Wow, as I was reading through everyone's responses I can totally see each person rocking the era they named! AJ: I can see you in the 30's, in fact that was what came to mind right away.

The posts about the ruebenesque era are hilarious, but also very important; the fashions of those days required a very specific voluptous frame, one that my angular frame would have looked poor, hollow and peasanty in. I love the upper class clothing, jewelry and haristyles from that age. I also love the Japanese Kimono and aside from not being Japanese, I think I could have rocked that too back in the day.

I think tall-ish, like 5'8" or so, paired with a racy rectangle body type, is an in vogue shape, but bigger than that in height and body type, not so much :). At least in my experience....(just in terms of the challenges in finding clothes that fit, etc.).

Angie, the first season of Mad Men takes place in 1960. So the entire show has taken place in the '60s.

Lisa, I always think of the later '90s as the years of the pear, because J. Lo was so popular at that point, and everyone was loving her backside. However, when I actually think of what styles were particularly pear-friendly back then, I have trouble recalling any.

Steph, Mad Men started off its story in the late 50's, no? Only now in Season 4 (I think it's season 4), have they hit 1964. At least that's how I perceive the time frame :). And quite right - the 60's covers 3 totally different styles:

1. early - Mad Men styling which I think of as pukka 50's carry over. Jackie 0. Grace Kelly.
2. middle - Mod styles a la Twiggy and the Beatles.
3. late - hippy vibe that carried on into the 70's

Pretty pears are always fabulous, Lisa! The quintessential female form - right next to hourglass.

@Iondonkiwi My first thought was rubens too!! :)

The style of time was corseted to discomfort, with large voluminous skirts, sleeves and collars. I'd prefer to rock it true rubens style and lounge around all day in the nude with a hand mirror to admire myself and basket of fruit that's fed to me by cherubs : o

In recent history though- I think the 50's and early 60's were kind to the curvy girls. There were also some nice trends throughout the 80's and 90's. Of course- right now is the best time for any body type. It seems like there are so many different trends to play with and people seem to value originality so much more.

Michelle - the volumptous women represented in the paintings of Rubens was my first thought too. However, since the women in these paintings were mostly naked that doesn't leave us very much in the clothing stakes to work with ;)

Something that I had never thought of is whether the women represented in these paintings represented the ideal shape for fashions at the time, or the ideal shape that men prefered at the time.

I'm not sure. On top, I am Dior's New Look of the late 40's and 50's.

But I'm quite straight and slim through the hips, which is not very 50's at all.

I guess my body type is very Hollywood 2011. Big boobs and skinny everywhere else.

Interestingly, despite heroin chic and pretentious Calvin Klein ads being the in thing in the 90's, I also think of curvy models like Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford (well, as curvy as a model can be).

Hm, my thoughts on the decades are a little different than Angie's. To me the '60s are the most difficult, because Mad Men actually takes place in the early '60s, so it has opened my eyes to the fashion of the early part of that decade. I used to associate that more with the '50s. I guess decades aren't really clear-cut, and there is carryover, but if the show is accurate, it is currently taking place in (I believe) 1964, and they are still wearing the pencil skirts and the flared dresses. Twiggy actually didn't come around until 1966, so I'm wondering if we will see the fashions on the show evolve toward that look over the next few seasons.

So how do we define the '60s? As two different fashion moments: one of Mad Men-type styles and one, in the latter part of the decade, that featured Twiggy-like looks and a whole lot of mod?

When I think '80s I think big hair, skinny jeans and leggings, and I have always felt the latter two look best on the very thin. I guess the other thing that defined the '80s for me was high-waisted, pleated pants and strong shoulders. When I think '90s, I think of two things: grunge, so clothes that were big, baggy, and hid almost everything; and Britney Spears, aka low-slung jeans and midriff-baring shirts.

So I think it's tough to do this because we probably all have different memories or associations with these eras. For me, I think that what I have defined as the early '60s is probably my best time period, along with the 1940s, which featured a lot of nipped waists, but didn't have the extreme skirt poufiness of the 1950s.

Interestingly, Audrey was actually at her most popular throughout the entire 1950s and into the early 1960s. From the mid-60s through the end of the decade she took a career break to spend time with her kids. So I guess her style was actually reflected in that later 1950s/earlier 1960s time period? The skinny cropped black pants we all associate with her were actually from a 1957 film. I don't think of her style as particularly fitting with the rest of that era, but I guess that's the definition of a trendsetter.

This is a hard question - not clean cut at all!

I think of Twiggy and Audrey in the early 60's and they are both as straight and as slim as can be.

40's and 50's, I think of Mad Men and Marilyn Monroe - voluptuous hourglass figures.

20's I think of the Great Gatsby.

30's I think of Ginger Rogers.

70's I think of Lauren Hutton, Ali McGraw, Barbara Streisand, and Jacqueline Smith.

80's I think of voluptuous figures too actually. Demi Moore, Blondie, Kim Wilde and Madonna spring to mind.

90's I think of waifs like Kate Moss and Wynona Ryder.

00's and now I think of ALL body types.

I am happy to dress for any fashion era - but one thing is for sure - I do NOT have the feet for today's fashions

70s were a bad decade for me, being short-waisted and curvy. High-waisted, wide-leg jeans are a nightmare for me. I'd say 40s and 50s would have been good - in recent memory, the 90s were also good to me, as I looked fab in short, A-line skirts.

I was one of those in the other thread who felt an affinity with 70's looks because of my frame. I am quite the opposite of leggy - but I am longwaisted. For that reason, 20's dresses do not appeal to me at all. I am as flatchested as any flapper could desire but the drop waists would make my legs look really short!

I have square shoulders and so could relate to Leah's point about IT's looking good in the 40's (though I am not an IT)

1970s and 1920s. My dad's mother--photos confirm that I look just like her--was an honest-to-goodness flapper!

Probably 1950s and early 60s for me too. What's the era that accommodates disproportionate curves?

Again as an hourglass I would say 1950's. I would say that the 1920s would have been the worst era for me.

No.. I cannot pull the big puffy skirts of the 50's.. too petite for that! I would dare to say 60's and 70's, I have learn that the sack dresses can be fab on me! This was such a major discovered!
The shorter skirts of the 60's are flattering for petites!
