Janet, my husband's car has a smartkey that only needs to be removed from your pocket or bag if you want to lock or unlock the car from a distance. As long as you're carrying the key fob, the doors will lock/unlock when you touch the driver door handle, and you can also start the car without putting the key in the ignition. When I've been driving his car a lot, the next time I drive mine, I always try to open my car door without using my car key/remote, and I have been known to try to get into my house by just touching the doorknob!

My husband and I would both love a SmartKey (the kind you don't even have to push on) for the front and back door to our house! We never need the keys, until we need them...of course, I always have to rummage around in my purse.

Some great ideas here!
(Love reading about your car key Janet. I have to open my car door with the key and then reach in to press a button in the centre console to activate the central (un)locking, which I find annoying!)

VC, those are great ideas!

As someone who once broke a wrist because of the combination of slippery-soled shoes and a light rainfall, I wholeheartedly endorse the suggestion to make more soles non-slip!

Krishnidoux, I'm even MORE spoiled by my car. I have a Smartkey that unlocks my car as soon as I approach it, as long as the key is in my pocket or purse. And I generally enter my house through the garage, which means an automatic garage door opener, so I almost never have to take out a key. This week I've been traveling, and I keep forgetting that my rental car will not unlock itself!

R&J, thank you! Heartening news indeed. I have to say I wish they didn't call the 'beige' shade 'Natural', though! I'm rather more ochre than beige, most days, but I like to think that's pretty natural for me!

Krishnidoux, I'm a journalist myself, and this is one pet beef I've tried and tried to get published -- apparently not an issue too many editors around here want to deal with. They prefer to leave it under covers apparently :-/

Mandipa and Chrizzle, so true! And to continue on Suz's idea, we should have women of all skin tones try their products and show the makers how ridiculous it is... yet, maybe the makers continue to label beige products as "nudes" because they think that's what their customers want??? Anyone is a journalist here? This would be a good article topic.

I so agree with Mandipa about sports gear that are unfortunately designed to be worn exclusively in work-out situations. Our culture is a bit schizophrenic that way.

On to my wishlist:

1 - Discreet hooks on coats and jackets's shoulders for non-cross-over purses to stay put.

2 - Jacket sleeves' hems that are easy to shorten, and that would come with a system (buttons, strap?) to make lower part narrower so you can choose to wear it scrunched up or straight down.
Or anyway... sleeves easy to scrunch up!

3 - Umbrellas which don't break after a couple of uses.

4 - Cordless MP3!

5 - Workout tanks or any tank with a small hidden pocket the way some yoga pants do, where you can put your mp3.

6 - A little cushion on the floor of the driver's seat, just under the pedals, so that your shoe doesn't scuff or scratch from driving.

7 - When are they going to start making your home's door keys the way your car key works? Now we are having to slide the key in, twist, play a little with the knob and lock until it opens... horrible, especially when it's -22 and one must drop bags, remove ski gloves and touch cold wet metal with bare fingers to do all this!

How many of you have done like me in a moment of distraction, and stood there in front of your door pointing your car key at it, pushing on the "unlock" button wondering why nothing was happening? Well imagine... if in fact we could open our door that way. Bi-bip! No gloves to be removed... heck, you could do it from inside your coat's pocket! Then the door would open by itself with a hydraulic swoosh like on the back of a luxury SUV. What? It's allowed to dream, right?

You know how you're supposed to throw out your mascara and other eye makeup after three months? I wish mascara and things like liquid eyeliner came with an 'indicator' upon opening, to remind you to toss it after the three months are up. Like there's a green button that pops up when you open it, and it turns red after three months or so. Further, I wish that all mascaras were sold in trial sizes only, but perhaps three per package or something like that.

Not the most environmentally friendly idea, but you know your feet and underarms get all sweaty at the end of the day? And you're going from work or a busy day to a dinner out? It'd sure be nice if they had little wet wipes in individual sachets that you could keep in your purse - peppermint for your feet, and a deodorant/antiperspirant for underarms. Voila! All freshened up.

I have a tough time finding shoes that fit. I'm either a 7, a 7.5 or an 8, and this can be true even within the same brand. It'd sure be neat if I could walk on a computerized thingamabob in the store, and it would give me a list of recommended brands, indicating what sizes will fit me within that brand. I can dream...right?

I'd love it if the makers of Clarisonic and the Sonicare came up with a manicure/pedicure gadget of some kind. Something to polish up your feet, change out the attachment, and it buffs and smooths your nails.

I wish I could order pants and jeans 'made to order' in the sense that you can order the exact inseam length you wanted, without having to buy something that was overly long, trudge off to the tailor with your favourite shoes in tow, then have to go back and pick them up. Seems almost all pants and jeans are either too short or too long on me. I can't buy the too short ones obviously, but I also don't like buying pants that are way too long and then having to fuss with getting them hemmed. Otherwise, I'd like what someone else suggested - hemmed in store while you continue shopping. I don't mind paying extra for this service, but I don't want to have to go back a second time. I guess this is asking too much though, eh? Wanting it to be like dropping off a prescription, you shop for a bit, and then go back and get it.

Oh, and one last thing? Please stop labeling pants, Short, Average, Medium, Regular, Tall, Ankle or whatever - just give the length. Also include the rise length as well. Yup - Waist, Rise, Inseam. For all pants, shorts, clams...what have you. I don't know if your idea of "long" shorts is my idea of "long." Same goes for "Average" or "Medium" for pants. Your idea of "mid-rise" might not be my idea of "mid-rise." Just give us the numbers, PLEASE.

Ok, that's all I can think of for now

My favorite example of the ridiculousness of using "nude" to describe pinky-beige or golden-beige clothing was Michelle Obama's "nude" Naeem Khan dress. Whose nude was that? Certainly not hers!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/fem.....-bias.html

(Oh, and I totally get that "nude" underwear doesn't even match most white people's skin, but if you're light-skinned, bras and underwear in those colors will still pretty much do their intended job of looking discreet on you. If I wear a "nude" bra under a thin white top, it's going to be outlined against my skin in the same way a white bra would on a lighter person.)

I wish that a person could find high-cut underwear that was sexy. Just because some of us want undewear that will come above a c-section scar doesn't mean we want cotton Depends.

And it is shocking that underwear doesn't come in more skin shades. Like Chrizzle mentioned, Crayola stopped using "Flesh" as the name for their peach colour years ago, and most shoes are now labeled various shades of beige, taupe or tan instead of "Nude". Well, skin comes in so many colours, and underwear that won't show is pretty important. I would imagine that they would both change the name of the colours and expand the range.

Nylon granny panty beige. ROTFLOL, Elly!!! That is my favourite YLF line of the week!

Fully agree with the seriousness of the problem, though, Manidipa and Chrizzle, and agree absolutely the terminology SHOULD be changed.

Actually, it would be hilarious to put so-called "nude" undies on a whole series of women of different skin tones so manufacturers could see for themselves how ridiculous that moniker is.

What I wish: More bras for small busted women with small rib cages. I may be small, but I do have something and it does need more than an undershirt.

Yes! Born is particularly bad about putting thick stitching on the footbed of sandals. I've had to give away a couple of pairs because of that.

Mandipa, I hear you on the "nude" underwear/shapewear. For a while I was boycotting any brand that named shades of beige or tan "nude". My feeling is if that's what they're calling nude, they're not interested in purchases from people whose skin color is significantly darker than that. They call beige shades "nude", but if they have darker colors at all, they call it "cocoa" or something like that. Why not just give *every* shade a name that makes no assumptions about skin color? Crayola stopped calling their peach-colored crayon "flesh" years ago (though only after people of color expressed annoyance in an organized way), so when will underwear companies get a clue?

If I had to narrow it down to *one* thing - I would say that ALL expensive shoes should be made of soft leather (or the like) and have cushioning footbeds. It absolutely blows my mind how an $800 pair of shoes can be so wretchedly uncomfortable. Vile

Oh! I have another shoe-related one. Otherwise comfortable shoes with stupid stitching on the footbed (Born, I'm looking at you). Feels like standing on a cheese grater. Especially bad in sandals where you can't add an insole or wear socks.

You *can* have every single pair of shoes made to grip and not slide -- just get a Topy sole put on them! It is easily done by a cobbler, quite inexpensive, and works like a charm for smooth leather-soled shoes.

The one thing about smooth-soled shoes is that they are much better for dancing. You can't pivot and spin with grippy rubber soles. I often get a Topy sole put on my slidy shoes, but I've left a couple of pairs as they are so I can wear them for dancing at weddings and such.

IK, I never buy shoes that will touch my bare skin with fake linings. Sweaty and blistery, gross. But this means that I have very few pairs of shoes that I can wear without socks. I prefer my boots with leather or fabric linings but I do have a couple of pleather lined pairs - with tights or pants under it, it's not terrible. Not good, but not terrible.

I'd like more belt loops on pants so I don't have that ugly wave look thing where the belt stays on my hips but the pants don't.

Consistency of sizing.
Base it on inches, centimeter, or furlongs, just make it consistent.
(Think of men's shirt or pant sizes)

Shoe size availability - half-sizes and widths. In the not too distance past women's shoes had a width measure for the toe box separate from the heel -- what happened?

At the tippy tippy top of my list are shoes. I agree 100% with all of the above-mentioned suggestions for how they can be improved. When my feet feel bad, I feel bad.

I'd like to see...

(1) shoes with grippy soles, especially when walking on slick polished stone floors, glassy-smooth tiles, wet cobbles and waterlogged dirt tracks
(2) said shoes to be also rainproof and breathable
(3) said shoes to also look less like a makeshift mechanism (non-matching soles and uppers, clog-like 'comfort' shapes that still cause corns and blisters and massacre the bunions, closures that are clips or velcro strips when elastic or laces are easier to replace or repair)
(4) sturdy, flat, smooth bra and camisole straps and back panels on bras too
(5) choice of 'nude' shades in each underwear brand and style --- we need this to change the same way we needed foundations to come in more than three colours, people!
(6) option to at least get pants, dresses, skirts hemmed to preferred length in-store. The first is common in my country and done free of charge, and really, I see no reason for it to be less than universal, given what an easy alteration it typically is. Also: the option to get really minor alterations done in-store for larger stores --- move a button or hook to adjust waistband, add a extra hole in a belt, change out buttons, for a reasonable cost
(7) cute *woven* cotton nightgowns that are neither greatgrandma's castoffs nor tweenybopper!
(8) secure closures on ALL bags
(9) evening bags that actually hold a wallet, a phone, minimal cosmetics (compact, lipstick, eyeliner and mascara wand at least), a small comb, miniature perfume bottle, a few hair pins or a clip, and small stash of feminine supplies
(10) the option to mix and match not only different sizes but petites, juniors and misses sizes for suit jackets and skirts/pants as well as two-piece swimsuits. we DO all need different proportions, you know?
(11) exercise gear that does not assume all active people like a 'sporty' style and all yoga-practising people are interested in the Om or the spa feel. I'm not a fan of racing stripes and piping and golf collars and stripes, or 'peppy' slogans and cartoons --- just because I want to run doesn't mean I can't stop to smell the flowers or grab a coffee while looking less like I took a wrong turn off the local athletic team's practice turf or track! We get this with swimwear apparently and a few tennis dresses, but why not other sports? WHY is sporty a lifestyle choice as well as an aesthetic one? Why can't I 'run like a girl' without sporting a slogan that says so? Why not have a choice of styles to all tastes, just as with clothes for work, or dating, or going to school etc. You know, making activity a part of life rather than this specialized gear-requiring activity that is a choice only for *some* people rather than normative for all? (I DO realize some activities require specialized gear; but my beef is with garments that do nothing different from a regular pair of stretchy pants or a T-shirt but look different just because they are *meant for sports*)

I second Rae -- it drives me *crazy* when sweaters pill, especially after just a few wears. Ditto for pants, skirts, etc.

Also, this isn't about a clothing item per se, but it makes me really mad when size charts are inaccurate. Vanity sizing is all well and good, but I hate ordering the size I should be according to a retailer's chart and then discovering it's way too big.

Definitely shoes! Recently my feet got fussy and I'm fighting with blisters. Still don't have comfortable, fitting and fab sandals. Last weekend I was almost ready to leave the house in my old and worn down Birkenstock sandals because my feet were hurting big time. :P

And I second the panties with enough coverage that don't look like granma pants!

I wish for the days when you went to a store, bought a skirt in color and shape you liked and they hammed it to the LENGTH you want.

I wish for dresses with sleeves as the first option, with perhaps the same 'idea' as skirts. If you want it removed or shortened, the store provides the service.

I wish for avatars on online shopping sites where I can make my proportions and feet sizes and try on the clothes. and then give feedback to the manufacturer for why I am not buying their too short, too tight pieces.

I wish for shops were I can go in and try on a model dress that they sell variations of online, even custom.

Some day, I think!

and I also wish every posted picture of a model said (in addition to photographed and styled by, altered by so it was more obvious that the clothes did not fit the lady before several alterations)
