There are multiple types of difference from one university to the next, figuring out where you can be admitted is anything but straightforward, and university is quite expensive. That means most prospective students prefer to have their parents support them. Universities admissions departments know this and are set up for parents to accompany their offspring on campus visits. Fortunately, though, the spotlight (I think—check with me next month) is all on the youngsters. I worked in an independent pre-K through 6th grade school years ago (I was an admin asst and then publications director, not a teacher), and I remember fielding calls from parents to get on the list for admissions testing when the kids hadn’t even been born yet! In the UK we went completely alone (I was 18) and went to all open days and interviews across the country alone. </p> <p>With my son, tomorrow is just the open day where they explain what the school is like and how to apply, but this is an early one just for the kids that are already at the youchien. They had to have an interview when they entered that (at 3!! Though was very basic and is the norm for all kindergartens.) The ones in Tokyo can be extreme though and you have to send them to a prep school from 2.5y where they have to all dress in navy, parents as well. Learn how to stand and how to sit. I do find there is a way everything must be done that is correct and any other way is wrong. I suppose it is part of the culture in a way. Everyone/thing should be be the same. Do not stand out.</p> <p>The school we chose though is more laid back and likes individuality somewhat more. </p> <p>Its a very different system to the UK, that is for sure. </p> <p>Synne, people here are very dressy. Its hard not to feel bad about yourself if you don't make an effort. He goes to the attached kindergarten but from April will be in elementary (April is start of school year here in Japan). It was my plan for him to go to the local elementary school but my husband wants to check this one out. Its an organised event for the kindergarteners and their parents to attend. Its a private school and i'm still unsure if he has to take an interview and test or whether he won't need to as he's coming up from the kindergarten. I suppose we'll find out tomorrow. Anyway since its not like formal but most parents are super dressy i'm going to go in smart casual. I wish I had a better bag but that's all i've got for now...just a planet organic shopping tote haha. </p>
