I didn't answer in this thread earlier because I was still searching for a summer handbag. I have a favorite "winter" bag -- a MK bowling satchel, I think it's the large size, in an oxblood color -- but really wanted something lighter in color for spring/summer. I finally found one and have used it for a few weeks and can say that it's a favorite!

Elliott Luca medium Faro satchel. I love satchel styles because I usually carry bags on my wrist, but occasionally want a cross-body strap. I never carry from my shoulder; it's too uncomfortable. I like light-colored interiors and will not buy a bag with a dark interior. I like one (or more) exterior pocket for my keys, and use a purse organizer inside. I prefer metal feet, and this bag doesn't have it but for the price I decided it was OK. A more expensive bag absolutely needs feet. I always hang a Clipa purse hook from my bag, so it rarely goes on the floor, anyway. I like zipper closures (rather than totes with a snap), though most of the time, I leave my bag open. I just like the option.

The leather on this bag is not as nice as my MK bag, but it's nice enough (nicer than other ~$100 bags that I've looked at). I'm not worried about it getting ruined or damaged, and will happily use it in the rain and snow. For the price, I don't mind it getting a little banged up. It looks like it will handle some distressing nicely.

I prefer structured handbags. I used hobos for years but could never find anything in them! Satchels have been working well for me for daily use for the last few wears, but I only like ones that have handles and a strap, so you can wear it on your shoulder if you need to go hands free. And I like colored bags when most of my outerwear is neutral, and vice versa.

I use a cross body hobo for work. I just look for one with some metallic sheen. This spring I found my all time favorite- a leather Longchamp in a metallic Champagne gold. It works with everything and it's light as a feather.

MZ Wallace Paige is my second favorite. More structure but still light weight.

I'm slowly replacing all heavy leather bags with lightweight nylon bags or something like the Longchamp Hobo. For me my back and shoulders take priority over the beauty of a bag.

My two favorites;

I used to buy totally cheap handbags, but they rarely lasted long. Two years ago I decided to slowly add a few high quality bags in colors that are versatile for my wardrobe.

I still don't consider myself a bag girl, and I only swap out bags every few months; it's too much of a hassle to change daily.

I love bags, but am just too lazy to rotate with every outfit. I have two that have been in heavy rotation since January:

1. Kate Spade Beau satchel for work days when I have things to carry (like my lunch bag, water bottle, coffee, yoga clothes, etc...). I chose it because:
-I love the way it looks!
-It fits all of my stuff so I only carry one bag in to work
-It is sturdy, structured, and stands neatly on my desk instead of flopping over

2. Coach Sadie for other work days or smart casual occasions when I am carrying just the basics. I chose it because:
-I love the metal trim and pretty colour; IRL it is somewhere between grey and lilac
-It is the perfect size for my essentials: keys, phone, wallet, sunglasses.
-I can carry it by its top handle or sling the strap over my shoulder

I'm not a handbag girl either. I need hands free for leash-wrangling and coffee cup holding. My shoulders slope, as well, so sliding straps are an issue.

Mostly, I try to travel as light as possible, and do a waist purse. My current one is actually a crossbody from Target with straps shortened as much as possible. If I have to carry a little more, I perforce do a crossbody... but there's something about the look of that which bothers me. I don't know if it's just that I'm not used to seeing myself with a purse.

For work, for transporting my paper notebook / tablet, I have a little tiny backpack purse from Walmart. If I must carry my laptop, it's a vertical tote or backpack. I find the vertical tote a little more ergonomic, the backpack the most ergonomic and protective of laptop circuitry (better than a rolling case, that is). I work in tech, so we get a pass on this kind of *gear look* at the office... when it comes to bags, anyways.

Like others, it depends on what I'm doing. For everyday running errands, I prefer a cross body with adjustable straps so it can also be worn on the shoulder, smallish but not tiny, about the dimensions of a hardback book - big enough for my wallet, phone, cosmetics bag, small notebook, and a couple other things.

For other events, the bag gets bigger - whether I need to carry paperwork and/or a tablet and/or a notebook and/or my laptop and/or my lunch or a snack. I've got a satchel or two but most of the rest of my bags are totes, plus a proper laptop backpack for plane travel.

For travel - a crossbody leather bag large enough to carry all of the stuff I need. Handy with three zippers in front to keep my business travel expense receipts in one place.

For everyday - I used to be a large purse girl but lately I've switched to smaller bags. So much better. It's counter-intuitive, but this yellow bag goes with everything and has been a workhorse.

Lightweight, hands-free, must have a full zip top closure, and be reasonably roomy. My favorite bag shape is a hobo with just enough structure that it can stand up on its own when it has stuff in it. I prefer a shoulder bag for larger bags (work bags, because I bring my lunch and other stuff, and it takes up room in my bag), and a crossbody for small bags (my weekend bags). I find larger crossbodies uncomfortable when full because they tend to bump too much on my hips (and shortening them enough so that they don't bonk my hip makes them uncomfortable in other ways).

At the moment, my two favorite bags are my MZ Wallace olive nylon hobo and my red Longchamp Quadri hobo. If I only could have one bag, I think the red one wins because of the color. It's pictured below in finds in black (the red is sold out).

I agree with Susie about office wear.

I like the idea of cross body bags for casual wear, but I find them problematic because I'm busty and they often make an unappealing line across my body.

That said, some of my favorite bags are clutches that have detachable straps -- I can sling them over my shoulder or use them cross body when I need to.

I frequently change bags (usually a few times a week) so I would have a difficult time choosing a favorite. But if I HAD to, it would probably be a satchel style in black or silver/pewter.

Thanks very much for the replies so far! It is helpful to hear what is working for you. For those of you that are cross body bag lovers, I can see why this is appealing because of the hands free aspect. Do you find that cross body is dressy enough for an office? i find it has kind of a casual vibe but I love the function. I guess in truth I don't actually wear my bag that much at the office, mostly just to and from.

The ideal bag: cross-body, zip closure, outside zip pocket for keys and glasses, large enough for everything else, no extraneous decoration, especially metal. I have a Fossil that fits this description exactly. Mine is a bright green. If it were grey it would be perfect.

But if I had to stick with just one, it would probably be a structured but lightweight satchel in a medium size, zip closure, with straps that carry easily in the hand or over the arm, but also long enough that I can throw it on my shoulder too. I'd go for a metallic that is seasonless and goes with everything. I also use my silver Milly tote a LOT.
