In my neck of the woods, just about anything goes. I hang out with a pretty casual crowd and am usually one of the few, if not the only one, wearing a dress or skirt. Most of the time I'll see people wearing nice blouses with jeans or shorts, and occasionally there's a smart-casual dress in the mix too.

LOL at Angie's comment.

Seconding the pretty dress or skirt. It seems to be de rigeur.

And here I was thinking - well, you shouldn't wear anything when you shower unless you are grossed out at the gym and wear rubber flip flops.

Here most women wear dresses or skirts and this is a very casual jean-wearing environment. I think you'd be safe in something that you'd wear to church.

It really depends on the community and the specific group. I've been to some where everyone was in denim, and others where everyone was wearing a dress. I would err on the side of a bit dressy unless there is an announced theme, or unless it's to be held outdoors. I don't mean formal attire, but a dress or skirt isn't out of place.

At the baby shower I went to last weekend at least 75% of the women were wearing cute jersey dresses and sandals. Nothing too dressy - almost all the men were wearing jeans.

People often end up sitting on the floor during the long round of present-opening.

I'd go dressy casual - but sometimes there is a theme or activity planned - good to check out beforehand.

I would say a dress is mostly always appropriate to a shower. Fabrication will depend upon time of year , time of event and location of event.

I've had a rather lot of them in the last few years too.

Here I've found them dressiser than they were ten years ago.

Wedding showers definately a dress, cute shoes and jewellery. Baby showers are less dressy but a cute dress wouldn't be wrong there either.

I'm not a dress person so always do skirts but I find sometimes I feel not quite right at wedding showers. They really tend to bring out "the dress" there.

It always depends on the season, but for a shower: a pretty dress, cardigan, pearl necklace, fun heels and statement bag. For a wedding, let the formality of the occasion dictate what you wear. Is the wedding casual or formal? Indoors or outside? In a church? If in a church it is always respectful to cover your shoulders (also no bra straps showing, no cleavage and no miniskirts). Dress up for a wedding and a funeral, it shows respect (and class). The casualness of the day is one of my pet peeves.

I'd say polished casual. I personally wear jeans everywhere, but I'd dress them up at a shower.

Hmm. I think I would describe it this way: if it would be appropriate for afternoon tea, it's usually appropriate for a shower. Does that help?

ETA: Afternoon tea at an upscale hotel. It's not formal or cocktail, but you're slightly dressed up.

I have a really silly question. I've started going to wedding and baby showers lately and I've realized something. I have no idea what I'm suppose to wear. At the last shower I went to, I showed up in jeans and realized I was rather under-dressed. What are you suppose to wear to these things?
