About two years ago, I moved from a very cold/wet climate to a very hot/dry one, and went from working full-time to being a SAHM with a little bit of at-home contract work. I love my life set-up, but restyling my wardrobe has been an uphill battle. I find dressing for a desert climate *very* hard because I'm used to spending most of the year covered up in layers -- sweaters, boots, flannel, scarves, hats, etc.

Most of the year here my favourite wardrobe pieces are totally irrelevant -- I simply can't wear wool when it's 100F out. I even have some heavier cotton garments that feel itchy when it's too hot. I do wear jeans and chinos almost year round--partly so as not to look like a tourist, and partly because I hate sitting down on hot leather car seats and scorching the backs of my legs!

For my hot-climate wardrobe, the items I find indispensable are:

*A lightweight linen blazer. Mine is navy blue, thrifted, and from Eileen Fisher. It is so soft, cool, and looks great without ironing. It adds just enough polish over jeans and t-shirt, and I also like to wear it over dresses or skirts so that I have a set of pockets -- very important when out with the baby and the dog! I'm thinking about adding a linen-cotton utility jacket in green or grey for some variety this fall.

*Long sleeve button down shirts in cotton and linen. I've added a white shirt, a pinstriped shirt, and a chambray shirt that I wear absolutely all the time. They afford better sun protection than plain t-shirts, are cooler than knits, and look more polished. Triple win!

*Flat shoes in fun colours, that can be worn with or without socks. Okay, I have a pair of black Chacos that I wear much of the time because they are perfect for hiking and chores in hot weather. For going-out, I really prefer closed-toe shoes, since I'm not a big pedicure person I now have fuchsia ballet flats, mustard oxfords, and striped espadrilles, none of which would have seen much wear when I lived in the Northeast and spent most of the year in boots, but all of which get worn year-round here in the desert.

*Cropped leggings. I don't wear them much during the height of the summer, but for transitional weather (like right now), they are perfect with tunics, dresses, or mini skirts, and make it possible for me to wear skirts while chasing after a toddler!

I love that you have found your style. I am lucky enough to work from home and I find that I get "dressed" to work at my desk. If I do not put on an outfit and do my hair and make up, I do not focus. I recently did a closet clean out and realized that I like simple clothes that have style without a lot of fuss. Once I am in my ensemble for the day, I can run also few errands to break up the day and don't feel like I'm out in my work/laundry/lounge clothes!

Over the past few years I've tried to relax my going-out clothes and spiff-up my at-home clothes. I really do wear cargo capris or yoga pants (or thicker sweatpant-type yoga pants) at home almost all the time, and I have added nicer shirts and tanks and cardigans to go with them. I rarely get more dressed up than nice jeans when going out, although I keep dresses and skirts (not many) for weddings and funerals and dressier occasions. I have found that JJill works well for me and holds up well to washing. Also, since you mention you cook a lot, I have discovered big aprons in the past year (how I didn't realize that's what I needed for 25 years, I don't know) and they give me the freedom to wear nicer clothes at home. I'm working on building my shoe wardrobe to include more comfy flats that look appropriate with yoga pants/sweats, because I do run out to the cleaners or post office dressed like this. We were in St. Paul, Minnesota, again this past weekend and I saw so many women who looked well-put-together, but were essentially just wearing nicer versions of athletic wear. It inspired me to find some tunics that will work with my fleece-lined tights for winter! I saw one woman, mid-60s or older, who wore Sorel boots, black tights, a black quilted skirt, a black zip-necked fleece top, and a scarf, and she looked wonderful. I thought "well, I can do THAT."

Thanks Diane

Yes, I need variety. And while I like variety in colours & patterns, I like variety in silhouette too. But I like this variety without any confusion!

This did take me time and ALOT of trial & error. I had to identify 'casual silhouettes I like at home' and 'smart casual outfits I want to wear outside the home, or to meet friends casually'.

I didn't want to open my cupboard every morning and feel like - "oh, here are so so many casual options. What shall I wear today?" That kind of overwhelms me. Forcing myself to wear something that is technically casual but is "feeling" wrong is even more overwhelming! (Example - skirts, jeans and casual trousers).

These 4 silhouette just *feel* right - for me. And it does make it a lot easier to dress everyday.

It's been really helpful to read everyone's thoughts on at-home/ lounge/ cosy wear.
Maneera, having your four silhouettes must make dressing easy. I like the smart stripe shirts and shorts you've pictured.
I have a long hot summer just starting. I don't wear long pants at all for casual wear in summer (though I will wear them to work in air con) so it will be shorts and light dresses for me.

Popping back to say that your 'uniform at home' idea has really got me thinking overnight. So has Suz about needing more variety in silhouettes and not just a change in pattern and colour. You've thought out a great range of silhouettes for yourself Manny.

Smittie, you make some excellent points. Yes, i quite agree that it all boils down to durability and washability of fabrics, more than anything else.

Jenn, you would wear jogger pants with a woven top or striped tee so very very well! It's an outfit that would fit right into your lifestyle! I do understand your hassle of having to leave the house almost everyday for errands. In such a case, I think as long as your clothes are clean, just adding accessories should work. After all, errands are errands. If you look presentable, that should be good enough. This would be true for the post office/grocery runs you make. Of course, you can wear smarter clothes when you're going to school/sports practices. I'm thinking that adding a scarf, necklace, shoes should make any home wear outfit fit enough to go outside the house.

Maneera, the silhouettes are great, and I particularly love the t-shirt dress you wore the other day.
I don't like wearing smart casual at home either...I like to wear silk and wool out, and those just aren't practical for hanging around with the kids. Dresses also don't work as there are many non-upright situations for me

What I've found is that the silhouette doesn't matter at home (except for dresses-skirts). What matters is the durability and washability of the clothes. So cotton/lycra blend jersey t-shirts, chambray, jean, non-snagging cotton sweaters--this all works at home.

So awesome that you've figured out these formulas that work for you. I'm particularly drawn to that first one with the joggers. I'm right there with you on not being able to wear jeans in the summer. With highs regularly falling between 95-100 (35-38) in the hotter months, jeans are rarely, if ever, happening for me in July/August.

Our lifestyles are similar (right down to the problem with cooking/food stains) but, reading over your rationale, I realized there's a big difference in my own life and that's that my at-home days aren't really just at-home days. At the very least, I have to pop out to the post office two or three times a week (I usually walk there), to the grocery store and library at least once, and to any number of sport/school practices for the kiddo. It's pretty seldom I have a day where I don't have to go out for one thing or another. I'm still thinking about how I'm supposed to dress for all of that plus cooking/cleaning when I don't want to change clothes three times a day.

I really like Diana's comment about how loungewear helps differentiate from work life/home life - I think that's pretty much my philosophy too. Like you, I really enjoy wearing tunic tops and leggings around the house and I'm getting ready to invest in some joggers for my loungewear capsule. Stylish comfort seems to be the common theme throughout all of your uniforms and sounds incredibly practical for your lifestyle.

One thing I've realized is that I do need loungewear that makes me feel good and is comfortable. I can put on a ratty tee and shorts, but I don't feel confident in that outfit. Yet when I put on a slouchy, soft sweater and leggings I feel so much better. A lot of your uniforms are ones I enjoy and wear a lot too so thanks for the accidental advice :)

A lot of attention gets put on the right clothes for work, date night and weekend errands, but loungewear often gets ignored. I think its worth it to invest in items that fit your lifestyle and make you feel great at home, even if nobody sees you.

It sounds as if you've made some super important discoveries for the life you lead, Maneera, and I think you have a TON of variety with 4 excellent silhouettes and a bunch of different pieces that work for each. Also, I agree you need that variety. Your warm season is as long as my cold season. I understand all too well how looooooong it seems and how wearing the same thing all the time can drag you to the pit of gloom after a few months. Been there. Done that. UGH.

I have less variety for my summer at home wear uniform -- it's basically shorts with tee or woven top (usually sleeveless), or (sometimes, more rarely) a tube skirt or knit dress.

There is some overlap between capsules for me in summer, particularly of tops. I also do go out of my home in shorts, frequently, in fact, but not for activities like lunch or dentist or meetings. For those I wear smart casual.

It's winter where I still struggle, and since that is my longest season, I really need to step up my game. Like you, I crave comfort at home (esp. in winter) and like Sterling, I seek COZY at home in the winter (whereas, like Joy, I vastly prefer STRUCTURE outside the home!)

So far, my typical winter at home wear has been jeans or ponte pants, a pullover, sometimes layered over a shirt or tee, often a scarf, socks and slippers (or even booties...just so I can wear some of my lovely footwear instead of leaving it in the closet during the entire snow boot season!!). I have lots and lots of variety within that silhouette. But, as I discovered last year, I actually experience the feeling of variety more from a change in silhouette than from a change in colour or pattern. I like a change in colour, enjoy it, but it doesn't feel "different."

I tried the leggings/ tunic look (and have an new version to try this winter) -- but frankly, it's not as flattering or comfortable on me.

I have a pair of joggers but they feel a bit too unstructured for anything but true "lounge."

I have a cozy knit dress or two, but my kitty gets his claws into my tights!

What's a girl to do? I'm working hard to figure this out, or possibly just accept it and see about adding more variety elsewhere. It's a puzzle, for sure!

You are doing so well with your wardrobe. Glad you are in a good place.

We have long hot Summers too Maneera, and at home I usually wear a sleeveless cotton top or cami with an above knee skirt. At the moment it's a light weight denim skirt. When it gets really hot and humid in Jan-Feb, I wear slip dresses. I mostly go bare foot except for when I go out into the yard, when I'll wear rubber flip flops. I don't ever wear these things outside the house or yard though even though they wouldn't look out of place where I live. They're for relaxing at home after work, or when I'm staying home at the weekend. I suppose I could say that I have an 'at home' capsule.

In Winter it's usually leggings, knitwear and always tall uggboots. I don't find jeans comfy enough for relaxing around the house.

I'm very much like you when it comes to loungewear. I almost always change out of my smart casual "leaving the house" clothes the minute I step in the door. For me, there are a couple of reasons. First, which doesn't apply on work-from-home days obviously, is that I like to maintain the difference between work vs home and the outside world vs my personal space. Second, I do things like cook and clean when I get home so I don't want to ruin my nice clothes, plus things like scarves get in the way. Third, I spend a lot of time at home actually lounging around (so the term is accurate for me!), on the couch or the bed or wherever, and certain clothes (like bras and belts and for me even jeans) are fine when standing/sitting but not so comfy when lying down. Fourth, I never wear shoes (or socks) at home and I don't want to shred my pants hems, etc. My loungewear is all things that look ok barefoot or with slippers.

I admit I don't care nearly as much how I look when I'm at home so I'll happily wear slightly ratty or old loungewear. I'm perfectly happy with this and don't feel "un-fab" at all. (This is just to say that if you're ok with something like that, no need to change just because of the prevailing mood on the forum or whatever!) My loungewear is mostly loose dresses (no waist and washable), soft pants (like track pants or looser yoga pants) and tees, or jersey skirt and tank/tee. For some reason I've never liked wearing leggings as loungewear. I think I just prefer looser things, plus I still mostly think of leggings as hosiery. I also have some cozy cardigans for colder days.

Sleepwear is separate. 90% of the time I shower at night (the exception is occasionally on weekends when I workout first thing in the morning, in which case I'll wait to shower after working out), so i only put on pjs after my shower, which is usually close to bedtime. I'll keep the pjs on in the morning to have coffee and breakfast, unless I'm cooking something splattery or smelly (like bacon, again usually only on weekends).

I work from home rarely enough that it's still a luxury, so I'm perfectly ok with spending the day in loungewear in that case. If it becomes more regular, I'd probably make more of an attempt to actually get dressed....

Hehe..I sort of have a foot in both yours and Lisa's camp. I spend a lot of time at home as I work from home, but I do have clients visit for appointments and because clothes and sewing is my business, I kind of have to look the part, but there are days when it's just me and the sewing machine and my cat, so I just wear what's clean and comfy. I do often think about the nice things in my wardrobe and that if I'm not going to wear them at home they'll just wither away, so I sometimes make more of an effort even when it's just me.

I like all of your casual at-home-uniform ideas Manny and I think it sound like it's going to work well for you. We are all so different and have different needs and sensibilities.

Caveat....I have always for some reason had an aversion to the words 'lounge wear' ...because I never wear whatever 'lounge wear' is. So, I won't get started on that subject lol :D

Maneera, I'm another who has two distinct capsules for in and out of the house. Like you, I am home-based (now retired) plus I have a large dog to walk, a country environment - think muddy tracks and fields - and am often doing DIY jobs and painting around the house. I wear practical, basic jeans and tees/sweaters that are clean and presentable - to start with, at least! - wear light make-up and make sure my hair is tidy. This is how my friends and neighbours see me on an everyday basis around the immediate vicinity, but, again like you, I would always change to go further afield, except in a dire emergency. Oh, yes, and I always change into something nice but comfortable in the evening.

Jaileen - my real life is much like yours. We do socialize but it's usually getting together with friends at home. We have dogs; all our friends have dogs too. I do wear smart casuals when I have company, though. Glad to know you also choose comfortable, ordinary clothes for everyday life!

I would also like to add that I don't 'pop' out anywhere outside the house in my everyday wear. Only two people actually see what I wear - the lady who comes to clean my house everyday, and the security guard of my building who sees me for a minute when I step outside at 11:30am to go to a green patch next to my building where my dog can relieve herself. We're back home in under 5 minutes. By the time my husband gets home from work, I'm always in track wear as that's the time I go for my long walk. Rarely I do go out to get some groceries, but that usually happens when I'm on my way back from my walk.

At home I'm always dressed, but usually not in nice clothes. I have two dogs who need walking, and chores such as gardening. cooking, laundry, etc. Most of that wrecks nice clothes. So depending on my plans for the day, I'll put on a nicer newer version or an older rattier version of the same outfit - shorts, sleeveless top in summer; jeans, long sleeve top, sweatshirt or sweater in winter.

I may still be buying clothes for my imaginary life which, apparently, involves going out to lunch more than I actually do. My real life is mostly getting together with friends and our dogs. Fun, but dirty.

Thanks Sterling, I'm so glad you found out what silhouettes work for your Cozy Capsule. Since I am at home ALL THE TIME, I don't have a cozy capsule. But if I did go to office, I suppose mine would be a lot like yours.

Lisa, I so know what you mean! Yes, I have a lot of pretty tops & sweaters too. I do sometimes think - if I don't wear them at home, where else am I going to wear it?! But sadly, they just don't work for my everyday life. I would HATE to see a pretty sweater with holes after cuddling with my dog, or with disgusting oil stains after cooing. Did I mention my dog sheds like CRAZY! Her hair is everywhere, and cover my clothes by evening.

My solution - stop buying pretty things to wear outside the house. First do justice to WHAT I HAVE! It's working....I think!

At this point, I want to clarify that my at-home wear is NOT old, baggy, stained or faded. I throw out clothes that look worn. Everything looks immaculate and pretty.....at least when I put it on Another reason I wear different clothes for smart casuals can be that I love variety. I love nicer dresses and skirts and trousers and jeans. Since I can't wear them at home, I simply wear them on weekends as smart casuals. Also, I do have ALOT of clothes. A lot. I have tons to choose from and try to wear everything. On my last count, I had 280 items of clothing in my summer wardrobe. Apart from 10 pairs of jeans and 6 pairs of ponte leggings, all the rest will be switched for winters. That's probably a big reason why my everyday casual wear and smart weekend casual wear is not the same.

Thanks for your inputs, Dee. I know that a lot of fabbers are happy to wear the same clothes at home as well as casual outings. I did try the same - it did not work for me. I think the biggest difference here is (1) Climate (2) Lifestyle.

My climate really makes it impossible to wear jeans at home during the hot season. Unlike most of you, my 'hot' season goes on and on and on from March to October. I could actually wear dresses and shorts and nothing else throughout these months....but that bores me....and sometimes I do like to cover my legs. Enter - jogger style pants & leggings. However, these are all really lose silhouettes and are (to me) only JFE. Fitted clothes are not comfy for all day wear. When I go out, I like more structure and polish in my outfits, which is why I wear smarter clothes....clothes I can't possibly bear to wear from 9am to 6pm, even if I wanted to.

Secondly - lifestyle. I have never managed to cook without staining my clothes. If you eat Indian curry (or cook it), you'd know that our food is messy to cook! Too many spices, too much to do. It's not simple cooking. I do wear an apron, but I still manage to get turmeric and chili stains on my neckline or sleeves. Bear in mind; I am a sloppy person Stains love me! I tried to wear smarter tops around the house but gave up when 2 of them *died* the very first time ( a white tee was ruined when my dog jumped on me and stained my sleeve plus made a tiny hole with her nail; one pink top had a huge oil splash when I had a kitchen accident and spilled oil on myself, which soaked through the apron and onto my clothes).

I work from home too, and my days are a lot like yours. I spend about half the week in my office, and the other half out on calls and sales appointments. I am always dressed and made up at home - although what i'm wearing is dictated by what's on the schedule that day. At the very least, I'm in leggings and a tunic-ish top or sweater or jeans and a sweater or tshirt. I could not care less about setting up a capsule or making sure I have variety for this part of my wardrobe - I have lots to choose from in my closet even though it's pretty repetitive. It doesn't bother me to wear the same types of things over and over at home.

As to Sterling's and your comments about saving her/your better clothes and not wearing them around the house .....I do that too, but do think if I never wear these new lovely sweaters at home, where else am i going to wear them? And why not wear them if it's a day of working at my desk ? What I wear greatly influences my mood and demeanour, and if I have to pop out to the post office or the grocery store or whereever - I'm ready to go! This new theory of mine grew out of my first year here on YLF where after the YLF freshman college purge, I realized I had so many really nice pieces that were hardly worn yet were now not current and thus ready to donate. Now if I own it, I'm wearing it

Sorry to ramble - I'm still on my first cup of coffee for the day ;)

This is interesting and upon reading it I realize that I have a wardrobe hole for comfortable/warm and stylish loungewear. I tend to throw on some ugly old sweatpants that have hot glue stains on them and an equally ugly comfy top. I feel less than fab in this little number .
My criteria are warmth/comfort and then style. Wonder where I can find this ??

Congratulations on finding four great silhouettes to meet your needs. Yay for you.

Your comment "I don't want to wear my smart casuals at home. I'm neither comfortable nor at ease if I fear I'll ruin the clothes" exemplifies my life. I feel exactly the same way and that explains why I dress the way I do behind closed house doors. All my really great clothes sit in my closet and I wear my oldest pieces around the house. It defies logic and embarrasses me to my core. I am actively trying to change both my logic and my practices.

To do that I am following your example. I too am identifying silhouettes that work for me. Unlike you, I don't crave variety. I am quite happy to wear the same thing over and over and over again.

I admit to still working toward identifying these preferred silhouettes or uniforms. Your post helps a lot. Carter's post helped immensely
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ng-the-bar. Anne's post was especially enlightening because I realized I didn't so much crave a loungewear capsule so much as a cosy capsule http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-semantics.

I am still trying to write out my preferred uniform. I think it will be based more on slim fit ponte pants then leggings. During the winter months, I really love a soft sweater to envelop me.

It is really good to remember that preferred uniforms can change seasonally. This was yet another lesson I had to learn at YLF. For example, I love sweater dressing in the winter months. I love pressed, sleeveless button downs in the summer months. In fact, I prefer sleeveless everything in the summer months. The bottom part remains slip fit in the most season appropriate fabric. Again, remember I don't need a lot of variety in my life. I am happy just feeling good in my clothes.

Take care, Manerra.

Manny, this is very interesting to me. It sounds like several people here have a specific capsule for doing things around the house (which may or may not also be their loungewear capsule). I work from home sometimes and generally wear similar things to what I'd wear out of the house. Smart causal, which sometimes that means jeans and others joggers or leggings. I don't have kids or pets, so maybe that's the difference, but I don't have a problem doing laundry or cooking/eating in my smart causal items. I just throw an apron on when needed.

I do have a small lounge capsule of sweats but mostly those get relegated to days I don't feel well or days when it's freezing out and I want extra-cozy or warm items.
