Oops, lost my post but really love 5 the most and 1 the second most. What a useful exercise to try a dressier skirt for daily wear - and so successful. It does seem like a slam dunk once you wrap your head around the idea. I could definitely benefit from an exercise like this - to get some of my dressier things into rotation. As long as it's comfortable and warm enough - why not!

Thanks Zaeobi. I find it much easier to pair skirts (especially in cold seasons) with pullover knitwear than with top + topper. My tops are all of a length to wear with pants, especially skinnies, so generally too long to look right with skirts -- and I don't tuck. Plus I'm not sure I fancy the texture of woven poplin/voile juxtaposed with stretch velvet. What tops do you wear with your brown pleated maxi skirt?

Some great choices here! My brown pleated maxi skirt is a workhorse for similar reasons - a slightly dressy fabric (satin finish) but easily machine washable & not too full of a silhouette (for wearing over & under tops).

Echoing @kkards that I'd like to see the teal cardigan open with something underneath - it looks like it has some gorgeous colours mixed into its pattern (raspberry & orange?) that you could perhaps pick out with a top?

Yes, I really like the texture of this sweater! And indeed, "my" burgundy skews to the raspberry side, especially for pieces that I wear near my face. Bottoms and footwear can be a little more flexible in shade. I have the Relaxed allele of the matchy-matchy gene so I'm happy building an outfit with different shades of a color that don't match exactly.

Joy, your cheetah skirt sounds like it was lovely! I am glad that my post prompted some ideas for you. Would love to see how you style your skirt if you play around with it!

Thank you, VioletMyra!

I am wearing Angie's pick outfit #5 today. I am enjoying this burgundy sweater -- it scratches some of that itch for "more drama" in silhouettes that I've been feeling. And the wrap style also creates a nice brooch-wearing opportunity (I love brooches, but the usual ways of wearing them often feel a bit classic or ladylike for my style), see attached photo

I also have a long velvet dusty burgundy skirt for winter that I need to style casually. Thank you for all the ideas. As an old person, my favorite winter skirt of all time was a soft cheetah print in wool. Kind of full and long. It looked great with boots.
I need to look at your outfits with a better screen, but what I can see, I like #4 and #5 best, #4 for the extra warmth. Thank you for this post.

Yes, it's fun to see what associations the idea of moor-tromping brings up! I am not sure I ever solved the problem of date-night shoes. The pandemic happened and now I haven't had a date night in years!

I like #9 best although the shoes are not really for moor-tromping ( loved that the comments brought both Wuthering Heights and Kate Bush into it: in 1979 I dressed up as her as I had similar wild long hair in those days!- hard to imagine I know!) But those are lovely dressy shoes! Reminds me of your years-ago search for date-night shoes…

Thanks all for your supportive comments! It's fun to see where lots of people's reactions align...and also where they differ. It's all good!

Just a couple of responses --

suntiger, interesting that you mention asymmetry, I wonder if the gentle asymmetry is why the sweater in #5 works better. Angie, I appreciate you calling out that outfit! It's super cozy and yes, nice to bring my tall black boots back into rotation.

Suz yes! The skirt almost does function like a pair of skinny jeans. Or non-bifurcated leggings, lol. It does have a side slit, so super practical for walking. I do wonder if I would find a fuller skirt a fussy esp. for working from home. (That said, if something with a fuller cut pops up and catches my eye for a reasonable price, I will probably give it a go.)

LaPed, yes re: having a holiday outfit in the quiver and ready to go. I've leaned pretty heavily on that green sweater for the last couple of years, and I still love it, but it will be nice to have a fresh way to wear it. I will keep experimenting with longer cardis with the skirt too, I think you're right that long-over-long has some potential!

Brooklyn yes, the skirt is washable! It's mostly poly, which I initially thought of as a downside (my inner fiber snob would prefer a silk-rayon velvet) but now I'm embracing the practicality of it. Great point that I can take advantage of the elastic waist to boss around the length -- I'll keep experimenting. Also, I have to say that I had your advice to pay attention to what I'm drawn to and just try it out in mind when I decided to go for this piece, so thank you!

Irina and Sal, don't worry, the cropped blue-gray cardi isn't going anywhere, I will keep experimenting with it!

Star would love to see the results if you do get a chance to play with your similar skirt!

I have two pairs of velvet pants! I wear them like regular pants - daily - dressed down. YES to wearing your velvet skirt the same way. Why not ;)

#5 is the KILLER standout to my eye. The drape of the tunic, its tonal colour, and the grounding and chic tall boots. WINNER!

#9 is my next fave. Pretty. Good proportions.

I don’t know what a moor-tromping skirt would look like, so I can’t comment on that aspect. But as a lover of maxi skirts, I can say that i really like this one. And the color is great
To my eye, #1, #6 & #7 work best because of the length of sweater/knit you’ve paired it with. For me #8 because you left the last 2 buttons undone also works, wondering what I would look like with a tee underneath and the cardigan wore completely undone. For me, #10 feels a little off as the textures of the sweater and the skirt seem to be competing, of course that could be just how it’s photographing, so take that with a grain of salt.

It is a great question to ask. Sometimes an unexpected piece comes along that really speaks to us and bridges the disconnect. This is such a wonderful skirt. I am very taken by # 4, with all the layers, which really does evoke moor stomping to me. The slim proportion of the skirt really works with this variety of tops you show. So versatile. And the texture really adds a lux touch without being fussy.

I agree with MsMaven that the reason #10 works so wonderfully is the drapiness of the top (while admitting that I personally have a sugar eye for the drapey-top-over-slim-skirt silhouette!)

I love your description of a moor tromping skirt.l don’t think that l have tromped any good moors recently but anyway l think that this is a really versatile length and shape of skirt. The velvet is warm for the winter and the fact that you have already worn it means it’s likely to be a stayer in your wardrobe.l particularly like it with blue top.

I love the idea of a moor-tromping skirt - so evocative of Wuthering Heights! However, I can understand that it may be far less practical in reality. This skirt looks like the perfect compromise between the romance of a luxe fabric and the practicality of a midi skirt with slim fit and silhouette.

My favorite is #7. I think it looks contemporary and fits well, loose on top of the skirt. I like the colors together, too. But I understand about feeling drafty in a cropped sweater. I only have a couple and wear them with something close fitted underneath.

That’s a great skirt. I would wear it for everyday wear too, as long as it’s washable. Velvet skirts, jeans and tops tend to be (but not velvet jackets alas).
I like all your stylings and I agree with Suz that the silhouette is similar to skinnies. Perhaps this is why it works so well for you?
Does it have an elastic waist? If so, you could play around with the proportions, especially when wearing the longer top in no 2. You could roll the skirt up a little at the waist band so it’s a little shorter. You might find just below the knee works better with a long top than mid calf. And with tall boots, you will still be covered.

Interesting observation about what you think you want to wear vs. what you actually want to wear! I do think the skirt is a great pick either way. My favorites are #s 5, 7 (although I hear you about how it doesn't feel right), 9 and 10. I would probably pick other favorites if I looked again.

Great skirt and I like your chosen look! I think they all work except 2-3 where the proportions seem a bit out of sync. Love 6-10 as well and the cropped grey cardigan is one of my favourites so sad that doesn’t feel right.

Elevated fussier fabrics are the ones I think I will wear but in reality I get more nervous about them and just don’t.

Another vote for #6 and #10 here. Those are fantastic. Having an easy, comfy sparkle+velvet outfit in the quiver for holidays is great. I also think the long cardi in #4 has tons of potential, perhaps with fewer layers underneath? I think that skirt, because it's quite streamlined, lends itself to longer layers on top.

It's an interesting question, what we think we want to wear versus what we actually want to wear (or end up wearing). I like this skirt on you, and I agree with your assessments of the outfits you've created with it. I really like the "classic dressy look" of number 9, as well as your comment about it. I have taken the same approach to dressy outfits--keeping some pieces in mind that can create a dressy enough look, but that I enjoy wearing for my casual life.

Nicely done!

Soft, cushy velvet is so nice on chilly days! My faves here are 8, 9 (which I think would also work dressed down with different shoes) & 10. I agree with Suz that the straightness contributes to the skirt’s wearability.

I’ve no idea what deal Kate’s singing about, but this always comes to mind when I think of the girl on the moors pic. https://genius.com/Kate-bush-r.....god-lyrics

Just like suntiger, #10 got me immediately. I think all versions look fine, but #10 really caught my eye. I think it's the lower, draped neckline, which of course makes it dressier, and not exactly for every day.

Funny how we save fabrics like velvet for "best." I think it deserves every day wear.
