Another vote for try it on. I think you will need some customization though. I do think if those sleeves fit just right ( or can be made to) it will be smashing!

Hmmm-- I can see why you like the neckline-- on you it creates a perfect frame for your face and beautiful decolletage while the cap sleeves make sure your natural curves and shoulder line don't fight the squarer neckline.

I think the lace, if if feels nice and looks elegant and not cheap is something that really speaks to who you are an your style. I like the color as well. My only concern is sometimes these lace dresses can cling and then I end up with bumpy lumps where they don't really exist to the eye, but we all have minute crevices! It would be impossible to tell without trying though.

I think you are right on though--- on your body a slight/modified a-line with a nipped waist and some sort of cap sleeves and open neckline would be gorgeous, and I love the idea of lace or an embroidered mesh or chiffon for you. Something a little antique or retro.

The dress is beautiful. I am just chiming in to offer my support. (I absolutely dreaded the whole wedding production--from start to finish. You are not alone in that respect.)

I agree there is nothing like trying on in person. I did it in one, long, grueling day. Good luck!

I like cap sleeves too and also have sloping shoulders... so maybe that's the thing about them.

But on to the main event (!!): I can totally see this dress on you. I was looking at the construction (as much as possible) and it has seams in "good places." I had a bridesmaid gown once which I sort of regret now (my fault, I picked it), because it was a column (like this dress) but lacked seams down the front.

How much time do you have? Because you might want to order the dress to try on and show to a seamstress, then return for a larger size for alterations (it can help to have the extra material to work with).

So here is a photo of me in a similar style neckline. (perhaps not fair, though, as this may be the single best photo of me EVER TAKEN). The AT dress is much more structured than the one in this photo, so I think the shoulder line would actually be stronger.

I do get what you guys are saying about this type of neckline though - it has to sit just right, otherwise it looks really off, but it may be something that can only be determined if I actually physically try on this actual dress.

PS - Angie (and anyone else), what type of dress do you see me in? Keeping in mind I do not want strapless or spaghetti straps. Let's assume for a moment that cost is not an issue - what do you think would be my ideal dress?

I've held off saying anything, because I wasn't sure what my reservation was. I think what gives me pause is the straight-across bustline. It's so similar to a strapless in that respect, and I always find strapless tops and dresses so difficult.

Believe me I KNOW that very same lack of excitement for bridal salons... but I think you should at least try on a similar neckline and style in some kind of dress somewhere before fronting all that money to try it out.

Like Angie said, my issue is the sleeves. If that's what you love, we need to see it on to know they work! And if you don't love them, they look like you could alter them? I love it for you, and I love that we're getting to help pick your dress!

With caution I'm saying it's absolutely stunning for you, Diana. The sleeves will either look killer or awful though. I've seen this cut on clients and friends before and my response was mixed - because of the sleeves.

So fun that we are FINALLY yakking about wedding frocks!!!

Thanks ladies. I think I am definitely going to try to get measurement information for this, and then order to try.

Claire, I know that places can add cap sleeves to sleeveless things but it often seems to me like it looks a bit like an afterthought since they can't always match the fabric exactly. I like that this one has sleeves made of the same material!

Ariadne, it is definitely returnable. But I just don't want to order multiple $$$$ dresses at once, you know? So I need to be a little discerning with the online ordering.

Lyn, I am not planning on having multiple dresses for the actual wedding (no cheongsam for me!) but I do know that there will be a second reception maybe a month or so later in Boston (wedding will be in CA) and I do not know if I will wear the wedding dress again for that or whether I will get another dress - if I do, it will be less money though!

Jeanne, I have to admit that I am NOT EXCITED about the prospect of going to a bridal salon or similar. It seems really overwhelming and stressful - I don't like being the center of attention and I always feel pressured at such things. Some of you might know that I am kind of ambivalent about the whole prospect of having a wedding at all (I am not ambivalent about getting married! But I wanted to elope) and all of the related things are kind of freaking me out at the moment. (I know, I know, I am such an abnormal girl... but I have never been one to think about my "dream wedding").
But you are right. I probably should just suck it up and look at things in person. There is a wedding warehouse place in one of the nearby suburbs where a friend recently got a dress. I kind of wish it was still 5 years ago when I would have fit into the standard wedding dress sample size though.... I think I am 1 size too big now.

Sara, thanks for the codes! They do appear to work. Does anyone know how often AT has the 40% codes by any chance?

It has some potential and you've enough time to check it out I think, but I might advise you to hit a bridal salon or 2 in person first just to get a feel of what works and doesn't for shapes etc.. My formula would be one discount place to try on the biggest selection (not always pleasant, but informative - bring another set of eyes) and one fancy "make an appointment" salon to see better quality items and get a little more personal service (and usually wine). Then stalk online. Of course where you are there is always the Filene's running of the brides right? (are they still doing it?) Very excited for you starting this process. It's not half as fun as sampling caterers (my favorite part) but equally important.

I hope this is the one, but if it's not, a bridal alterations place can make sleeves like this from lace and add them to any strapless dress. I know cuz I saw it on Say Yes To The Dress, lol.

Alicat, yes that was a concern of mine as well. Although I suspect that this type of lace in silk is EXTREMELY expensive. I do think that the lace quality is something that I can't assess unless I actually see it in person.

That's a beautiful dress, Diana! How do you feel about it being nylon and polyester?

Shannon, I actually LOVE the little cap sleeves! Sometimes I think I am the only one here that likes them though... they are very flattering if done right on sloping shoulders like mine.

K, I think the length is one issue. I don't generally like to buy petite dresses because then I find the skirt part too short. This dress does come in petite and the stated length *should* be long enough for me in petite. But the main issue with AT dresses is that they are not cut for my really dramatic waist to hip ratio. I am a bigger size on the bottom than the top anyway, and AT dresses tend to be too straight cut. I figure a tailor could probably take the bodice part in though. In any case, before I order I am going to try to get actual measurements for the different sizes of this dress.

ETA: Yes I am going to see if a promo pops up - I think they might work because the current buy one get one 50% off promo shows up on the wedding dress pages... although who needs two wedding dresses is beyond me! We actually do not have a wedding date yet. =P But it will not be until at least March.

Oh that is breathtaking! I love it.

What about AT dresses is usually off for you? I wonder because I find I always have have better luck buying their petites for dresses (and Banana Republic's too) because I'm short waisted. Amazingly, it really takes care of most of my fit issues in those two lines. Same for full or 3/4 length jackets in either of those.

Do you have enough time to wait and see if they run a 40% off everything promo before you buy? Hmmm now I wish that I'd saved an old 40% off coupon so that I could see if they excluded wedding!

Ooooohhhh...this dress is gorgeous Diana and definitely has potential. The back is indeed absolutely divine. I like the slightly retro vibe to the dress which you can totally pull off effortlessly. The shape of the neckline is lovely and the overall silhouette so elegant. The only thing that gives me pause are the capped sleeves/shoulder detail. I think that could be tricky but you wouldn't know unless you tried it on.
