I got a couple of button up Gap BF shirts last year, an orange one with tea cups (hard to tell what it is until you are up close) and a white one with green bicycles (which I wear purely for fun with a selective audience - my work involves a lot of work with cyclists, so it's been to some meetings, workshops). But in general, they are not me.

I love them, but my style is definitely not minimalistic. I have a few tops, with small prints (thumbnail sized). I wear them with jeans or knee length skirts, try to avoid styling them too cutesy.

More seriously--I do wear prints, but more "serious" ones. Agree that novelty print could be fun for a bag, etc.

I do like classic prints -- especially stripes -- but I have always kept novelty prints for pajamas until this top came along last year. It is a cat print, but the cats are really beside the point for me, which is maybe why it worked. It's a gorgeous shade of blue and really graphic -- Suz got it, and then I had to copy(cat) her. It's my only novelty print item, I think, and I love to wear it. (I think this is the one Janet is talking about above.)

I should add that I was really tempted by an Equipment silk blouse with a strawberry print this spring, I'm not sure why. Sometimes they are just fun.

I like them, but generally only wear those that have special appeal to me. In my case, that's usually cats or fish Small doses works well for a more sophisticated take, but larger doses are fun and can certainly work. If you're concerned about looking too young, then little bits paired with something more classic should work just fine. If you love them I think they're perfectly doable, and no need to relegate to pillows if you'd rather be wearing them.

I'm with IK. Small doses. I'm really choosy about them, and in fact rarely wear them anymore. For me, I've never been a fan of anything cutesy (no hearts, no bows, ever), but I do like a graphic novelty print like the bird one you've shown.

I like them on other women in small doses for casual wear. I would steer away from anything that can be interpreted as "cute" for professional wear. However, let me add the caveat that a lot of factors go into what makes a print either work or skew too twee, to my eye. Color scheme goes a long way. I'm thinking of that cat print shirt that a couple of ladies here on the forum have -- I love it. It looks like a geometric print from a distance and only becomes obvious as cats as you look closer, and it's in a lovely blue and white color palette, so it maintains a certain sophistication.

I wore novelty prints - I'm talking like bugs and dinosaurs - until well into my 40s. Then at one point I decided that I needed to grow the the hell up, and stop looking like a playpen. But I miss their cheefulness, to be honest. I still have some that I wear around the house, but most of them have been purged.

I'm often mistaken for younger than my age (28 this past April but still get suspiciously carded when I try to buy alcohol, even by bartenders who don't card my 26 year old sister) too, but luckily it doesn't matter much in my daily life. For some reason, probably because I can't afford to shop at Anthropologie (lol), I've never felt hugely drawn to wearing novelty prints (unlike traditional prints like polka dots, stripes, floral, & plaid, which are all well represented in my closet), but I do have a little brooch collection that is kind of my novelty print substitute! I tried wearing them after reading about Madeline Albright's brooches in her memoir Madame Secretary and found I really enjoyed it. They add some extra whimsy & personality to my outfits & are easy to buy secondhand or from independent craftsmen. Maybe that could work for you too?

I love novelty prints on other people: they make me smile. Could you try adding one in your casual wear, where your age isn't as important? I know you have a small closet though, so would you get tired of wearing the same print frequently (vs a solid)? I love the bags you've shown & since you wear mainly solids, it'd be easy to coordinate.

I think they can look terrific, esp. when combined with the right personality to carry them off - they can be cute or modern, and add interest to an outfit.

I think they fall into the wildcard category for me. I bought this Equipment top a few weeks ago - talk about a novelty print - and I'm twice your age. At first I was a little worried about looking like i was trying too hard to be hip and young, but I think if you style a novelty in a current yet not-too oott way, it can really work. This Equipment top of mine has become surprisingly a favourite! (I don't collect heart motif things either so...) I wear it with rolled up distressed BFs and metallic cage sandals.

There's nothing wrong with a novelty print clothing item if it suits your personality, but there are lots of ways to have fun with them if you choose not to wear them...coffee mugs, pajamas, beach totes, beach/pool towels, throws, bath mats and towels, wallet, etc.

For PJs, they'd be ok. Otherwise, I'm not into prints and the few I'm willing to consider are the fairly classic polka dots, stripes, and houndstooth.

While working through the Wardrobe Architect series (http://www.coletterie.com/wardrobe-architect/) I came to realize that I have a soft spot for novelty prints, as seen almost half way down in this post:
http://www.coletterie.com/ward.....and-prints.

Through college I had several different items that I loved with different novelty prints, mostly involving birds. I still have a pair of pj bottoms with a tree print on them, but for the most part I've avoided novelty prints because I don't think that they fit with the rest of my simpler aesthetic, and because I'm afraid they make me seem younger (I'm 27 but strangers often guess I'm closer to 20). Maybe I can find other ways to have them in my life without wearing them - perhaps shopping bags and pillows?

What do you think about novelty prints? Do you wear them? Do you use them in other ways?
