Just to add one thing on to what Rachy said about the organization of the stores. They are organized with long racks divided by item and then size, so scanning through Ross is actually very quick, much quicker for me that going into a Macy's or other department store would be (or even Target) where you have to flit like a bee from cluster of items on a round rack to another similar cluster of items on a round rack looking for a pink cardigan or whatever. Also the clearance is clearly marked and organized by size and type too.

So yes, it might take five visits to find a few items you love, but each of those visits takes about ten minutes (assuming you don't see anything interesting you want to try on) so there's that.

I have the worst Ross luck ever, and therefore they've been pushed off the "stores I frequent" list because it's like looking for gold. There is the slight off chance 1 in every 5 trips pays off for me. At that rate, I'd rather just go to TJ Maxx. You have to go to the Ross around here with nothing in mind, no hopes, no plans, and just maybe you'll find something.

I have friends that ALWAYS come out of Ross with shoe bargains and great outfits, but they just weren't anywhere to be found when I would go.

I love Ross. It's right by the pet store and I can't ever resist going in. The prices are better than Marshall's and much much better than TJ Maxx. Plus, Ross gets suits (from Macy's I think) - Marshall's and TJs are strictly jeans and casual tops. I also find hipster-modern-rustic home goods (storage baskets and canvas rugs) in my fave Nordic pattern at Ross. And nice sheet sets from time to time. Marshall's and TJs only do crisp, contemporary and graphic.

I have to confess, tho, that my Ross is *widely* acknowledged as the best in my area. In the outer 'burbs, admittedly, Ross is also rows of leggings and t-shirts.

p.s. The stores are pretty organised. It's not digging in bins, like a Filene's. But again, probably a regional thing. TJ's here is notorious for being a complete wreck, with stuff strewn on the floors.

Ross is located at my favorite vacy spot in Florida...It if definitely a cut below TJM however, I have dug through the junk and have actually found some really great buys...I would using Angie's motto..Leave no store untouched...definitely go in when they open and just dig around...Like I said, I may hit Ross 10 times and on 11, I find something great...

I avidly collect perfume and find Ross, Marshall's and TJMaxx to be frequent haunts of mine - why pay $90 for a scent if you can pay $30 or even less? ( often $10-12 even for a whole gift set)Shoes are a hard to find and fit item in our family and so that's also on the must check list. Clothes are more hit or miss for me . Mom lucks out more often. Bedding, pet toys and treats, gluten free snacks and gourmet items, scarves, hats, belts bath soaps and stuff, and sometimes the jewelry deals are jaw dropping .
I found a pair of wine color Earthies pumps size 12 for $7 plus tax. Belk still had one pair on their website for $190 plus shipping.
Also check Burlington coat factory and Tuesday Mornings if you have any nearby.
I will concur with the mixed and lower reviews of Ross . We have two nearby. The new one has nice locks in the dressing room and I've found some tan, orange and white colour blocked loafers $12.99 and a green olive and black colour blocked sheath ponte dress $3.49(needs some self tailoring I'm working on it). The older one is over near my workplace . They have more selection but their dressing rooms don't lock ( magnetic "catch" similar to a kitchen cupboard)and it weirds me out if some shopper is allowing their offspring to run around banging doors open like little hoodlums. I'll shop there and either buy and return or have Mom guard the door or try on only if it's quiet.

Thank you all for your information. It sounds like one should only go if they have time to dig through things unless looking for a specific item like bubble bath. Claire, I may be one of those who falls between juniors and regular sizes for women, at least I do at Kohls, Lands End, Macys, Pennys, and many more.

My local Ross is always clean with good customer service. However sometimes the store is really bare! Especially if you go in on a Wednesday after Senior discount day on Tuesday. ;-)

I too have found great things at Ross.
- A Vivienne Tam poncho top for $29
- An Italian wool wrap (wore it in my Clint Eastwood poncho WIW last January)
- A sturdy hardwood teak footstool which I re-covered with a needlepoint top.
- Great stacking baskets.
- Excellent Ralph Lauren 100% cotton, made in USA sheet set (was 10+ years ago).
- Exact same Jones NY easy care white shirt sold at TJ Maxx, for $5 less.
- Thick cashmere turtleneck sweater with no-name brand (also 10+ years ago).

I do like TJ Maxx as well. They especially have more designer brands, real leather shoes, and real leather bags. But I enjoy taking the stroll through Ross from time to time, based on my past successes. Yes there is a lot of low-end merchandise but I am a huge believer in "leave no retail stone unturned."

We only have a Ross in my town. I have to drive to get to a Marshall's or a TJMaxx. I feel like Ross as a chain is inferior. I have found a couple of things there over the years, but they were few and far between. There seems to be a huge size/shape gap between the juniors and the misses sizes and styles (and I fall in that crack). It might be great for someone else, though!

What crst and Mo said. I actually have a soft spot for Ross and they are one of my constant browsing stores. TJ Maxx and Marshalls do tend to have a larger selection of higher end things and usually a more up to date store (with better lighting). They also are higher priced across the board in my area.

At Ross the thing is I treat it a bit like a treasure hunt or thrifting expedition. I'm usually not looking on the regular racks (although I do a quick check of the small 'designer' rack, in case there is anything interesting.) I quickly browse clearance looking for HEWIS, and then quickly run through the shoe, belt, and bag sections. I'm looking for the one or two off items that are higher end mixed among the regular merchandise. Sometimes they have issues, so checking carefully just as I would for a thrifted item is a habit.

But a lot of what I've found there have become workhorses: J Brand boyfriend jeans for 29$, Converse in unusual colors for 24$ (right now they have a bunch of slip on sneakers for 13$), Earthies mary janes for 19$, a lazer cut black lace skirt for 5$, a BCBG poncho/sweater for 6.50$, a CK navy wrap dress for 7.50$, Fossil bags for 89-50$.

It's true that the quality of some of the stocked items on the regular racks can be poor, but it's usually pretty easy to assess that on the rack, and the price is commensurate. I have a tee that I love the unusual pattern of, but I'm not sure how many washes it will survive in total. It was 2.50$ though, so I've just been trying to baby it and so far it's doing fine.

ETA: I'm really not put off by the jumble of 'well-loved' stores. They attract a lot of shoppers, it happens. The most hard to visually parse, cluttered, and mixed up retail section I regularly visit is the shoe section of Nordstrom Rack, but that's because there lies awesome bargains, and people know it.

my $8 surplice dress in Tahoe
the oxblood Docs for $35 years back in LA? Vegas? Bay Area? it was 20 years ago, I can't recall

I like that Ross has more stock than TJ Maxx. You have to dig through it, but I don't mind. I like having shirts in one place, skirts in another, etc. I hate traditional departments of dept. stores.

The ross near me is a lot junkier now than it was a few years back. I go there once in a while as it is one of the few places I find bubble bath.love that stuff--and don't even look around the rest of the store anymore. The Marshalls near me is really nice, but there is one a few miles away that is not as nice. Mine has an awesome shoe dept. too, but I have found shoes at the one further away that looked very much like they had been worn big time out of doors and then returned, T J Maxx has gotten junkier than it used to be, and the one nearest to me seems to cater to the high school set.

My opinion of Ross has fluctuated over the years. I stopped going there for a while because things seemed lesser quality and the stores seemed run down. TJMax and Marshall's still do have a better look and showcase better brands in a way that makes you think that they are much better (think Walmart vs Target). But lately I have been really surprised and pleased with the great selection of dresses and shoes. Now I tend to go straight to Ross for dresses, and TJ Max/Marshall's for tops and bottoms. When it comes to shoes, I like to look in them all!

The stores can differ, but those who say the merch is lower-end than TJMaxx and Marshalls are right (or at least that was usually the case, but frankly I've been really unimpressed with all the cheap junk at TJM lately. :P) That said, if you're looking for something very low-priced, it can work for that type of item. You kind of have to go with an open mind, though, since what they have is hit or miss.

I'll also say that their selection has shrunk quite a lot since I first shopped there in 2010 or so, but it *could* be a location thing--there was a lot more to choose from in California. These days I go much less often than I used to because the finds are fewer. But YMMV.

I've found that Ross Dress Best for Less, TJ Maxx, and Marshall's differ quite a bit from store to store. This includes both selection and cleanliness. The big thing is not to wear sales goggles and make sure whatever you buy will go with the rest of what you have. I've noticed that what I purge most quickly are items from those stores and from thrift stores so I need to be very, very careful upon entering.

I think they stock is lower quality than TJ Maxx. Stores here are always busy, messy, long lines, and items sometimes are snagged, have huge defects, etc. Also things seem a lot more dated. I rarely find anything but the odd houseware item there. I mostly avoid going there, because it tires me.

They have a huge range of quality, with most of it not great. However you can find some really nice things occassionally if you are patient and aren't afraid to dig through the other stuff. The prices are lower than Marshall's and TJ Maxx, so that is the payoff when you find something good.

I am a huge fan of TJ Maxx and Marshall's, but Ross, not so much. The stores in the Seattle area tend to be dirty, messy and with long lines for a cashier. I think their stock is not nearly at the level of TJ's and Marshalls either. Really much lower end clothing, shoes, etc.

Also, their return policy is pretty draconian. I once bought a set of sheets labeled 100% cotton on the packaging, but found them to be a polyester blend when I got them home and unwrapped them. Ross refused to let me return them because they were "not in their original package". Go figure.

The experience I have is only with one store so I guess ymmv but I had an experience similar to Debbie's. Never found much. Had to dig. Seemed like where clothes went on a last ditch effort before who knows what. IMHO tjmaxx is way better.

I've been in the one in downtown Philadelphia several times but my experience is like FindingMyWay's. I never bought anything and don't go
there anymore.

There is one a few minutes from me but I rarely find anything and have only bought one clothing item. I like Marshall's or TJ Maxx better.

Ross is pretty much like TJMaxx. Their exact selection will vary depending on the local clientele--college students vs more people looking for work attire, for example. Ross can have good items and good deals, but you'll have to hunt for them. Usually, I find that there's a reason that items ended up at a discount retailer (weird fit, odd cut, flawed fabric, etc). Where I live, Ross is good for scarves, accessories and workout gear, and TJMaxx is better for shirts.

A Ross store just advertised that they have opened a few minutes away from me. I think I've seen the name on the Forum, but a quick search found old old threads. Those those of you who know Ross, what do you look for there? Is it like Marshalls and TJMaxx? What are the Pros and Cons?
