I live in Beijing where there is a strong youth culture interested in fashion and trends. My work colleagues are all fairly young and they are devoted to fashion, even planning shopping trips abroad to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul (where clothing items tend to be better quality and more stylish). While we don't spend a lot of time talking about trends in the office, there are daily conversations about the outfits everyone is wearing, and if someone finds a good deal online, we do group buy sometimes, things like cardigans, sweaters, scarves, etc.

In general in Beijing clothes and accessories are super cheap and easy to buy and everyone is looking to express themselves, so it does seem like fashion, style and trends are important to a lot of people - let's say under 50 years. Often times outfits here tend to scream "I'm wearing every trend happening right now all at once" though, so it's always very interesting to walk down the street and people watch. I have to say there is a real sense of freedom to dress however outrageously or quietly as you want.

The older ladies who don't seem to take much interest in fashion are the most inspiring to me - they do some amazing pattern mixing.

I have a good friend at work who loves fashion, although more higher end, and we often spend time together discussing our wardrobes, wardrobe holes, whether we should buy this or that, and whether our bums look big in what we're wearing..lol. I get on well with other women at work (medical science academia), and they often admire my outfits and I compliment them on theirs, but they usually finish with, 'It looks great on you but I could never wear that" or something similar. I think that they just need to be more adventurous, but perhaps they just don't have the interest that I have.

Most other women I know seem to like and show an interest in fashion, but not at the level that I do. I have always been obsessed with fashion from as young as I can remember, but I've never really been part of a tribe of similar fashion obsessed people. There are certainly 'tribes' of women in my city who are similar age and have fashion and other events...but I see photos in the local paper and it's always glitzy, shiny, loud, colourful OTT fashion....just not my scene at all.

I think some people just aren't interested in fashion, which is perfectly fine, but them again we have to remember that fashion is a big tent. There may be many different groups who dress differently but still consider themselves followers of fashion as they understand what's in fashion. It's hard to draw solid lines here. Very post -modern fence-sitteresque I know ...

My work friends who I rarely see now because I retired 5 years ago were into fashion. We were all ages. I just had dinner with a work friend and she looked very FAB. Her haircut, outfit and accessories were TDF. I wanted to take a pic for the forum.
My sister always looks great. Drapey, edgy style.
A few of the Yoga people seem to be interested in fashion. Hard to tell unless you see them in non Yoga clothes.

Well considering socks matching sandles is high fashion in my office. Or the dreaded dockers or Mom jeans. I seem to be the only one who cares. I'm trying not to fall into that I don't care category.

My thrifting group and sister circle are very high fashion I'm my own drummer. No one dresses like me. But that is ok they accept me as I am.

My friends and female relatives of a similar age (say 40-50 years) make up the range:

- Tidy Eco Queens, look neat and smart, but not trendy, choose clothes for environmental reasons only (thrifted, NZ made, organic etc)

- Chain Store Queens - always looking wonderful, trendy, never spending a lot of money, (One always in heels)

- Designer Queens - mostly NZ labels, ahead of the trends, some now add in Asos type pieces too

- Activewear Queens - live in gear, including merino and puffers, lots of colour and lycra, morphing into ladies who lunch queens, wearing colour, heels, and blonde long hair

- Practical Queen - lots of denim, lots of puffers, converse sneakers, rarely in a dress, might wear a leather jacket and patterned top with jeans and boots for a night out.

And most of us fall somewhere in the middle. But I see most of my friends being stylish, up with the play and choosing pieces that really suit them.

And I love them all :)

In my experience, people who have retail and/or marketing aspects to their careers seem to be the most likely to have some trend awareness (and not just fashion retail/marketing, either). Your eye adjusts a whole lot faster when you're actively studying what's out there. I have a friend who makes jewelry and she mentioned specifically seeking out street style photos online to stay in touch with what's trending. She always looks great, too, in a unique, artsy way.

I've been selling on Etsy for more than 6 years now, and it amuses me to see trends that are big there one year, bubble up until they appear on the shelves at Target the next year.

I think people do pay attention to style trends but not, in my vicinity, the ones we're reading about here or on typical outfit blogs. I think they get most of their information from noticing what co-workers wear or people at their church or typical social events. Also from seeing what's displayed in their favorite stores and from tv shopping channels. Also soap opera characters and tv female personalities like the newsreaders or national morning shows.

People my son's age - under 30 - seem to swear by whatever they've read on facebook or twitter. A lot of people around here don't seem to have internet or, sometimes in the case of otherwise sophisticated suburban professional women, really don't know how to use it for much. When we used to have DSL, there was some problem and we had a repairman out and I asked him whether other people in the area were also having the same trouble. He burst out laughing. Didn't know of any other DSL customers hereabouts.

It's common to have a smartphone (the guys here do and I don't want one) but I mostly see people use it as a family photo album.

I think it's mainly a subset of the teens to 30-something set who don't have kids and other responsibilities. A subset, because even in that age group, not all are interested in fashion.

I think there's another SIZEABLE tribe of women (and men, too) in their 40s, 50s, and beyond -- if that weren't true, YLF would not exist, nor would all the over 40 bloggers exist.

It's just that this demographic is spread out, not all in the same location. So the internet has been a boon for that.

Thinking about my close friends in town:

1. Super into fashion, but has her own quirky individual style not really trend driven, though she is trend aware. Super arty.

2. Not at ALL interested in fashion.

3. Interested in gear fashion only. For the purpose of doing stuff in said gear.

I have other friends here in town who enjoy clothes but I would not call them into trends. Many of them dress in a sort of leftover hippie boho/ academic/ artsy way.

A friend in Toronto who is very into fashion. A friend in Vancouver who is really into Eco fashion but more because she's into Eco than into clothes, per se -- though she supports great Canadian designers.

I'm the only one who has made it a kind of hobby, I think. Others have different hobbies, e.g. gardening.

The women in my office don't dress that well. They look okay, but nothing that remarkable. Except for one person - there is a new woman who I have really come to like. She has kids the same age as mine, and has similar tastes in clothing and accessories. Now I don't feel like I'm the only one who cares.

I was just thinking, everyone I know is force fed fashion tidbits by me until they have no choice but to embrace and I've turned them into monsters. Lolol! I'll never forget when my bf, Mr BROWN (he even had a brown can opener), told me to stop calling this sweater I was looking at green. It was 'Aqua.' That was hilarious!!

I wonder that sometimes too! I am certainly the most fashion forward person on my staff, albeit a small staff, two young mothers who work part time, one semi retired and our office manager. As the executive director I'm out there networking the most, and do need to look the part, which sometimes (like today when I was testifying at a State Senate Committee) means a suit or suit equivalent (which today was contemporary cut black trousers and sleek blouse for a column of color under a Theory grey blazer, topped off with some neck bling and black wedge pumps [my new best friend, serve as a heel but ever so much more comfortable]). People often comment about how nice I always look. and I am sure I spend more than most of my contemporaries on fashion. Fashion IS my hobby (well, one of several). I should probably spend less time here, and on other fashion blogs, and pinterest; I wouldn't know what I needed if I weren't learning that here! but there is a camaraderie around fashion here that is unbeatable.

So many of us here, on Peri's thread and other threads, have mentioned that we are the only ones in our social circle that pays attention to style/fashion/trends and so YLF has become our tribe for that interest.

This leads me to wonder what non-cyber group IS paying attention to fashion/trends? Is it teens and twenty-somethings without children and serious career obligations? When I was that age and a little beyond, I was all about Dress for Success and dress to be taken seriously (which translates to frumpy!!!) -- but that was a different era.
