Interesting.

I don't like my local Nordie's. It's nothing like any of you are saying. I just don't like it and it's hard to articulate why, but I'll try:

They have the "magic mirrors" which are annoying. The dressing rooms are sumptuous but dark so I can't really tell what anything looks like. Sales assistance is either nonexistent, or overly solicitous. But most of all, they have only a fraction of the stock they have online. 9 out of 10 trips, I have a sales assistant usher me over to a computer to pull up an item online "that they can order me." D'oh... I can do that from home myself!

So I rarely go there, not even to return things, because it's quicker to return by mail than to drive there, find parking, walk forever to the store schlepping my returns. By which time I'm too tired to walk around and try anything else on.

I do think Nordie's has the online model down, which I much appreciate. Maybe that's where their emphasis and strategy is, instead of B&M? I wouldn't blame them, though there's always going to be a place in my life for a B&M shop.

They did just add a service desk at my Nordstrom, but it's just not the same as knowing the store manager was right there at the service area, and that she was backed up by a staff of caring people. I don't know if there even is a store manager anymore.

I was disappointed when they eliminated the service desk for picking up and returning items bought online and picked up in the store. Part of the whole appeal was that you didn't have to go into the store, flag down a sales associate and wait while they search in the back for your order.
Even with that change, and it's a big thing for me because 90% of my shopping is online, their customer service is far superior to every other store I've ever bought from. I've made some delayed returns of expensive items, received price adjustments, etc, and they're the best.

I miss the pianos.
Currently the downtown Seattle Flagship is undergoing massive renovations. Every time I go there now I get lost as they're constantly changing the layout as they work on sections.
They're bringing in some more smaller designers in some departments, eg Rachel Comey; but in others are more mainstream and heavy on the Nordstrom brand.

Ours got rid of the customer service area, replaced it with a service desk but then stopped staffing it except during NAS. I find the customer service in some departments worse than the others. Top shop comes to mind.

My local Nordstrom opened 4 years ago and there's been a distinct change since then in terms of merchandise and staffing. I attributed it to the fact the store has very little traffic and is in an odd market where it's probably hard to pin down the customer. But perhaps some if the issues others mention above are at play.

The Nordstrom in my old town renovated a couple years ago and got rid of all the checkouts entirely, expecting the employees to check people out wherever with the handheld point of sale tablets. It was very awkward for both parties, because customers didn't know where to wait for someone to help them, if everyone was busy or somewhere else, and employees didn't have anywhere to put items while they were checking someone out. They've put some kiosks back, but they're smaller than they used to be.

The Nordstrom in my new town is bigger, one of the biggest in the area, and they recently added a service desk like Marianna mentions, for picking up online orders and such as well as returning things. I prefer that because I'm not taking someone away from their regular area, and I usually have items from several categories of the store, or from online and in store purchases both, to return, so it takes a few minutes to do.

I can't really compare the Nordstrom of now to the Nordstrom of many years ago. I didn't grow up on the west coast so I never went in one until the late 90s at the earliest. It seems like with the nationwide (and Canadian) expansion and the promotion of NAS, etc., they're not really aiming at a high end market anymore, more of a mid level market. Nicer than Macy's but not as exclusive as Neiman Marcus or a specialty store.

My Nordstrom is fantastic but we are a small town with a regular staff, or maybe I'm just a high maintenance customer!

I worked at Nordstrom when they were transitioning out the customer service area. The idea is that any associate can help you with anything (returns, questions, a purchase, etc). My local store still built a "service desk" because our clientele wanted a central customer service point. Not sure if other stores have done that, but I do think it's a good idea. I mostly shop online now and haven't been inside a store in a while so I can't really speak to your other concerns. They have definitely remodeled the stores to look more modern.... again, not sure if that's a bad or good thing!

This is the third time I have been to my Nordstrom, a place I have shopped in for over 20 years, and have been totally annoyed at the changes they have made. It seems the sales staff is non-functioning- almost rude, there is no customer service area like there used to be, no carpet anymore- just cement floors, the music has changed, and the quality of clothing seems to have gone to the birds.
Ever since the sons took over from the original founder(s) the store is not the place it used to be. Anyone have similar thoughts, or is it just this one store?
