Yeah, um that article was all about deer hunting, I didn’t see anything about camo.
As a couple of people have already pointed out, hunters use RealTree (TM) in various patterns depending on the ecology. I’ve seen the pink real tree in stores back home, I personally think of those as socio-signinfier. The store that sells it also has regular RealTree camo, guns, hunting rifles, hunting bows, but is also the hardware store, and also has the best selection of running shoes for the area.
The armed forces use a more pixelated camo, for decades now. Even Desert Storm camo was way different.
And if you want to talk about weird camo, look up Dazzle ships.
So the blobby camo that’s now in a million colors, it’s a pattern. And I think I remember first seeing the pink and other bright camo in streetwear (aka Urban). Also if I remember correctly Destiny’s Child had a whole video with camo outfits (when Beyoncé’s mom did the costuming).
I have grey camo leggings I got at that high fashion emporium known as Costco. I was tired of black leggings, and I’ve gotten a few compliments.

ETA

Here’s an older article about a black owned streetwear company being ripped off

https://www.hollywoodreporter......camo-10118

Camo as fashion has been around for a while, it’s just more mainstream now

Camo. It is completely out of control. Mossy Oak, Realtree, all the outdoor and hunting store house brands...
Pink camo, blue camo, different types of tree patterns, camo with bedazzled bling added...
It needs to stop

Oh, interesting about the colours LaPed. I never wear orange with blue, although it is a smashing colour block combo. It is also the colours of my hometown soccer team, and I am just not into spectator sports at all. The combination of red and green is also something I avoid, it feels too Christmas tree-y to me. And I have an issue with white collars popping out of shirts. I would feel very masculine and like a priest/Vicar in such attires! Amusing!

MsMary, your outfit is awesome! See, other people make these patterns look so cool I end up wanting them, and then have to learn the hard way that I won't feel cool wearing them.

For me, there's a world of difference between "I don't wear" and "I don't like" -- just as "I wear" and "I like" don't always line up. There are lots of things out there that look great on others but don't feel right in my wardrobe.

A couple other things that have been "ruined" for me by association:

1. "The Dude" sweater from The Big Lebowski. It's a vintage Pendleton cardigan. I've always loved the colour and design even before I was familiar with the movie. Pendleton re-issued it and even makes a women's version now. I'd love to have one, but I don't think I'd ever be able to properly enjoy it because the pop culture associations are too strong.

2. Hogwarts colours. I grew up with Harry Potter, being roughly the same age as the main characters were in the first book when it was published. It's a big part of my milieu, but I'm not a big fan. Read the books, never saw the movies. (Give me His Dark Materials and the new BBC adaptation any day. ) If I put on a red/gold combo or a green/silver combo, I definitely feel self-conscious about it and worry that I'm proclaiming a fandom (and house loyalty) I don't really feel. Working with kids and teens doesn't help of course; that series has had remarkable staying power. I've worn a green outfit with silver shoes and had a student say, "Oooh, you're a Slytherin!" :D

Rachylou, so true about the army surplus! Even my little town out in the sticks had one. I thought it all seemed so cool, but somehow off limits for me.

Jules, yes, that is a good point about combat boots. I’m a peacenik, so when I first got mine, I tried to call them by any other name, but eventually gave in & went with the obvious.

It’s fascinating to me that one thing character can have so much influence on how we perceive something, but this is far from the first time I’ve heard the Bundy reference in regards to leopard.

Gigi, I think I have the same response to plaid shirts. I never realized it until I cocked my head at your response & thought “odd that a placement makes so much difference”. Then I realized that with all the great plaid pieces people have shown lately, I’ve felt really tempted, but I’ve resisted because I know that once it is on my back, a plaid shirt feels just the same way to me. (But not for the same reason—dairy farming is a generation back in my family).

Agree with you that the divisiveness is sad. Seems to me that getting dressed doesn’t have to be so serious—people here are having fun looking at our own little quirks. Also, “different” is not the same as “bad”. Several people on the forum recently have mentioned equestrian connections to certain styles—La Ped’s mom even asked if she was going to get back into riding because of an outfit she had on. That didn’t occur to me, but knowing such associations makes our appreciation of fashion richer. Another one where I depart from “fashion” (bodies aren’t fashion, but comments on clothes very often embed this mindset) is curvy figures, particularly a big backside. I think they’re great. And, because I’m not a good observer of such things, I am really glad that someone once pointed out to me that athletic attire (“gear”) is seen differently in Europe than in the US.

I’m disappointed when it devolves into name calling /labelling and throwing back admonishments. I simply ( or so I thought) came back to say I didn’t want to participate in this type of conversation because it made me uncomfortable . I could have just deleted my first response but thought I was in a civil conversation . I’m still , to this day , surprised when things go sideways so quickly , bringing out such harsh words .

For me, a red plaid flannel shirt reads as work wear, I think because my uncle always used to wear one when going out to milk the cows, lol. I actually love red plaid and don't have that reaction when I see it as pants or a skirt--just as a flannel shirt.

I'm sorry to see that this thread has become divisive. I thought that everyone posted their comments very respectfully, cognizant of the fact that everyone has different fashion preferences and that that's OK. I like seeing people's different opinions, especially when they link them back to their life experiences.

Rachylou, army surplus was part of my wannabe punk teen subculture days for canvas messenger bags and green army cargo shorts to be worn worn with docs (although those shorts never really fit me). And LP made a very interesting point about combat boots. Yet somehow green camo was off putting until I could see it as just another pattern.

A sidebar about camo: it has occurred to me that if you shop army surplus, you inevitably end up with camo. I’m thinking not only hunters and soldiers, but campers, birders, and punk rockers... and also a case of uneaten MREs because of that one time you thought ‘that could be a good idea’...

As a positive counterpoint - I love pink and other ‘fashion’ camos! I myself only have one tee shirt in pink and blush tones, but I love seeing different versions, I think precisely because of the prettyness and nonsensical irony (love your elephant toenail example rachylou). For years I could not consider classic camo because of the associations mentioned just felt so inauthentic on me, but as a lover of olive greens I finally came around to actually liking it this last trendy go-round. After so many years it was interesting to experience that shift. Have had a similar experience with leopard print, and LP nailed the Peg Bundy reference on that one.

I had/have a poison eye for a lot of things; I'm just judgy like that. But being here has taught me a lot, and I have surprised myself by liking a look I had a poison eye for on someone else. And while it is exceedingly rare, sometimes things here even help me get over a poison eye.

Regardless, there are people here far more fashionable than I am, and I certainly won't be one to cast stones when I can't even identify PPL.

1. I'm not "taking it badly" , but nor do I find it amusing. I was the first one to jump in, then realized how wrong that was.
2. having a sense of humour is one thing, and I don't for a minute think your intentions were anything but to have fun, but I know from experience how tricky these poison eye threads can be. I happen to think NASA t-shirts are cute, I like camo (including pink) , I don't mind Michael Kors crazy over the top stuff and I'm not sure I think we should be inviting criticism , even if it's "all in fun". There is no such thing . It becomes a passive-aggressive stance, and having a thick skin has nothing to do with it. I don't want to contribute to a conversation that might hurt someone else's feelings. I don't think it adds any value anywhere.

A sense of humor about ourselves can be helpful in life, in many ways. That’s why I grounded my giggle at camo in a newspaper article about the place that made me. There are also I retesting questions about when it is cultural appropriation & where that line is, or diffferences in these styles. Cowboy boots, for example, vary from the pointy-toed boots used in Western riding to the snip-toe, plainer rompers to the elegant $1000 boots those same ranchers might wear after hours. Is it different when they wear them than when the newly sworn in president does? Some of these things were starting to come out. But yes, to have this conversation you have to have thick enough skin to recognize that everyone’s tastes are different—someone somewhere would probably laugh at every one of us. That’s life.

FashIntern, FWIW, let me try to explain with this example.

Over the years there have been threads on YLF about "what is your poison eye?". It invited conversation about the types of looks and items Fabbers didn't like on anyone. In turn these same items were sugar eye and favourite looks and items for other Fabbers. (Because beauty lies in the eye of the beholder!) I'm sure that no one intends to be insensitive and mean here, and that was not your intention either. But feelings can be hurt, and people can feel a little down when stuff that they wear is insulted. Not everyone is able to find the humour, is thick-skinned, and can shrug things off. I get that we can't help some of our poison eyes - I have a few too - but it can help when we don't invite those types of conversations. Keeps things lighthearted.

You know , this argument or eyeroll over misappropriation of clothing symbols , fabrics , styles could be made for every single thing we wear . I withdraw from this conversation All it’s doing is inviting criticism of things we like to wear and that’s a little disheartening .

I have a hard time with patchwork, real or faux. Especially faux. I've never seen it done where it doesn't look tacky. And it also seems to recall a specific period- the sixties - but badly. I just saw leather patchwork gloves in plain leather and cheetah print from Michael Kors. Expensive AND ugly! Again, to my eyes.

Highly visible brand logos look weird to me. Unless one is an employee of a brand and must wear it.

I can’t bring myself to wear camo either. I worked in a VA hospital, for one thing. Loads of hunters here also. Not sure I actually have any real disapproving reaction to others wearing it as fashion, though - just don’t aspire to it.

Bra exhibition as fashion loses me completely though. Whereas bikinis on the beach, not the same.
