionally, when I'm going to be inside and not active (like a day of crocheting or something), I'll do a wide leg pant and who knows what ill put on top: something fitted sometimes, and other times I'll play with proportion in that COS kind of way that puts boxy sweaters over a wide leg pant.

I will say that I probably blame this site for pushing me out of my entirely neutral wardrobe comfort zone. YLF is to blame for the pinks, burgundy, and olive because there's just so much variety here; and Angie can make a trending detail or color work for almost any style persona or budget and then the members just run with it and its awesome.

My style moniker is Quirky Waif!

In a fire, I’d run with what I’ve got on, and hopefully that’s a puffer like Joy said.

I’d take my laptop, phone, wallet, meds, and hopefully would have time to retrieve this one painting by an old family friend.

Another interesting exercise is what you’d buy straight off the bat, to get by. I did a Pinterest board called ‘Empty Closet’ a couple of years ago, thinking about that. I can’t figure out how to link to it tho from off the app (and can’t remember my logins to get through in the browser). I’m pretty sure these days I’d want a black skirt with a big phone pocket, black leggings, wool socks, black sneakers, a long puffer, a beanie, a white sweater and a heattech thermal top. Then I’d go for bakery gear.

Here in NZ we haven't had big fires like the California fires much. There were some last summer in Christchurch, the city that had the devastating earthquake in 2011. I would take our "tin box " if possible with passports etc, and the photo albums if I could, before clothing. We have copies of the "baby videos", one for each child, at the in-laws ( transferred onto DVD).
I think my style could be rebuilt quite easily with new clothing. It is eclectic and I have plenty of favourite local brands. Insurance would help but those photos and videos can't be replaced.

I should add that there is planning and then there can be a different reality. Many people had 5 minutes or less to leave their homes. Also, you might not be home when fires start. Being safe was crucial. The rest is sad, hard, etc. but survivable. I have friends who survived a major large fire years ago. And family with fire losses. And in California there is a lot of support. I can't speak to the international reality of YFLers.

Clothing? Underwear! Probably one of the most requested items in the immediate aftermath of the Northern Ca fires. Because you'd wear your friend's or donated sweaters but you don't want to wear their underwear.
Important papers. Money and credit cards. Nightclothes you're okay wearing in a temporary shelter. A full change of clothes-layers so you can be dressed for the weather. Solid shoes for walking in bad conditions. And maybe sandals to change into if weather is warm. Pillow and sleeping bag/ sheets/blankets as sometimes there is just a mat or cot. Of course I'm assuming a certain type of enviorment. Have photos/files of important photos. Your most precious items. If you have a car, keep it gassed in this situation, and no less than half a tank on "regular" days. You're in earthquake country.

I haven`t been able to come up with my style descriptor but I know it when I see it. I like Jennifer Aniston`s style and I tend to copy some of her looks. The backbone of my wardrobe is great fitting jeans. I would be lost without my jeans.
If I had to evacuate I would take important papers, some jewellery that had sentimental value and my dogs` footprints and fur keepsakes (the dogs that have become angels). I agree with Liz. Style would not be on my mind. Clean underwear would be nice.

For me, it wouldn't be helpful to be thinking of what I'd grab in case of a fire and what my style was, at the same time. Those questions just don't really fit together, in my mind.

In a fire, I'd get ultra practical and pack the basics of what I'd need to live for a week or two -- emphasis on Very Practical. if, that is, I even had time to think straight. Getting important papers and such would be far more important than style. I'd probably be happy if I had underwear and nightwear and clean clothes to wear while I waited it out.

"What's my style" is one of those luxury questions we get to ask when we're not in a fire! You might want to search out some of the posts on Essentials -- they form a backbone for style.

Hmmm. I think the style descriptor I came up for myself a few years ago was Fun Arty Urban Prince. I think it is still fairly accurate. I don’t need all to apply in one outfit, just one or more.

I don’t have anything expensive in the way of clothing or accessories and I am not sentimental so I would grab ID, Kaiser card, credit cards, and the like. I run cold so I would grab my Eddie Bauer gear jacket, fingerless gloves, and extra functional shoes. My husband’s meds are more important to his health, and he takes a whole shoebox of them so I would make sure he had them all as well as his own Kaiser card.

And now we need to run down our original birth certificates so we can get REAL ID drivers licenses to enable us to get on airplanes even domestically in a couple of years.

I'm in SoCal too. Fortunately not near the fires, but my area has not burned in over 25 years, so I dread to think what may happen in the future. Also we are in the more residential flatlands, but close enough to mountains that strong winds + fire = no bueno.

I would take my husband, important papers, jewelry box, medications. I can think of specific clothing items I'd like to take, but doubt I'd have the luxury of time to pick them out.

Maybe consider donating some of your excess stuff to those who have lost all?

Hey MsMary: Thank you. These fire have gotten me jostled. Of course with grief over it all but then again, man, what would I take among the huge closet I have, I am so guilty of having so much I don't even know what's important and what isn;t. My style has changed hugely and so has my life. But yet I have a huge unmanagable closet. I really need help.
