I was in Texas (Lobbock and the Fortworth Dallas area) last week on a tour with our collage choir. Down there I saw a lot of jeans tucked into cowboy boots. It was an interesting twist on the jeans and boots look that is everywhere now.

Ha, that is so funny. I was actually going for something that was a cross between Uma and Audrey Tatou in Amelie (it was actually an angled bob, but you can't really tell in that picture). Some of my friends still look and dress like that, so at least I moved on at the right time.

Would be interesting for everyone to take pictures around their respective nearby cities and compare how people are dressing.

I think you look cute in that picture. I honestly don't mind the look. It was age and era appropriate, and the haircut was very cutting edge. It reminds me of Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction.

Just think what is cutting edge today, will be passé in 10 years.

heh, not so fabulous indeed. I was trying perhaps too hard to fit in with all the other art school students. Then I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's and Audrey Hepburn changed my life!

My hair is shoulder length with lots of layers, the shortest of which grazes the top of my ear, with sideswept bangs. Black hair has its ups and downs. I don't get any pretty highlights or variation in the color, which sometimes makes it feel flat and boring. Be happy with whatever you have....grass is always greener...blah blah blah.

Last time I was there was for college tours, meaning I wasn't much of a snappy dresser myself. I remember this gent I was once very fond of refused to show me a video of himself being interviewed on some local news program because he thought I would make fun of his socks and sandals, and he was from that area. I finally got him to show it to me, and he was right, I did make fun of him!

That tote is exactly the kind of thing I would have worn in high school and the first year of college. I actually have a great picture that really sums up my 18-19 year old self: http://img.photobucket.com/alb.....lasses.jpg

-Bruce Lee tshirt
-paint-covered pants
-cheap Chinatown ballet flats
-small pink messenger bag covered in pins
-obnoxious camera angle
-horrible bangs

So in summary, who was I to judge?

Now I think I'm better poised to take a people-watching tour of America

That sounds like a date! Ha! And I like the sound of that bag (for a teenybopper).

I cringe daily at inappropriate pant lengths. It is THE biggest fashion faux pas on the street and my biggest pet peeve.

If you guys ever come back to Boston, we will have to go people watching!

I do think the majority of people in my line of sight were tourists. It was too windy and cold to really walk around, and we got a late start. But even the people who seemed to live and/or work in the city were dressed very casually. Not just "dress down Friday" kind of dressing.

My daughter, Mia, was spotting and pointing out some really fun bags though. Her favourite was a tote bag that had images of french fries all over and they had conversation bubbles saying "bonjour" and the flip side of the tote had tacos that were saying "hola". Cute, but definately not high fashion!

Oh, and Angie, you would have been cringing at the too short pants. Not just a little bit short--but showing the sock short.

Mayapple, When you went to Cambridge, didn't you find the residents to be completely careless? We drive thru Cambridge to get into Boston Proper, and it's chock full of hippy dippys with wool socks and Birkenstock sandals.

This was interesting Nicole. I didn’t go to the waterfront when I was in Boston a few years ago. We stayed close to Newbury street and had friends in Cambridge, so we commuted between the two spots while we were there. I thought that the style quotient was high but boring. No edge. Preppy, very preppy. Women were generally well groomed and modernly classic. Quite proper. No nike airs in sight! SO different to Seattle.

I enjoyed this post Nicole. It's nice to read something other than the usual "what shoes do I wear with this?" kind of post (not that there is anything at all wrong with that, just saying it's something new). Interestingly one of my friends just moved to Boston and told me she feels more pressured (which is probably not the right word) to step it up, and I also tend to associate refinement with Bostonian style--less funky and smarter than New York. I'm not completely sure why I think that, exactly, so I could be wrong. I guess it's silly to expect that everyone is going to be chic and hip and snazzy at all times though, and I should probably know that well. Some of the things I see in NY are truly awful.

The other day I saw this woman who was wearing some leopard print pants with these strange ruffled tiers below the knee that gave them a bellbottom silhouette. She was also plus size--not that these pants would look good on anyone of any size, but I tend to think plus women look better when the clothes are tailored and close to the body.

Does anyone else read the Sartorialist? That is my other favorite style (and photography) blog. I realized recently that reading it has caused me to assume that everyone in Milan looks like a runway model. I wonder how true that is!

My family and I went into Boston today. I though I'd share some of the fashion sightings I personally witnessed. There really wasn't anything exciting going on. Maybe most of the people there were tourists or college students.

Jeans were definately the prevailing fashion statement. Almost EVERYONE I saw was wearing jeans--men and women alike. The younger crowd was sporting skinnies. Women in their late 3o's and 40's were wearing boot cuts, and few wide legged trouser style denims were spotted. My husband commented on the plethora of Uggs. (A style that neighter he or I are fond of). People were still wearing them with their jeans tucked in, and a few had their boot cuts over the Uggs.

I saw a few colorful wool coats. (Granted it was VERY cold and VERY windy on the waterfront today). But most of the outerwear was black, brown and white. A few women were wearing precarious high heels that looked out of place. If you have never been to Boston, it's a total pedestrian city and many of the walk ways are cobblestone--not high heel friendly.

And I swear, if I saw one more woman in ill fitting jeans with athletic (gear) sneakers on, I was going to pull a Stacy and Clinton.

I was totally unimpressed and I honestly expect to see more fashion in a big city. I'm sure if I had made my way over to Newbury Street with all the designer shops, I'd see the complete opposite. (over dressed and too much bling). But since this was a family trip to the Aquarium, we spent most of the day on the waterfront--which is much more casual. And on our way back to the parking garage--my husband spotted a Crocs store and joked that we "pop in for a bit". If looks could kill! (He didnt' make the same suggestion as we walked past the Loft).
