Hi, this is my first reply to YLF. I am an almost lifetime seamstress, and make most of my own clothes. Here is my impression about Ponte: Unlike the dreaded all-polyester stuff of the 70s, today's Ponted is almost alwast a blend of fibers. Mostly it is Rayon, Polyester & Lycra (RPL to fabric sellers.) If you can find it in retail clothing, look for a Rayon, NYLON, Lycra mix. A better blend that resists pilling much more than RPL. Eileen Fisher, St.John and other higher end retailers use this mixture, and I insist on it for the clothes I sew for myself. ( I don't find the Nylon to be any "hotter" to wear than Poly. ) This my two cents worth.

I just wanted to chime in to add a bit of support for--of all things--polyester. Today's polyester blends are worlds away from the the polyesters of by-gone years. Even top designers include polyesters and other synthetic blends in their lines these days.

Like all man-made fibres, companies are constantly experimenting and re-tooling their products to eliminate some of the less desirable qualities. Although technically the same fibre, today's modal blends are world away from the shrink- and wrinkle-prone rayon garments that were worn in the fifties and sixties.

A high-quality, polyester blend ponte knit can be a very useful item in a modern wardrobe. Vildy is correct in saying that Ponte de Roma refers to a type of stable knit instead of a particular fibre.

And all of this is coming from a fabric snob who fell in love with a faux leather jacket that she lovingly refers to as her "plastic fantastic" and regularly wears with her pricey Brora cashmere sweater. If we eliminated modern fibres from our wardrobes, most of us would be in dire straits.

didn't read Sal's article yet but often ponte doesn't have polyester as such.
It mostly refers to a process - a kind of knit - I think. Can be rayon and nylon
and some elastic. Can be a wool blend.

I'll admit to being underwhelmed by the sound of it lol. I remember plenty of poly blend pants in the 70's and am in no hurry to find what the reworked modern version is like. I'm happy with my cotton and my modal blends. And I'll take rayon but don't seek it out Guess I like my head in the sand on this one!

Today's ponte knit is made of polyester AND a good mix of rayon so it has some softness and drape, unlike the poly doubleknit of the past. I used to hate poly doubleknit when I was a kid since it was so hot and itchy and stiff. However I LOVE ponte knit and I trying to figure out how to get an entire wardrobe of it!

Thanks Sarah--funny I missed that post as I read Already Pretty as well--so I guess the answer is yes it is my Mom's navy blue pants, and beige ones and brown ones and...--and my guide leader jacket and a line skirt and my ski pants when I was 7 and my beloved side zippered "Lara Petry" pants when I was 4 and....the local nuns' first post habit uniforms and....
And funny that that green Target dress in Sal's post is the one I've been going back and forth to when I was looking up ponte knit--so nice!

I read that it is a thick polyester knit fabric and, from what I've read and seen in pics here, lots of clothes are made of it but what is it? Is it the modern cloth version of my Mom's 40 yr old polyester elastic waist pants (you know the ones with the sewn seem up the front of the legs) (no offense Mom!). Will I know what it is when I see it in person or do I need to check the tag? Stupid questions I know but I have no idea for real!!
