Okay @suntiger @thecat I just want and read the harmony articles you pointed me too. How intriguing! I never thought if this - but intuitively I do like more texture and sheen with my curly hair. I love this idea and will keep it in mind when choosing outfits from now on...

Fabbers! I'm so sorry; I posted this and went MIA due to a tornado of work, home and extra curricular commitments. What kind, insightful and thoughtful comments!

Lisa, Cardiffgirl , Viva - I never thought of strong facial features as a plus (I always wanted delicate pixie features!) But what an insightful comment that this may allow me to play with avant garde looks. I may start playing in that direction...

A lot of you said that avant garde and draped looks may not photograph well because of their movement - you are absolutely right! I'll have to keep this in mind.

kkards - it thought the same thing. A fitted and less layered top could work with the fuller pants.

Vix , Staysfit - what a fascinating thought. I never thought about horizontal breaks, but now that you mention it, you are right - i don't look good with a lot of them, it makes me look all choped up. Maybe that's why I'm loving tonal looks lately. I'll have to think about this one...

Shevia - You are my style inspiration I LOVE how you layer volume over volume and that's what inspired me to go more in that direction here!

The Cat, Suntiger - I had never thought of harmony before - what an interesting concept! I'll have to do a dip dive...

unfrumped - that is a SMART caution. I need to keep this in mind...

Just great! I also love the gray sweater on you.

I have learned a lot from pictures. But I agree with caution when “ movement “ is lost. That affects some of my outfits with wider legs or longer skirts that may look pretty wide or baggy in a static view but have a lot of drape or swoosh.

For me it is about not taking on too MANY , or too high a % of wardrobe, trend or unconventionally flattering items of outfits because that can be exhausting ( as some require carefully combining the right pieces and accessories)— so need enough comfort- go- to outfits that don’t require too much energy on everyday, morning rush basis , stay calm in comfort zone when best, and then have some energy for outfit creation on a weekend or “ slow” morning to spice things up, or for an evening out,

Roxanna, your wardrobe and taste is impeccable and these outfits absolutely work for you! Outfit pictures are helpful but I wonder what would happen if we could take mini video clips of ourselves to catch some motion as well?

I read what Vix wrote with interest because she and Chiara(if I remember correctly) helped me with the same line of thought some time ago and it truly changed and probably improved the way I dressed. (Thanks!). Despite my height, horizontal lines breaking up my body do not flatter. Like you, I prefer conventionally flattering outfits, but crave the variety of avant-garde outfits mixed into my wardrobe. I have learned to keep horizontal brakes to a minimum, and contrast levels low when I am creating my outfits. It seems like your picture review has helped you gravitate to avant-garde outfits that are tonal, draped and layered. It makes them less overwhelming on your petite frame.

Oh how this post filled me with glee! Well your hair is just even more fab in every picture. And we are hair/soul sisters. I understand you completely about the tension between flattery and attraction to the avant garde. I am also petite and small boned, with my weight around the middle and yet I am constantly trying to wear volume on volume, or wide volume on the bottom looks that basically are the opposite of conventionally flattering. #8 is gorgeous and conventionally flattering on you (and then some), but the boots and lipstick and dare I say hair! make it also edgy and interesting. But I like all of these, the black pants with the oxfords make me want to go polish my oxfords right now!

Roxanna, from the pictures I have seen of you, you always look wonderful and yes, luxe. I do think taking pictures to study and learn from is very helpful. You have identified some styles that really suit your body type. That is always good, but I also think your attitude of trying other styles and shapes is good, too! When you have fun and feel confident in your clothing choices, you will always be stylish!
Exactly - love that statement Roxanna.

I think it is good to understand your most flattering looks - so you can understand how to break the rules and have fun - and make it work... I think textures and colours and silhouette all interact together so you might not be able to wear an avante garde piece in a stiff fabric - in a soft weave it may be gorgeous etc..

And being happy with a smile is the best look of all.

Roxanna, you look great in all these outfits!

I so agree with Suntiger about the fascinating HARMONY between the textures in your outfits and your gorgeous hair. This reminds me of these interesting articles written by Imogen Lamport at the insideoutstyle blog:

Hi Roxanna --

I'm just here for the hair (kidding) -- I missed the big chop! Love all your earlier variants too so just adding this one into the lineup.

The new cut adds the edge you might feel sad about back-burnering in clothing. Agreeing with Sara that 2-D is quite different from 3-D and the "magic of movement" gets lost.

[ I feel your pain as I love a lot of crazy volume but can look quite swamped in it.]

Final thought is one that's been discussed on the board before -- some of us suit longer lines with few horizontal breaks, some the inverse. Sometimes this matches our personality and we go with it, sometimes it clashes and we fight it. To me #1 looks fantastic on you (and would it the top layer were a print, or a color-color).

yes, photo's have taught me a lot as well... especially regarding when its time to let something go...

RE this statement:

Well, due to my body type (petite, curvy short waisted pear) - there is a relatively small number of things that flatter me (fit and flare dresses, midi skirts, thin knits, Blazers, skinny jeans.)

I am going to disagree with you...for example I think you look great in the pants in #5...totally flattering on you...but I think the total outfit could look more flattering with more structured blazer and/or top....

I have learned a lot from taking pictures of myself , although I only do it once in awhile. My wardrobe simply isn't that interesting to take pictures every day and I'm wearing black most of the time too Anyways, I agree that the grey sweater is outstanding - really a perfect piece for you. You have the strong facial features and hair to support more avant garde pieces, and should definitely explore that look for yourself.

What a great post, Roxanna!
I also take a lot of outfit pictures, although not every day, and some things have become clear to me too. I can relate to what you have found out about conventional flattery and avant-garde experimenting... I am an emotional dresser and I feel a bit bored if I wear a similar formula too often, then I through in some experimenting in the mix. I am generally fine with JFE for the sake of having fun.
All the outfits here are great, luxe and fantastic colours and textures on you. My favourite is the first outfit - beautiful and it suits you sooo well. Lovely hair and makeup!

I like all these outfits on you although I agree that the last one is the most conventionally flattering. I take outfit pictures every day and I agree that there's a lot to be learned from seeing all your outfits that way. However, keep in mind that layered and drapey looks don't always photograph well. Some outfits look better in motion and that can't be captured by the camera. It sounds like that may be an issue for you with the avant garde looks that you like.

Along with my capsule wardrobe experiment for Q1, I decided to take daily outfit pics to understand what really looked good on me. I learned a lot of Things from this - some good, some not so good:

The good: I am reluctant to throw away things, so the photos helped me see what really needed to go - jeans bagging out at the knees, worn looking tops, etc. My key style word is Luxe so I need things to look fresh and polished and not shabby.

The not so good: I realized that from an aesthetic standpoint, I like myself in conventionally flattering looks that show off my best points. I feel like I look best in these.
What's bad about this? Well, due to my body type (petite, curvy short waisted pear) - there is a relatively small number of things that flatter me (fit and flare dresses, midi skirts, thin knits, Blazers, skinny jeans.) While I like wearing these things, I also like more avant garde, slouchy things and lots of layering that often overwhelms my frame. And I like to experiment, though to my eye on the photos or rarely works out.

What have I learned?
Some invaluable things for me: I need structure on top, scarves need to be streamlined, I need to cater to my short waist. But some rules I will throw out the window in favor of just having fun, dammit.
