Do you sew for others? </p> https://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/what-is-ponte#post-1099904 Wed, 27 Nov 2013 22:12:14 +0000 barbaraq 1099904@https://youlookfab.com/welookfab/ <p>Hi, this is my first reply to YLF. &nbsp;I am an almost lifetime seamstress, and make most of my own clothes. &nbsp;Here is my impression about Ponte: &nbsp;Unlike the dreaded all-polyester stuff of the 70s, today's Ponted is almost alwast a blend of fibers. &nbsp;Mostly it is Rayon, Polyester &amp; Lycra (RPL to fabric sellers.) &nbsp;If you can find it in retail clothing, look for a Rayon, NYLON, Lycra mix. &nbsp;A &nbsp;better blend that resists pilling much more than RPL. &nbsp;Eileen Fisher, St.John and other higher end retailers use this mixture, and I insist on it for the clothes I sew for myself. Today's polyester blends are worlds away from the the polyesters of by-gone years. Even top designers include polyesters and other synthetic blends in their lines these days. </p> <p>Like all man-made fibres, companies are constantly experimenting and re-tooling their products to eliminate some of the less desirable qualities. Although technically the same fibre, today's modal blends are world away from the shrink- and wrinkle-prone rayon garments that were worn in the fifties and sixties. </p> <p>A high-quality, polyester blend ponte knit can be a very useful item in a modern wardrobe. Vildy is correct in saying that Ponte de Roma refers to a type of stable knit instead of a particular fibre. </p> <p>And all of this is coming from a fabric snob who fell in love with a faux leather jacket that she lovingly refers to as her "plastic fantastic" and regularly wears with her pricey Brora cashmere sweater. I used to hate poly doubleknit when I was a kid since it was so hot and itchy and stiff.
