Ha! I like what Vix says about all cuts being a bit of a bother. A ponytail is the easiest after all.
Momo, all the haircuts you've shown are of straight hair. Perhaps finding a few pics with wavy hair would help you better visualize what your hair will look like.

Hi Momo --

Not much to add, just wanted to wish you luck for tomorrow. Remember, you can always go a little longer with this chop then go back in 4 weeks after road testing and go even shorter. I could see something mid-cheek being a great cut on you but I'm sure shorter would be fine, too.

I've loved short, I've loved long, and they've all been a bit of a bother in one way or another so just go experiment and see what happens!

I recently cut my below shoulder length hair to a layered chin length bob. I am loving it. I can wear it a lot of different ways and even though I still style it every day, it seems to be less work than my longer hair. I thInk the shorter cut would look well on you, you have a similar face shape.
Your stylist can adapt the cut you like to your type of hair. Ask about suggestions for products and set some time aside to try different ways of wearing it. With practice you will be able to style it more quickly and it won't be as much work.

I'll tell you why short hair is more work for me, just in case it's relevant. I have wavy hair that's wavy in a sort of random way. Plus my hair has an element of frizz that increases as my hair gets shorter. So the shorter my hair, the more I have to fight with perfect blowdrying, many products layered on top of each other, and the flat iron in order to combat frizz. With longer hair (and longer layers) the fight is a bit easier.

Suz is so wise. For me the thought of haircuts ever 6-8 weeks is enough to put me off getting a style that required them!!

I think you should go for it Momo!
I really want to see how it turns out.

With my hair, which is insanely thick (every stylist says it's the thickest hair they've ever encountered) and coarse at the back, and curly (almost wringlets at the back) I do a 6 minute blow dry and it looks straight and pretty good. It would look better flat ironed but I don't have time for that. My hair is a long bob with a massive amount of thinning.
I used to think it was a 15min blow dry but I timed it today. Way less time than I thought.
So if you are feeling like the cut is looking bad with your curl, you CAN tame it fairly easily.
I'm not saying it'll look bad with the curl, I'm just saying you have options, and the cut is not as risky as you think

I completely agree with Suz. The *right* cut that takes into consideration your natural hair texture, weight and density is VERY important. For example - my last short haircut was NOT low maintenance....because I don't have naturally straight hair. The cut looked fab but required work either after every single wash or I had to get hair straightening treatments that lasted 6 months.

So talk to your stylist. He will tell you the BEST cut for your hair texture and face cut. Only an expert can tell what hairstyle will be the least maintenance but 'shabby chic' on you....I sure can't tell much about your hair texture just from photos

The three look pretty similar to me? Maybe the last one is a little longer and the layers are more subtle which would make it an easier launching point if you haven't had shorter hair recently.
The length of the bangs is a decision I like to make myself but when I've had my hair done by a stylist before I usually give an outline, show maybe a photo or two, and then say "use your good judgement, and modify to what you think suits me".
MY stylist cut mine recently with a lot more layers so it's much wavier looking. I was always trying to make it smooth and as I get older it's been getting wilder. It feels like my hair has been freed, because now the style and texture are in harmony and I love it, I haven't been so happy with a cut in a long time.

It sounds like you are ready for the change. If you love your stylist then I would talk things over with him and see what he says, showing him various cuts and telling him you are a low-maintenance person.

The truth is -- as you can hear from the responses -- it really depends on your hair and the specific cut you've chosen. For me and Maneera, short hair (in the right cut for us) feels like less work; for Jeanie and others, it feels like more.

I can't really comment much on the last two cuts you showed and whether they'd be less work than the first. Just because something looks a little loose and "messy" doesn't mean it would be easy to take care of. It can take a lot of work for those "messy" cuts to look messy in just the right way, LOL. At least that is my experience. But again, your mileage may vary -- it all depends on your specific wave, hair texture, and tolerance.

Also, just keep in mind that what feels "fussy" to one person feels "low maintenance" to another. Take frequent haircuts, for example. To me, that doesn't feel like a problem at all. Why? Because I get 6 weeks of wash-n-wear in between the cuts...but possibly also because I have a flexible schedule, live in a town where I can walk to the salon, etc. To Jeanie, frequent cuts feel like a hassle. Why? Well, maybe her schedule is more packed or less flexible than mine, or her stylist may be less available, and maybe she doesn't get wash-n-wear in between cuts. So compared to her longer hair, it feels like a lot to invest. And there's no denying frequent cuts entail more expense, so factor that in, also.

Courses for horses, as Angie might say.

Good luck with this! It's fun to go for a big transformation!

Thank you so much everyone for your input! I am blown away by how generous you all are with sharing your experience.
It is really helpful.
I tend to be one who gloss over details so this has given me a ton to think about.
I do very much trust my stylist. He loves my hair and always comes up with great looks.
Truth is I hate spending time on my hair but with it long even washing and drying it is a task.
That said.. I expect this to be a short ( hee hee) term haircut as I will most likely go back to a longer style.
For some reason I feel like I NEEd to do this.
Lots of personal transformation this last year and this feels like a part of the process for me. Like throwing away a security blanket if that makes sense!

As someone who went from long to short (and does this regularly), you DO NOT always need a lot of time for styling.

That said, you need to go to a stylist who will understand your hair, it's natural texture & weight, and will pay attention when you say you want a low-maintenance haircut. My hair takes no time to style at all. I take a dollop of hair serum (or Argan oil), apply all over hair and scrunch for my hair to curl in the direction I want. That's it. Then my hair air-dries and i can forget about it.

Yes, my haircut is such that it'll need trimming every 4-6 weeks if I want to keep the length. But the stylist made sure that even if my hair is longer (and I don't get to her until 8 weeks later), the cut still looks good in longer length.

#1 - day of cut
#2 - in between
#3 - even longer

I think you should go for that cut!

Just chiming in to add what I have learned over the years. I have tried short cuts and it was a fun change but didn't work for me because I am very low maintenance with my hair. Short cuts have to be maintained and to look good you have to get hair cuts ever 4-6 weeks. I don't make it to the salon that often so that's the first strike. Secondly, I love to be able to pull my hair into a ponytail. And I like a wash and go style and a lot of short cuts seem to require a lot of styling. But mostly I just didn't like short hair on me. If you are up for the maintenance and won't miss you ponytail, I say go for it because it will grow back and then you will know if you can do short or not. So many are just in love with short styles. It is worth finding out.

Looking at #2 which I think is the same cuts as 1?? It looks to me like a short bob??? If that's the case while it's lovely I do think it will be high maintenance. I have naturally wavy hair which I prefer straight. Like Suz my hair needs to be thinned out and the actual cut determines the overall success. Currently my hair is pretty easy to style. Wash and blow wave each morning and slide the straighteners thru...but I cannot simply wash and wear due to the natural wave/curl. I would have a good chat with your stylist and get her input. You have a very pretty face and I think you could carry off a shirt do no problem xx

I like the cut and think it would look good on you (not frumpy as you fear).

One question: the style seems like the front bits may be on your face (currently you pull it back a lot)? The cut may not be that different than your "6" photo other than the length (or should I say: the bangs might be like your bangs in "6"). I do notice that on the model, the hair falls a bit in her eyes except in the "wind is blowing it back" shot. I don't mind that look (or feel)--would you? If that is OK, I say go for it.

Okay, I'm jumping back in, because my hair has a similar texture. Thick, heavy, a bit of a wave (but blunt cut the weight pulls the wave out). And hands down shorter hair is my preferred option, not only because it happens to suit me (yay, lucky break!) but also because it is about 300% easier for me to style.

When my hair was longer (about shoulder length) I was always desperate to pull it back in a pony tail. It was just too hot otherwise. And I could never wear a twist or chignon or anything similar because it wouldn't stay (too heavy, even with layers cut in). Hot does not even begin to describe it, and headache is what I got if I did manage to get it "up" in a bun, from the 47 hairpins this took, even done by a good stylist.

Meanwhile, I basically do not understand what people mean when they say that short hair takes a lot of styling work. Mine has never been difficult to style when it was short, and I've had a lot of different cuts, from the Dorothy Hamill wedge-style cuts to the ultra-short pixie I'm wearing today. It is important to get a superb cut and my hair does need thinning. With every cut. I need to use a bit of product (generally to create piecy bangs); with some cuts I need to run a flat iron through it. But honestly -- with short hair it's mostly air dry and go for me, whereas with longer hair it is interminable blow drying (esp. in winter), some kind of product to keep it in line, and even then, the hair never looking right.

Admittedly, the style you've chosen is a bit closer to what I might call "medium short" and in my experience this length can be the trickiest. You may find that the front is always flying in your face, which would be a major pain for someone like me. And you might need to blow dry to get the volume in the right place...again, not sure. But in general, for hair of this texture, if cut properly I think shorter can for sure be easier.

Di d you see Astrid's comments on this thread:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....air-modern

I definitely think taking your hair shorter in stages is a good thing, but I also agree with Astrid that for curly thick hair, it might look better to just go for a short pixie.

PS: I love your hair off your face in a pony tail. You have a lovely forehead/hairline.

Thank you. Yeah. I am not sure about th styling time factor. I keep imagining it is easier .. I guess not?

My hair is thick and heavy. I find it so hot all the time. More so as my hormones seem to have shifted so that I run super hot often!

M Y hair is a bit wavy but with the weight it pulls straight quickly ... My one and only perm in the early 90s fell out the next day!

My hair a,so grows super quickly so I won't be stuck with it for long.

I think this style would be beautiful on you. But I agree with Angie about the styling time that will be involved. With the shorter length you won't be able to pull it up if you aren't having a "good hair" day.

I will be firm about your expectations, Momo. You have to be committed to styling this type of cut/length daily. Otherwise it will not look fab.

You have a very pretty face and radiant smile - OF COURSE you can pull off the look. You need to factor in styling time - that's all.

Yes, it should work on you! I think your hair looks like it is pretty thick and with a slight wave -- that kind of cut should be fine. But ask the hairdresser, of course!

It's very nice and would suit you but I agree that you need to check that it works without too much fuss for your hair type. Does your hair get curly when you cut it? If so the style that you showed may require more maintenance unless you are OK with that of course.
