I am so glad this came up! I am going to a niece's bridal shower this weekend and was wondering the same thing. My problem is that I am old and do not do cute little dresses and stilettos.

I guess black hose might work Angie. I will play around with and try to post some pictures in the upcoming couple of days.

Can you wear one of your DVF wrap dresses with black hose?

Thank you ladies!
I can not ask the hostess because I do not know her personally and do not even have her contact info, but it seems that fairly dressy in a skirt/dress is a way to go. I can also not change there either for similar reasons.
I have a couple of dressy pencil-skirts but they would be too restricting for all the commuting I will need to do, plus they are all black. The only dress I have than even remotely fits the occasion and weather is my trusty classic DVF. It is ink with tiny white pattern and it will have to do, although it will be too cold for bare legs so I will have to resort to nude hose that I personally seriously dislike.

(Angie, I haven't posted my today's Picasso outfit yet, it should be there in about an hour, complicated morning).

Can you ask the person hosting the shower? Your past outfits sound very appropriate to me and you always look pretty fab, but if it's important to feel like you fit in, maybe take the guesswork out of it? If you're not comfortable, I would take the engagement party outfits as a guide and wear a dress, or if not perhaps something floral, silky, "dress-like" in vibe.

Tea party sounds about right to me. Like the bride usually dresses, but up two notches.

Tanya, you are going to look fab no matter what.

I've been to a few of these, and people get quite dressed up. Skirts and dresses are the norm. I'm worried about your commute though. Can you change there?

I would say the "code" is definitely seasonal dresses--not fancy or formal, but "pretty". Meaning, the majority of ladies will wear a dress rather than pants, so if you have a dress you like and shoes, etc, now is the time to wear it and you'll be in a sea of dresses. But, i wore pants to the most recent bridal shower I attended for daughter of a friend. I tried to mitigate my non-pants look with pretty spring top, D'Orsay flats, handbag. I think current options of spring ankle pants and dressy loafers or sandals work well, too. So to me the concept of pretty, springy, festive, "effort was made"--perhaps colorful, but include sharp black & white combos in that-- are key to the look. It can be easier to get this look with a dress, but I always struggle with spring dresses and footwear.

I usually wear something that I would wear to a garden party or high tea. So, something pretty and feminine. My default is one of my printed full skirts + a pretty blouse + booties or sandals depending on weather.

I never worry too much about dress vs. pants because I really just don't do dresses unless it's a formal event. That said, I would dress up but not over the top - for me it would be a dressy pair of pants and probably a silky feminine top.

It's been a few years since I've been to a bridal shower but I seem to remember that most people wore cute dresses. They were occasions to dress up a little. Hopefully others of the forum have some more recent experiences.

I will be attending a bridal shower in NY this weekend and am at a loss of what I should wear, specifically how dressy/casual the outfit should be. I have never attended one of these in person, usually I would just send a gift, since most of these events required long travel; but this time I am making an exception because the shower is for a very close friend. The event will be in the afternoon in one of bridesmaid's apartments. I will be commuting a lot on subway and changing a couple of trains (staying in Manhattan and the event is in Queens) so comfy shoes are a must.
My slight anxiety also comes from the age difference - most of the other attendees, like the bride herself are in their late 20's or just hitting 30, while I am in my mid/late thirties (what does 37 count as ?). I feel that there is some kind of unspoken dress code that I keep missing. Last summer there was an engagement party for the same wedding at which I kept getting it somewhat wrong: I showed up to the actual party in flare white jeans and silk top while every other single woman wore a pretty dress. There was a followup casual event next day (trip to the zoo, brunch) where I wore a casual sundress while every other woman wore shorts and t-shirts. It would be nice not to stand out so much this time around.
