When I had surgery with a predicted long recovery time, a friend took a gift bag and filled it with a range of small things: small tube of hand cream, a copy of a favorite poem folded in a hand written note, a pretty soap, a favorite book, colorful nail files, hand written cards with encouraging words, small bag of interesting shells, etc. Her instructions were to reach in and take something out whenever I needed a pick me up.

Your focus on making necessary moments brighter seems spot on for a weary caregiver. A listening ear can be underestimated, yet has enormous value and stating any specific task help that will work for you are also meaningful ways to walk the walk with her.
I focus on how there can be even the smallest respite from the responsibilities. I have driven a care giving friend and their charge to medical appointments so they didn’t have to deal with parking and could go in with their relative. All the best.

Thanks all! Good ideas.

I'm going to take the coffee suggestion (and same idea for tea). I know she drinks it daily so I'm going to upgrade her to a special blend and I know who to ask to find the right one. And she does like candles so I'm getting one of those "designer" kinds she won't buy herself. Ditto with some chocolate from a local "bean to bar" place, and maybe a Starbucks gift certificate. Maybe a book of short stories since that's less of a time commitment that a regular book.

I'm staying clear of meal type gifts because of multiple reasons. Those are in general good ideas but I have inside info they won't be the thing for this. And my own past experience with meal kit plans was very negative.

Thanks for the help!

If she’s back and forth to the hospital or other location away from home, maybe things like nice travel sized hand cream and gentle hand sanitizer, a water bottle, neck pillow if spending time in a bedside chair, inexpensive slippers that can be thrown out when no longer needed…

Some lovely things friends did for me when I was in a similar situation:
- A DoorDash gift card—guilt-free takeout!
- Sheet masks—my basic skin care got iffy when I was exhausted and these were an easy treat
-Special tea—Big Heart Tea Co makes these beautiful herbal teas in fabric sachets
-A 2-minute crossword puzzle book—You know those NYT minis? A friend sent me a full book of those and they were about all my brain could handle at the time, but somehow it was really relaxing to do those tiny nuggets in my down time.

I’m really anti-clutter, but I found I appreciated gifts like blankets, mugs, and candles for the comfort they represented. Yeah, maybe I’ll give them to goodwill eventually, but they were a tangible reminder that my friends weren’t going to judge me for taking time for myself, so maybe I shouldn’t either.

I am a huge fan of candles as a clutter-free gift. Scented or unscented as your friend's taste prefers. Fancy matches alongside are a nice touch.

I would avoid giving any “ objects” like mugs or candles or tea towels or such that can be cluttery, which for me would add to stress. So comestibles, and coupons, or things that get used up.

If she does do coffee stops, then yes, a gift card so no guilt about spending.
If she’s nearby, then dropping off small amounts of fresh healthy food already prepped—small clusters of grapes, & strawberries, fresh cut veggies & hummus ( but whatever you know she likes) —because under stress it’s hard to eat healthy foods and just washing fruit or peeling a carrot seems overwhelming. Or some home delivery of same—good soups etc. Does she have a family? Because then helping feed the family with a casserole or sandwich tray is useful.

I also agree that if you’re close enough, location-wise and via friendship, then if she’ll let you do a grocery shop or drive a kid to an activity or take dry cleaning or something, that would give her maybe a few moments to take care of herself.

She may not herself identify any ways you can help, but may still wish for some. I’ve done my own “ coupons “ ( mine were just typed, but those with artistic skills could make them prettier) for a few good deeds you THINK she might accept, and then some blank/ open-ended types like, “ One errand for anything you can think of”, or, “Late-night phone call just to vent”. The idea is the “ coupon” might break down a barrier to asking. If there are any humorous former times you’ve had together or “ inside jokes “ that are appropriate, you could incorporate that somehow. And just puts out there the idea that you’re available to help.

Sometimes I've done for my friends a little care package with tea, a mug, some dark chocolate or another little treat, a magazine, maybe a gift card for coffee or something they can grab on the go. Sending positive vibes to your friend; hope her stressful time resolves soon and positively x

I was going to suggest a fancier coffee than usual, if she makes it at home? Or just a special drink? I like to have something like elderflower cordial or similar that I wouldn’t usually get, if trying to treat myself?

My BFF is going through massive stress with caregiving for a family member. She is having to do so much, with not much cooperation, and is still working so her time is stretched to the limit. We usually give multiple birthday gifts so I'm trying to think of things that would be small and simple pick me ups. For example, I've gotten her some shower steamers as a way to have a kind of spa treat without needing the time a bubble bath would take. I've also gotten her some chocolate flavor coffee syrup.

The idea is to take something she'd be doing anyway and make it a little special. Nothing like a spa gift card because she doesn't have time for the simplest manicure and wouldn't go. Any ideas?
