Sorry, Angie. (And thanks to Deb, who gave me a Comedy Award anyway. ) I would be grateful if anyone here would care to explain the difference (between "poison eye" and "style pet peeve") to me.

Janet’s comment resonates about over-designed items- overly embellished. We have a well-known designer here in NZ called Trelise Cooper who tends to do that. I like the look of her pretty dresses in magazines and then I look closer and think- why does there have to be that pretty beading AND lace AND ruffles, couldn’t one be enough? It’s like over-engineered.
I have a sugar eye for fringe though!

That said, there are a handful looks that I am extremely unfond of at the best of times. Yet every so often, someone pulls them off to perfection which offsets my poison eye for the vibe thanks to the incredible DYOT trend.

Mixed plaids do not necessarily need to match if the plaids are random. If they are not random, then they need to match. I also need horizontal stripes to match at the seams.

I do have a poison eye for overly embellished, over-designed pieces — items that have one (or more) too many *things* going on in them. The INC line at Macy’s often falls into this territory for me — I’ll see an item with an appealing print and then realize they’ve also added rhinestones and cutouts and ruching... and I drop it like a hot potato!

Yeah, I think I meant short skirts could be potentially uncomfortable for the wearer in terms of tugging into place/adjusting. But if it doesn’t seem to bother the wearer, it doesn’t bother me.

Oh, Cindysmith, I saw the coolest fringe jacket the other day. Very simple, a rich brown with a row of long (4-6”) fringe across the back and some more at his sides or sleeves or bottom of the jacket. I don’t really remember, just know that it moved just right and he looked so supremely confident, like he owned the neighborhood where we both got off the subway. It was classic Davy Crockett, yes, but also classic 70s disco funk. How could you object to that?

Preppy Pear, ita on high heels and tight clothes looking unbearably uncomfortable. But short skirts? Did you mean to say that is uncomfortable for the wearer?

Strappy tops and dresses layered over another top, especially layered over high necks. Just can’t abide. Hated it in the 90s and hate it now. When Angie posted about this trend awhile back, I was seeing it fairly frequently on campus. It seems to have gone away for now, thankfully.

Anything that looks like the wearer is uncomfortable. But, while heels, short skirts, and tight clothing would make ME uncomfortable, if others wear that sort of thing and seem to be feeling fine, then it’s all good.

Buttons on shoulders bother me, too, although not as severely as they bother you. I have a fairly violent reaction to anything with a ruffle. Ruffles make me want to run screaming in pain LOL. I mean, what is it with all these random ruffles on the bicep portion of sleeves, random ruffles on shoulders, bewbs, etcetera?
And fringe. Why do they do the same thing with fringe?
Ruffles and fringe are my poison-eye items. I just cannot.
And if a store is playing country music, I develop poison-eye for every dang thing in the store. This is Texas, so that happens frequently, which is bad for stores but good for my wallet

I'm not a fan of any pattern not matching up however if it's a small one such as a polka dot I'm mostly ok with it unless the mismatch is front and center and really noticeable.

Two questions for those who can’t it when plaid doesn’t match up at the seams: Do you feel that way about other patterns, and if an outfit includes more than one type of plaid, is it then less irritating if the pattern doesn’t match at the seams of one of them? I feel like multiple plaids in an outfit, in a playful "crazy" way, change the way I interpret the mismatch at the seam, and it's just more crazy.

Body-con clothing that is nearly the exact same tone as the skin of the person who wears it, having a “nude” effect. I don’t have a poison eye for footwear, but for shirts/pants/dresses/swimsuits where it’s nearly the same color. I also don’t have nearly as much of a poison eye when there’s a LOT of texture on the clothing, like a formal gown that is very floaty and sparkly, as opposed to clingy and matte.

Skulls. I simply don't understand why anyone would want to wear pictures of the sad remnants of dead humans. To me, this shows a lack of respect for the dead as well as for the feelings of those who have lost some they love (and who hasn't?). However, I suppose those who enjoy wearing skulls have their reasons--which I just don't know--and that most of the skull wearers don't intend to hurt others' feelings and are likely unaware that they do so.

On the other hand, several of the items that some fabbers in this thread dislike are ones that I actually like. Among these are: buttons on shoulders of sweaters and on sailorpants; viscose; shirts with knotted tails at the waist; loafers.

I find it interesting that our poison eye items--and preferences--are so different.
