Una - it was your "failures" post that gave me some clarity so you should take some credit in this! We can't learn if we can't accept when something doesn't work...and then move on.

MaryK, Ornella, Alicat - thank you for your "kudos"!

Rachylou - I draw the line at wearing clothes the rats got at!!! (lol)

Suz, Claire - you've totally nailed what I'm striving for: a closet with no useless stuff taking up space. I want to be able to stick my hand in my ridiculously small closet and know I'm going to love what I pull out. It doesn't have to be designer or expensive - but it does have to fit well, be flattering colour wise, and make me feel good. If it doesn't do that, then I'm losing it and moving on. I have had some successes lately and those successes are helping to give me some idea of what's working but the failures can give me an idea of what isn't working - and that's just as important.

So ladies - keep the truth coming if it doesn't look good - I can take it!

Now this is great! Instead of just saying, Oh that didn't work like I thought - or worse - I look terrible or I can't put an outfit together - you took it apart mentally and totally figured out what was and wasn't working and why! Sometimes it can be as trite as 'this isn't me' which is totally valid!! I have several times had a techinically succesful outfit that was not a success *on me*. I agree with Claire, great attitude!

You are one smart cookie Shannon, and a fast learner. I hope to be this emotionally detatched with my failures too: if it doesn't work, lose it and move on. You've had some great successes lately too (like every darn day it seems) so let's not forget those! I love your atttitude!

Oooh, I love this! You are so thoughtful! The idea of positive failure is very near and dear to my own heart of late, as well, as I try things out and see how I FEEL in them as well as how they look.

FWIW, I agree with you about these colours; they are not your best. And although you nailed the style, it doesn't feel like "you" somehow. It's true that it is less figure flattering than some of the other looks you posted, but it's definitely not bad. The thing is, if you are aiming for GREAT, this isn't it. It's probably a combination of factors, the colours AND the proportions not being quite your best, that makes you feel this way.

I like your clear headed decision to rethrift. This is what will get us all towards the closets we are after. No useless stuff taking up space!

That's cool! I'm just starting to think about colors worn near the face. That is something I've learned about on YLF. Also, I like that you're going to re-thrift the skirt. Personally, I can get stubborn. I take it as a challenge - I'll make it look good if it bankrupts me or the rats eat it, stashed in my mother's basement! LOL.

Great.

I sometimes go through similar thought process. it's fantastic feeling to get in tune with how the outfit actually feels.

Positive failure - I like that.

Absolutely! Learning from your "failures" is invaluable - that's why I posted my thread on a year of failures. FWIW, I think you looked lovely and far from frumpy, but how you feel matters just as much.

So today's outfit (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....position-4) was an interesting experiment in silhouettes. And as the day wore on, became obvious to me, a failure. Now I’m not upset that it was a failure and in fact, it was a strange kind of “positive failure”.

I learned that the cognac colour of the jacket is fine with my hair/skin colouring as long as there is something else with it that does work with my hair/skin – the jacket is a “keeper”. The chocolate brown of the tank underneath does nothing for me and I felt “colourless” all day. It’s going – I don’t see it working with anything else either.

The skirt was thrifted so I have no investment in it. As a stand-alone item, I think it’s a beautiful skirt. But not for me. It’s too long and makes my legs look even shorter than they really are. Add in the flowy volume and I felt completely “schlumpy”. The colours are lovely together but again, not good colours for me. I’ve mentally reviewed what else I have in my wardrobe that could work with this and I have nothing. It’s going to be re-thrifted.

I think any time I learn something from trying different colours, silhouettes, shapes, etc, then I am making progress in my style journey. Maybe it’s a case of learning by elimination. Plus I still had fun trying it!
