Oneirix,

Thank you so much for your wise words, they make perfect sense. I am learning so much about not only fashion decisions but attitudes that can be so important in how we look and feel about ourselves. Acceptance of who we are is the beginning of what Angie called recently effortless style. Before I really thought about body types, I had a sense of when clothes worked and when they didn't.
Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

Hey Greenglove!

WOW you're 50?! I NEVER in a million years would have guessed that! You look so young! Congratulations! I'm crossing my fingers that I look that good when I get older...

I understand being disappointed in the body type that you end up being, especially because every other site talks about how "the hourglass is the most ideal" and all of the compliments towards other shapes sound almost forced, at least to me. I always dreaded being considered an inverted triangle (which I am) because I felt like that meant I had "man shoulders" and that I was too masculine. So when I heard hat my measurements meant I was an hourglass, I was elated. But it never felt right, and the tips for dressing never looked right. But when I try things based on the correct shapes for the correct parts of my body, I look fabulous; and that's really what it's all about! It's to help you look amazing, not make you feel bad.

My tip to you (if you haven't already) is to read Angie's specific blog articles about your shape(s), like "The Racy Rectangle" and "The Statuesque Inverted Triangle" and "The Hot Hourglass" (you can search for them in the google search bar). I've never read articles about each body shape that seemed so accurate and sincere in its compliments and observations. I've never, EVER liked the idea of being predominantly inverted triangle until I read Angie's blog, and now I couldn't be more proud!

Also, finding celebrities that match your shape makes you feel pretty good about it too. Charlize Theron has always been one of my favorites, and now she's an even better style icon for me because she shares my body type.

So good luck to you, and be proud of what you've got, because it's amazing, and it's one of the few things on this earth that is 100% uniquely yours.

Tanya, I have a friend who has a 23" waist, and yes, she is very tiny. So is her whole family. She has basically given up on pants and jeans and only ever wears skirts and dresses because pants are never small enough for her. Maybe I'll tell her about those jeans. But yes, they do exist

This brand does go on sale, at Nordstrom as well, but it's usually the more trendy seasonal styles that get discounted. These are considered pretty much the classics in their line so they are rarely on sale. A lot of online boutiques sell them and they discount them some time, but it's really random. I missed out on the first pair I posted ( but on RevolveClothing site), and now the only size they have left is 23 , I always wonder who can wear that.

Thanks Tanya,
I have heard that J Brand fits really well. None of my jeans are great, they all stretch out after I wear them one day. I am on a tight budget and have been trying to decide what to purchase as my one special thing for my 50th birthday that happened this summer. My husband thinks jeans are not that special but maybe knowing that is what looks best on me and what I wear the most is where I should invest.

Thanks for the help, those jeans look amazing!! Does Nordstroms ever have them on sale?

Greenlove,
with your figure I think you can wear any jeans! In fact, I think jeans were made for bodies like yours!

You would look absolutely amazing in a pair of skinny/straight legs ( my favorite brands for that are J Brand and Seven for all Mankind). But bootcuts, flares, all would be smashing on you! The jeans world is your oyster!

If I had your amazing body and could pick just one premium pair I'd go for J Brand 14 " cigarette mid-rise in a super dark wash. Like these:

http://www.tobi.com/product/58.....or_id=1931

Tanya,
Thank you so much, it is really helpful to hear and see how others take guidelines from different types. I always love your choices. What kind of jeans are best if I was to invest in one premium pair?

GG, you can be a racy rectangle with a fuller bust. You are proof of it! Take those guidelines from the hourglass blurb. You can tend towards a few body types, but at the end of the day your silhouette is not curvy, which is what makes you rectangular. Your body type is super athletic. Does that makes sense?

Wow Greenlove, you have an amazing body! I hope I look half as good as you do when I come to your age.

I'd agree about you being mostly rectangular with inverted triangle tendencies ( because of your pretty shoulder line and chest). I know that it sounds complicated but it's really only a beginning point. Guidelines are there for us to adopt them to our own case. For example. I am an hourglass, but since I have very curvy hips and smallish chest, I also look at rules for pears and even some for rectangles to apply to my top half.

Trying on a lot of things helps, and photos do even more.

Wrap dresses should look lovely on you. I am huge fan of both wrap dresses and tops ( they joked about calling me " The Wrap" here). You should try a wrap top, a real one that has long ties that ties at the waist; since I think it will do two great things for you: accentuate your chest area and create more of a waist. Good luck!

Wait! What?!? Greenglove you are FIFTY?????? As in fifty years old?? OK, I'm not kidding---when I saw you photo in this thread, I thought MAYBE you were like 23 or 24--seriously.

Wrap dresses work well for you because they create a waist. Scoopnecks work well for you because you have a chest (a high neckline would make you look chestier).

I find the best tool in determining what looks good on me is taking photos. I am always amazed at how I think something looks good in a mirror, but looks boxy and big in a photo. I also think it's important to try styles that are outside your body type suggestions. You just may find something that is cut just perfectly for your shape. Its nice to have guidelines, but it's also fun to try new things and maybe be surprised once in a while.

I'm still in shock that you are 50.

Thank you so much Oneirix!

It is confusing and I was a little depressed thinking that my body had no curves and was a rectangle. I am probably wrong in my fear of the rectangle. I guess line drawings of the body types make it even harder and the description of rectangle and inverted triangle do not feel like they describe me. But maybe I have been delusional. It is new to me, I was evaluated by a professional about 10 years ago when I was heavier and she said I was an hour glass. I am 50 now so maybe things have changed. I think that your advice is right on, not to get too hung up fitting perfectly into one ctagory and continually looking for what feels and looks good on our unique figures. It is uncomfortable having others look at your body and see it in a different way but I so appreciate all the honest feedback.

I think if there's one thing I've definitely gotten out of asking these lovely ladies body type questions (other than boosted self esteem!), it's that there is never going to be one category your body will fit into. Your own body is unique so you will need to tweak the rules of a couple different types to get the best look that suits you.

For the past year or so I personally have struggled so hard with trying to fit into a body type, and it took asking the advice of others for me to realize that trying to conform what is "normal" for one body type isn't going to be perfect for my own special body. The body types are guidelines, not rules. Ultimately, you know what works best for you!

I think that the most helpful piece of information from figuring out approximately where you fit in the body type scheme is WHY certain things look good on you. You know that certain parts of you body lend themselves to one type, and other parts lend themselves to another, so you can mix and match the rules to suit you. I'm in between shapes myself, so I'm new to this, but you're not alone in being a little confused and bemused about this whole "several types at once" thing. We're all here to help. :)

Re: the wrap dresses, in my experience those are both extremely flattering on everyone!

Thank you all for your help. I am kind of confused about how to dress for a rectangle who does not have a flat chest. I read a post about rectangles and that I guess is the part that confused me. Scoop necks have always worked for me as well as wrap dresses. Is that normal for a rectangle?

I agree, you look like an inverted triangle from the front. I'm not sure what you mean when you say your 'hips stick out more in the back'. Do you mean you have a full bum?

Personally, I think inverted triangles wear full pants well because it balances out our upper body. You are very small though, so any fullness in your pants needs to be proportionate to your overall frame. I'd say your best jean cut would be boot cuts.

Yes you're an inverted triangle, your shoulders are definitely wider than your hips and thighs.

If you feel you have a shelf-like hip at the back - this is a high hip and means that you should look for straighter styled bottoms rather than flared bottoms.
