I hope whatever length you decide upon works out for you, Vicki. Trench coats are both practical and stylish wardrobe items.

I've found very short or very long trench coats to be impractical. Ones at either extreme length are either too cold or too hot 90% of the time in my climate. I feel self-conscious in longer than knee length coats in anything short of torrential rain or a blizzard. And I'm generally not self-conscious bordering on oblivious most of the time.

I think it depends. Mine is mid thigh. I only wear it with jeans. I prefer that length for me because it is easier for driving and for walking.

You’re reading my mind, Aida, and I feel like the knee length will “lift” my short frame rather than “drag” it down, but oh do I wish I could swish around town in a longer length. I just think it may not flatter me. Sterling, with your regal height, I’m sure you look lovely in the rain.

Vicki my hunch is you'll want your trench mid-knee or just above the knee (that will probably look best with pants on you) unless you specifically are aiming for a length to wear with skirts/dresses. Definitely try pinning it just below the knee to see how it feels, though! It's a lovely length but you may find it skews some of your proportions a bit as a shortie :)

Mine is midi-length. I love the extra protection and swish of the fabric as I walk. I'm 5'10" and wear pants. I would never consider hemming it. But I only wear it in rainy weather.

Thank you, my wise trio on trenches!!! I generally wear more pants and skinnies. Angie, when you say you prefer them on the longer side, do you mean midi-length or below the knee?

I’m leaning toward right at my mid-knee and may pin it up to see how it looks. Interestingly, when I saw the recent engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markel, I noticed her white trench was about an inch or so above her dress length. I felt it might be a tad too short for my liking, and that’s what prompted my question here.

I agree with Aida- it should be what looks best on the individual and the predominant underpinnings. Also whether one is using it as real rainwear.
For an investment trench I think I want about knee length , not those that are mid thigh or 4” above— something that looks good over knee length skirts and dress but not too overwhelming over pants and still gives an effortless but not sloppy look unbuttoned . I can’t carry off midi very well but it can look great on the right body type, or if you wear heels a lot.

Depends (as always) The lengths you've listed are pretty fail proof, but shorter and longer still works. For example mine is mid-thigh which is shorter than the 2" above the knee suggestion; I used to wear a hip length mini trench which was fun, and my mom has a fabulous midi length trench. I think for you the key is to shorten to a length that is compatible with what you'd want to wear underneath (pants, skirts, dresses...), as well as take into consideration whether a longer length will overwhelm your frame.

I came across this article that said women’s trench coats should be two inches above the knee and no longer than mid-knee length (is that the kneecap?). That’s a wide range and I have an old trench coat that I would like hemmed as it’s very long and I want to make sure that I have hemmed it to a nice-looking and proper length. Any ideas or suggestions from those of you who know? Thanks.
