Cross posted IK... yes so true. Everyone has different images that these terms conjure.

Suz... yes I cannot choose something that is bordering on frumpy or isnt good for the lifestyle I lead or I wont learn anything. Ive got to think about the classic - preppy relationship in my mind

Well, I think that would be really unfair. I love Beth Ann's idea. But you have to do it with a MODERN CLASSIC look vs. an "arty" look or else it will be a totally false dichotomy. And it has to be created from items you'd actually conceivably wear. So if button downs are not your thing, you can't use a button down -- you'd have to use a knit. And so on.

Choosing an ultra preppy (what you described) or staid classic look (pencil and twinset) would be unilluminating.

So, what you need is a few of your most current classic cuts. Look to Angie's outfits for inspiration.

You could wear slim jeans or fluid bootcut trousers, a fluid knit or a tailored blazer, skinnies tucked into boots, or any variety of items. Just make sure they are current yet classic in design. Here is Angie's list: http://youlookfab.com/2013/06/.....ern-style/

I think there are many different definitions of classic and arty. And I also think it has to do with the piece and not with the outfit.

Another one may be a striped breton, capris and ballet flats?

I'd say a knee-length pencil skirt with a twinset.

Did you see this comparison I did, Sarah, with two outfits featuring the same jacket and boots? I would say outfit #1 in that post is classic (well, as classic as I ever get) and #2 is arty. I wonder if that would be a good exercise for you - take one piece (or two) and make a classic outfit and an arty one from it.

Beth Ann challenged me in one of my posts to spend some time wearing a more arty outfit and a really classic outfit to compare how I feel in each look. So I have been pondering for a few days, what totally head to toe classic can I wear to try this out. And I am at a bit of a loss for what I think is truly classic? Ideas bouncing in my head are straight leg jeans and a white button down (maybe a blue blazer with that too), white pants slim pants (dont have any!) and a black cashmere turtleneck, a tailored sheath with pumps maybe (not for taking care of preschoolers!)? Surely there are many more? When you think of THE classic outfit what comes to mind?
