I think of blouses as having silky or lacy fabric, either pull on or with buttons.

Did anyone else notice that NAS doesn't have a single "blouse" or "top"? They have shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, t-shirts and tank tops as categories, although item descriptions include the words blouse, top and shirt mostly according to Angie's descriptions. I could understand everything that is worn above the belt being classified as a "shirt" for the sake of searches, but sweatshirts are not included in that (the numbers change when I include sweatshirts). So weird.

For me, I think it is the drape of the fabric that makes the difference, but also a collar and cuffs (that make a shirt a shirt).

Irina, Helena and others--A common hybrid expression, "shirt blouse," does exist and has been around for decades. You can probably find countless examples online.

Also in this case, however, definitions and opinions might vary.

For what it's worth: The Scandinavian equivalents of "shirt blouse" ("skjortblus" and "skjortebluse") generally mean 'a finer button-front shirt for females.'

Definitely a know it when you see it distinction for me. I wear lots of blouses and not so many shirts because the stiffer tailoring of a shirt doesn't often fit on me. But I do have shirts that I like too.

It’s a hard one. Is this a blouse or a shirt? I would describe it as a blouse due to its soft style.

Interesting. I agree with Suz. If it’s soft and drapey, it’s a blouse. And often has buttons. The blouse examples Angie showed, I would have simply classified as tops, full stop.

I mostly agree with Angie, but I also agree with Suz; in my mind, some blouses can have buttons on the front, provided they are otherwise "blousy" enough.

Me, again. This a question I have from my other thread. What do you call “a blouse”? I had this idea from my experience with tailor-made clothes that there are:
- shirts (take on man wear, button down shirt, popover shirts)
- tops (solid front with no front buttons)
- blouses (v-neck or a round neck with buttons, feminine, made of soft fabrics, often with pleats, bows, soft collars and other details).
I often lack some terminology or have different understanding of it.
Googling didn’t make it clear. What do you call a “blouse”?

P.S. not asking for a friend I don’t have a single garment in my wardrobe that I call “a blouse “. I wonder if I’m mistaken.
