It's a tough find, I've tried. I think the one you posted in #4 would work. As Mo says, the safari style kind of makes it seem purposely correct. Otherwise I'd stick with lightweight cardis or 3/4 sleeve at least scrunched jackets.

I'm hesitant to wear a cardigan, just because it seems like my whole life has been lived in them, and most of the cardigans I have owned would have looked a bit too casual. However, I am willing to accept the argument that this might have been due to the particular cardigans themselves! Maybe a "swazer", with a collar, would be good?

I'll keep looking and keep my eyes peeled for a more safari-like jacket. I already have a cream colored canvas jacket that is sort of safari-esque but it may be too warm for the climate.

I think a dressy cardigan in black or white, or possibly a bright color like cobalt or bright teal or fuchsia, would look better with that dress. Now, that might not go with other items in your conference capsule.

I think it takes a very fashion forward cut or style for any short sleeve blazer to get past the possible frumpdom. Maybe safari influenced or very fitted or a sort of rock n roll look to it could help it along?

I do like those vests, although I don't think any of those particular examples would work well for me. I'm just too big and lumpy to look good in the long, oversized styles.

Anyway, here are some other things I found that are like what I have in mind. The black and white jersey dress is something I already have and plan on wearing at least once during the conference. The jackets are various eBay items that I might bid on (though probably not the blue one, in all honesty -- I like the color but not really the style).

What do you think of these?

I'm a nay on short sleeved blazers unless they come at least to the elbow. As Denise mentioned, sleeveless jackets are cool and can be worn with a sleeveless , 3/4 sleeve or long scrunched sleeve underneath. A short sleeve seems almost universally unflattering. Rolling/scrunching a longer sleeve would look better to my eye.

Another vote for 3/4 sleeves or better yet, the more fashion forward sleeveless jacket. I find short sleeves not terribly flattering and so '80s.

I have to agree that a lightweight blazer with 3/4 or scrunchable sleeves is far more fashionable to my eye. It is very difficult to get the proportions right on a short sleeved blazer for them to be flattering, and the two styles seem incongruous to me (a jacket and short sleeves don't go together for me, but then again I never understood open-toed boots, either, so maybe it is just me).

My recommendation is to go with a sleevless blazer i.e. vest. More modern. Here are some examples. I've searched Shopbop, Revoleclothing, Nordstrom which have higher end and pricier merchandise. I also went to QVC where there are quite a few vests in different fabrications and at lower prices. Enjoy. (Since I've been in the market for a vest, I enjoyed the search. In fact, I just purchased the last one!)

Mander, you may find that you get different answers by date of birth!

Since I'm way into "middle age" I really have to keep my frump-detector on, and to me there are certain styles that just more easily veer in that direction. Young ladies look in the mirror and see something totally different.

I purged all my short-sleeved blazers as well. They ended up looking, if not frumpy, then definitely unsophisticated to my eye. I'm another vote for a lightweightweight 3/4 sleeve blazer that you can scrunch.

I have purged all above the elbow blazers and decided they were yes, frumpy. Something odd about a jacket with short sleeves. A 3/4 sleeve is much better and more versatile in my mind. In a lightweight fabric or unlined, could be great for warmer climate.

I don't think a short sleeved blazer would be frumpy at all! I don't own one but would if I found one in the right material. You could pair yours with an A line or pencil skirt, tailored trousers or even dark wash denim for a casual yet tied together sophisticated look. I personally would go for black or a neutral but I don't see why a coloured one wouldn't look just as good!

I have faced the same dilemma because I run very cold indoors ,yet in summer or in resort conferences, long jacket sleeves can look too stuffy.

I have rejected just about every short-sleeved blazer I've tried on as I think they scream frumpy most of the time, at least on me for sure.

Things that might help are safari-type details, maybe a looser belted look, maybe more of a belted linen shirt over trousers look than a "blazer"--anything that makes it not look like the typical short-sleeved structured jacket-suit for middle-aged ladies. Fabrication can help some too, I think. You know that frumpy suit fabric when you see it.

Instead I've focused on 3/4 sleeve/bracelet sleeve or scrunched or ruched or rolled sleeve jackets; lightweight fabrics, linen blends, unlined, though I can wear lined in air conditioning easily; and cardigan styles; and am exploring the kinds of looks I described above in order to have a sleeve but not always be a knit.

I've been pondering what to wear at an upcoming conference in late spring, which will be in a much hotter climate than I'm used to. My vague idea is "casual professional", in that I want to look reasonably snappy without wearing a suit, which I suspect would be overkill for my profession as well as way too hot. I should note that at previous conferences of this sort, people tend to break out their "good" jeans and hiking boots and brush the dust off their sun hats. The only people who wear full-on business suits are typically graduate students giving their first public presentation.

With this in mind, I've been thinking about looking for a short-sleeved blazer-type jacket in a neutral color (black? beige? white?) that I can wear with jeans or trousers and a blouse or over a dress. Something like this, perhaps. Is this kind of jacket hopelessly frumpy?

ETA: I added some more ideas below!
