At least in the Pacific Northwest, a lot of the software corporate firms are much more casual than business casual. It depends, though, on the company. I usually err on the side of dressing up a bit more anyway (for example - at my corporate company, which is not a software firm, non-distressed jeans are acceptable; however, I feel more comfortable wearing a skirt or dress most days. Officially, our dress code is "business casual", but if you look at the actual items allowed, it's really more "smart casual, but there may be some occasions where more professional attire is appropriate.")
I dressed up especially during my first month on the job, even though I could see that I was in a more casual department, because I wanted to gauge what was going to be appropriate.
If you do get a job offer, it definitely isn't silly to reach out to an HR representative before the first day of work and see if they can send you the dress code blurb to make sure that you are dressed appropriately. I've had a few new employees do this before I meet with them on their first day.
I wish you very well on your search, and hope we'll be hearing about an exciting new opportunity for you soon!

LOL r.e. pantyhose...I am totally going to get some polka dot hose for Fall! Sometimes it's worth it!

I work in a corporate IT dept for a fashion company, so we probably get away with stuff that other more formal places wouldn't (i.e. maxi dresses/mini skirts/distressed denim). Dark wash jeans are acceptable any day of the week, although I prefer to dress them up with heels and a jacket. On days when I have to meet with executives or finance I avoid jeans because I want to echo what they'll be wearing (which is more formal than what our dept usual wears).

If you want to see what I typically wear to work you can browse through my silly outfit blog:

Good luck with the job hunt!

Tell me about it... but in this economy, I gotta do what I gotta do. Except wear pantyhose. I draw the line.

Hopefully you will be able to incorporate some of that wardrobe into a software company wardrobe. That is quite a change in mindset too, though.

I worked in entertainment for years and have a closet I was well on my way to loving... and now face overhauling it for work. Sigh.

Hi IK, I agree with Sona. It also depends A LOT on the company. The company that I used to work for didn't allow jeans of any type, not even black ones, except on "dress down" Friday.

Though software firms are notorious for being very laid back.

Check out http://www.corporette.com and err on being a little more conservative until you land a job. Once you get in, dress up a little the first week or so and then ease into what the others are doing. Also, NEVER be afraid to ask HR - that is something that they are dealing with more and more regularly. It shows that you do your homework.

Good luck and keep us posted !!!!

Oh, and I should specify, I always dress to the nines for an interview... I mean more day-to day.

it depends on the specific jeans. in general I'd say you are safer wearing 'trouser trousers' a woven shirt and a blazer/jacket. For a job interview I'd say overdressed is better than vice-versa in many situations.

I lost my job at the beginning of the year and am looking for a new one. Some of the best prospects are at more "corporate" software firms here in Austin. Austin is fairly casual (except when you dress up at night, then whoa howdy), so I am wondering - what exactly is corporate dressing? Can I get away with smart casual? Can I wear jeans if they're very dark trouser types, with a jacket and smart shoes?

Obviously I'll have a better gauge if/when I finally get that elusive new job... but general ideas would help my pre-emptive wardrobe anxiety. Thanks!
