I'm a big fan of fine wale corduroy. I find "frump factor" comes more from cut/style of pant, skirt or jacket than material in this case. I have several pairs of fine wale corduroy skinnies (yesterday's Rainy Day WIW deep red skinnies are actually fine wale corduroy from Blank NYC and they hold their shape really well (they are made like second skins). I have them in deep eggplant as well).

I also have a couple of straight/boot cuts and a deep red blazer in fine wale corduroy. I like the RATE aspect of corduroy and find that, depending on what I style those pieces with, they're are very versatile.

Wide wale corduroy is a different story, imho. I find it looks dated to my eye. However, I wouldn't rule it out depending on the item and it's cut/style (but not for pants --for me, anyway, that's too 70's).

Love fine waled corduroy slim fit jean pants. Have several current pairs from Jigsaw, AG and Ralph Lauren. Warm, coloured and soft in winter they always have a place in my winter wardrobe. Not at all sure about skirts and jackets in corduroy though.....I prefer different fabrics for these items. One tip for you.....wash and iron them inside out to keep them looking good.

I love cords. I have three pair of exact duplicate fine whale black straight leg cords. They are part of my arena capsule so basically gear. These cords are super warm and do not bag out or stretch. They also kept their colour perfectly for years. I find the fabric much softer and comfortable than jeans which I do not wear. The best thing about these pants is the warmth factor, the comfort and styling. They don't have any back pockets and the front jean like style has two very small zippered pockets at the top just under the waistband. Perfect for stowing an insulin pump and tickets/money at the hockey game where I go purse less.
Unfortunately they have lost their pristine quality so are cleaning house clothes now and will soon be donated. I would buy them again (skinnier leg though) if I could find them...

I also love my corduroy pants. I have five pairs of very fine wale pants - 2 boot cuts and 3 straight-legged jeans. I wear them in regular rotation with heeled booties, usually in matching colors, to work and feel very cozy. I do not find them frumpy at all.

I like my corduroy fine wale skinny pants. I like that I could get them in 'vintage' colors, I like that they look weathered and velvety, and just keep looking more weathered and velvety as they get older. When I wear them I'm not aiming to look sharp, but rustic/*cough*hipster/vintage so they get paired with worn leather or suede.

But then, elements of Bilbo Baggins's look really appeal to me in casual wear, so it may be highly personalized taste.

To my eye, it just depends on the garment. I generally love corduroy that looks like velvet, but I do find wear issues, and sagging issues with a lot of stretch corduroy trousers. The old corduroy -- with far less stretch --- held up better.

I'm not a fan of corduroy, but I hate it less than I used to. I think that if you have a nice, updated style, especially in a blazer, and the color is nice, and the waling is very fine (almost like lined velvet), then it works.

Now that I think about it, I not long ago donated to Goodwill a dress that was a very lightweight corduroy. I hadn't even realized that it was corduroy until now! The waling was extremely fine. But I just didn't like something about the dress and didn't enjoy wearing it. Maybe it was the fabric and I really do hate corduroy deep down!

I love my rust red corduroy skinnies, so soft and comfy! The wale is high so maybe it's kinda hard to tell they're corduroy from far away. I don't think I'd wear corduroy any other way though; maybe as a skirt.

Oh boy, I remember those whale prints. I also remember one of the first times I posted here on YLF it was to disagree with Angie who believed that cords were more casual than denim. Heh. I think I still disagree, honestly, though i suppose it could depend on the denim styling.

I still own and wear cord pants in the winter. I think I own a cord blazer, too, but in a narrow wale. They look cold weather to me, and have a nice texture, not to mention they're usually warmer than twill or plain cotton. There's a reason they invented corduroy, after all.

'Course, I have a bad case of preppy and as far as I'm concerned, the wider the wale the better. In fact, the very best is wearing wide-wale corduroy with a whale print turtle-neck and whale-print rain jacket...

I love corduroy. Like the wabi sabi effect. :D I have a couple of Orvis fine wale corduroy walking coats, very well-made and structured, lined with quilted polyfill. The sleeves will wrinkle some but no worse than some wool coats.
Otherwise, they look great. OTOH, I won't wear pre-whiskered jeans and slashed, ripped, fraying jeans, so go figure. #1 is the beige but looks wonderful punched up with winter accessories. #2 is a silvery pale greenish blue. #3 is a man's suit with cognac accessories I'm very taken with. Hope to at least end up with the accessories.

I bought a pair of cord bootcuts during the summer because over the last few years, one of my favorite pairs of pants was cord bootcut. This time, I never wore them! Then I chopped them into skinnies and now wear them all the time. I also ended up picking up a pair of dark red cords that I'd tried on and left behind several times over the course of a couple of months.

Apparently, I'm a fan of skinny cords. Though my interest is waning. I might not wear corduroy next winter.

For myself I can say that I didn't get a new corduroy item and the one pair of corduroy skinnies I have is almost worn out. I'm debating whether I should add them to the purge pile at the moment. That said, I could see myself go for a corduroy blazer/jacket, even though I don't think I will buy corduroy pants again in the near future.

I see that this is an old thread brought back to life, but I'll add my thoughts. I like corduroy. I have a burnt orange corduroy pencil skirt that I adore and a cord blazer that's a real workhorse. I don't wear the pants, only because I haven't found a pair in a color and cut that I like. I do dress my toddler in corduroy, but not my older children. I've never seen Mr. Jewell in corduroy. The idea that it's more casual than denim is not a universal opinion. I could wear corduroy to work five days a week and it would be perfectly acceptable, however jeans would not. I've never heard of an office or school dress code that named corduroy among the clothing items "not allowed."

I still find that corduroy doesn't keep it's color or stay looking pristine very long. As much as I love texture, cords just look too casual even for my casual lifestyle. For warmth I just wear Cuddle Duds or winter silk under regular jeans and pants.

I was at a meeting this week and a young woman wore a slightly oversized chestnut corduroy blazer with the sleeves scrunched, two layered infinity scarves (one patterned, one not), and skinny jeans, and she looked AMAZING. Like so many things, it's all in the styling.

Corduroy pants in a good fabric, nice color, a great fit and well styled can look great for work, particularly on very cold and/ or snowy days. After you shovel yourself out of your driveway you wear a good pair of cords matched with a nice top and jacket under your Winter coat and you will be fine at work. Maybe if I lived in a warmer climate I would not wear them as much, but where Iive the warmth and nice look of good cords are very useful and not frumpy.

I have about 10 or so pairs of JC bootcut cords in various colors that I wear in winter when it is cold. I like the bootcut as it is easier to wear a warmer shoe than the skinny cords that JC has.

I have a pair of black corduroy pants, boot cut jean style, and they look like velvet, rich, textured.... I don't wear them much, and I know they may not last as long as other fabrics, but that's okay. They don't seem to bag out. I wear a lot of black bottoms, so I love to have the variety in texture. I also have a red pair of skinnies. And two skirts, black and navy. I totally don't understand the argument that they are more casual than denim.

Now that this thread has been revived, I'm interested in hearing whether Angie's checklist has changed at all since two years ago?

My own feeling is that corduroy is cozy, warm, delightful to the touch, and often painfully unflattering. That's why I'm going for it in leggings, which will only peek out under something else.

Hey Angie -- try on a pair of the cord slim fit ankle length pants at Talbots. I was cord-averse until I tried them this weekend. I now own a great pair in "vixen" (I suppose that is a fox-inspired russet). And I'm tempted by the cord blazer they have there, too. Waiting on another sale to decide.
And I promise not to wear the jacket and pants together!
