What is it about guys who looked like a million bucks when they were working? Then they retire and turn to the official retired guy uniform of shorts, Tshirt and athletic shoes.

His shoes are the the worse. At 6' 3' with size 13 shoes those white shoes look even more gigantic than what they really are! So I'd say the biggest faux-pas is the shoes. I did get him to buy some brown sketchers. Big improvement! He tried loafers with no luck.

What is really sweet is that he is trying to dress better because he appreciates how I have been dressing.

Oh, wait, I just saw Auburn's comments about sports jerseys, and I absolutely refuse to call sports jerseys at a sporting event a faux pas. It's an indication that you're a fan of the team, and it's perfectly acceptable. There is something nice about going to a sporting event and seeing everyone wearing jerseys and cheering for the team. I think that it's all about context. Sports jersey worn around town on a random day? No. Sports jersey worn to the game? Absolutely acceptable.

Shana, my dad (and a LOT of guys in Seattle) are big on Birkenstocks (or any sandals) with socks, so I don't think it's just a Euro thing. One of my professors in AZ even does it when the weather is cool (though not while teaching).

My husband is a pretty good dresser - lots of button down dress shirts & trousers during the week. Pretty nice shoe collection. I convinced him a number of years back to give up the pleated dress pants but he still favors volume so no skinny pants for this guy! I kind of wish he would try some more streamlined slacks...

Though he's European, he's gone full-blown American with his "home" clothes - lots of fleece pullovers & cargo pants!! He doesn't wear the casual pants out though the fleece topper has kind of overtaken his other fall jackets which is unfortunate. He is really, really picky so I can't really buy clothes (other than socks and boxers) for him. He dislikes prints and plaids (calls them engineer shirts) and also doesn't wear short-sleeves unless its polo shirts. His preferred look in the winter, which I LOVE, is a button down under a half-zip sweater.

I think his major don't (other than fleece) is the Birkenstocks with socks. I guess it's a Euro thing???

Oh, this is such a fun and silly post.

Hubby's favorite outfit is a button-down shirt and his swim trunks. I know, I know. Fashion and style are just not his thing.

I will say though, he's very good about letting me give him feedback when he wants to look presentable, like when we go out with friends or to dinner. If he wants to wear his bizarre office-swimwear combo around the house, I'm not going to say anything. He's lucky he's so handsome.

Mine has gotten much better than when we started dating. Back then he wore tie-dyed shirts and zubas!!!!! After we got together I convinced him they did NOT flatter his body...he dresses ok now- always casual- the only time I saw him 'dressed-up' was our wedding! but his pants are too short, and he persists in tucking *every* top in over his ahem, 'rounded' belly! such a sweetheart though, I cant complain!

I guess I'm lucky, but my SO has always been good about dressing himself. He wears wool pants and button-down shirts or suits to work, and jeans or shorts and either tee-shirts or button-down shirts on the weekends. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with a tee-shirt and jeans when the venue is casual, and he looks good in them. He's very good at knowing what types of clothing are appropriate for what types of events.

The only bad habit he ever had with clothing was that he sometimes wore pleated-front khakis when I first met him ten years ago. I told him flat-front would look better, he tried them, and has never looked back. Actually, he stopped wearing khakis entirely a few years ago. But if he ever goes back to them, it will be flat-front.

The North Face fleeces are KILLING me. From October to March it's all I see. grey or black grey or black grey or black. It's gone on too long! I CAN'T TAKE IT! I bought him a blue zip-up sweatshirt just for a blessed change. In his defense he likes wearing button-downs and blazers, as long as he can wear jeans. But he likes to wear his fleece with blazers too, in case it's, you know, cold. *grasps head in hands*
love that guy though.

Rute, I'm with you. My SO has excellent taste and doesn't balk about spending money on fashion; in fact he has encouraged some of my recent fashion splurges. His Mon-Fri outfits aren't terribly inventive (long sleeve button down and dress slacks) but are always good quality and nice looking. And his shoe collection is very respectable: Ferragamo and Gucci loafers abound. And when he really dresses up, he breaks out the most gorgeous suits and ties.

Weekends, however, are a different story. He has a pair of CAMO cargo shorts that make me want to scream. And sees no problem with wearing athletic jerseys to support his favorite teams. I find them abhorrent. In fact, at a recent game, he told me that "almost all" of the women would be wearing female versions of jerseys and I should to. Um, no. My support will be limited to wearing the team colors, thank you very much. See attached pic: him proudly in one of those wretched mesh jerseys; me in team colors.
But, minus athletic events and lazy couch days, he always looks very sharp. So I've got no room to complain.

I will say he is starting to come to me and ask if shirts fit "right." I think he used to think if he could get them on, they must fit. He still drives me crazy with his lack of PPL, though!

A month ago i would have said "all of them" too, but lately my husband is going through a huge style change. I think it's because he turns 40 next month.

In the past he pretty much wore superhero t-shirts and faded jeans. All the shirts are way too big. Always tennis shoes or cowboy boots (in the winter). white socks exclusively. 2 years ago when he needed a suit for a job interview, I got to dress him up and was in heaven. I even got talked into a casual jacket for dates - it has since sat in the closet for 2 years - but may come out now with the overhaul.

So he's now making some subtle but important changes - plain t-shirts that fit and have no holes, darker jeans that fit better, woven shirts, new brown and black leather shoes (casual slip-ons), and socks that match the shoes. I'm struggling a bit with the cost of this new change - done all at once. But I recognize that this may be it for the next 5 years so I'm trying to just find a way to pay for it.

Now if I can just get him out of the pleated khakis!

I'd have to say my husband is a much better dresser today than he was a few years back. He used to live in oversized polo shirts and pleated khakis, but now owns a few pair of well fitting jeans and some stylish buttondown shirts.

He still occasionally pulls out his sports team attire and wants to leave the house wearing a team jersey and matching ballcap. I think that sort of thing is fine if you're attending a superbowl party, but looks pretty silly anywhere else.

I'm just grateful he's starting to value my opinion and is open to suggestions.

What fun reading everyone's posts!

My hubby doesn't really commit any crimes of fashion (pun intended) because I have been his personal stylist for a LONG time. Years ago, he wore pleated Dockers, but I told him that they made him look 'chubby', which he's definitely not.

That did the trick. He wears flat front khakis now.

My 25-year old son dresses so well, he could be a model. He has always been a fashion-conscious boy!

LOL Angie, about your sweet Papa wearing sandals with socks. My daddy did too!

I guess I'm lucky that my hubby loves clothes as much as I do...lol
When we travel, he takes more outfits than I do.

up until *very* recently my husband had been pairing white athletic socks with his more business casual shoes. it looked terrible. despite me mentioning it for years, it didn't click until around August. Not sure what did it but he suddenly realized just how bad it looked and how it was wrecking an otherwise put together look.

phew!

now, if we can find some button downs that aren't too long that will fit his wide shoulders, that would be perfect.

My husband is an outdoorsy scientist--and looks like one. That's fine with me, though. The only big problems are too-short pants and favorite shirts worn until they fray!

My husband is a fantastic dresser, especially his work clothes: he loves a bright shirt, cool textured tie, and a sharp vest for the office. He has gone the whole year wearing a tie every day, and is committed to finishing out the year that way.

If I had a complaint, I wish he had better jackets. He hates shopping for them so he just picks the first one he sees. He got two leather jackets (leather like butter) this fall but they are both in a zip-up style I think is unflattering on him. I had hoped he would get at least one more like a blazer style but no go!

My SO cannot be accused of looking scruffy, but tends to cling to unflattering styles from the early days of his business career: pleated trousers, often with cuffs; jackets that fit in the boxy manner of the 80s. With encouragement, however, he's beginning to venture into flat-front pants, so anything is possible!
