Today we went out for a movie date, and DH wore an upgraded weekend ensemble! Woohoo!

Karymk - DH used to travel a lot in his last position, and was able to go 4-5 weeks before he had to iron a shirt! (I used to feel like I was in Gatsby's closet!). Now he is down to 10 dress shirts! He has the side of the closet that has two rods for hanging (I have one). He also, has the back of the closet for a special tie rack and for his hats! FWiW, he is check-through when we travel, whereas I am carry-on!

Kkards - DH understood and liked the idea of a 'golf capsule', and calling his sports clothes and field-work clothes 'gear' worked like magic. When I compared his wearing his golf shirts to work as akin to me wearing yoga pants to my work, he made the connection! I don't think he will break the habit completely, but he did separate the golf shirts into 2 piles, and identified one pile as 'gear', not to be worn at work!

LynD - DH did all the work and made all the decisions. I didn't touch the stuff, until the very end when we were putting outfits together. I've helped him with maybe 3 wardrobe culls in the past, but this was been the biggest.

TraceyLiz and Deb - his idea (which was a big factor) but I am sure it was precipitated by several things (much like what motivates us): our recent relocation and new house, his new job, his (and my) age and place on life (mid 50's) and how his clothes in addition to not being right for his new work environment, might not have fit who he feels like now?

Angie - the only thing that was non-negotiable, and kept for emotional reasons were his two Seahawks jerseys! He has been a fan since I've known him (35 years).

Unfrumped - I was most surprised by how much men's suit jacket style has changed. There were some shockingly overpadded shoulders that had to go!

How satisfying to achieve this! My husband has a very casual office and I have only recently got him to buy some woven casual shirts to wear, instead of the polo shirts that he ALWAYS wore. It was a red letter day in our household, so I celebrate this occasion with you!

That is awesome. It's great that even though his work clothes are more casual, you can help him identify his " dressy capsule", or things like a backup interview suit, and similar things that avoid last-minute panic-shopping. Plus as you say, just because items are in the closet doesn't mean they fit or look good without updating.

How wonderful! A great time to do this with a new year and the new job being one he likes and plans to stick with..
. I sort of did this with DH before our Ireland trip showing him options of things he could put together in new ways and making a list to get a few new items.. the purge part would be a fight for him. so for now.. staying away from that.. Perhaps I could offer for us to do one together as I am sure he feels I need to do it...
Congrats on such a successful day!

Good job Carla! I love that you are your DH's style consultant. I can't believe he took up more space than you! Now that you've done an unemotional, systematic purge, it's time to fill in the gaps and do a shop.

When my husband is at work or on a business trip,I secretly donate his lycra golf shirts. He only notices once in a blue moon, when I hear yelling from his closet. "WHO TOOK MY FLOURESCENT GREEN MERION CRICKET CLUB GOLF SHIRT!"

Yesterday was great fun with DH, who asked me to help him with a closet purge!

9 months ago he started a new job (that he loves!). However after years of dress pants, dress shirts, ties, and the occasional jacket, he is in a much more casual work environment (no ties. Not ever!) His fall back for summer was to don golf shirts with his lighter weight work trousers. With cooler weather, he has been wearing his dress shirts under sweaters, sans tie. Weekend wear was the same old faded jeans with a rugby shirt or t-shirt. Still, he was feeing like he 'had noting to wear' though he was taking up the greater part of our walk in closet!

So, yesterday afternoon, I had him put the litmus test of YLFabulosity to his clothing. If it was stained, ripped, or worn past repair - trash. If it didn't fit, if he hadn't worn it in a year or more, if he didn't love it - donate. We ended up with two bulging garbage bags ready for dispatch.

Then I had DH put together two complete looks for the dressiest occaision he might encounter (something he might panic about since so much of his former biz apparel had been discharged). That done, we moved to 'better' weekend wear, and also had a talk about golf shirts as 'gear' vs 'work wear'. Then we put together some work appropriate outfits mixing casual items with dressier things in combinations DH hadn't thought of, including some items he thought might be orphaned since he had dispatched what he thought of as their companion pieces. He feels better equipped to dress 'for the life he lives' now, and going into the future.

Though we probably reduced things by 40%, DH's shopping list for new items is very modest. He still doesn't see fashion as 'fun' but he enjoyed the attention, and expressed some relief that he will go into the new year dressed in a more cohesive manner!
